Summary: My Experience At Habitat For Humanity In Silver Spring

The Columbia Housing Authority (CHA), established in 1934, is the third oldest housing authorities in the United States and the largest housing authority in the state of South Carolina. The organization assists thousands of low-income families and individuals in the Richland and some parts of Lexington County.

Volunteers of America is not only a nonprofit community organization but also a ministry of service that is committed to helping people in need to rebuild their lives and reach their total potential. The organization is effective in helping people in need to rebuild their lives through its huge workforce that consist of approximately 16,000 paid professional employees. Moreover, the organization also accomplishes its mission through various human service programs such as housing and healthcare. Throughout its history, Volunteers of America has continued to support and empower the most vulnerable groups in America including at-risk youth, homeless individuals and families, veterans, people returning from prisons, and individuals recovering from addictions. Generally, through integrating deep compassion with the highly efficient programs and services, the organization's work touches the heart, body, mind, and spirit of the people it serves.

My community service project encompassed the issue of concern with housing inequality due to economic disparities. Many people in today’s society are unable to provide adequate and healthy housing for their families. According to the CDC Health Disparities and Inequalities Report of 2011, these disparities decreased across racial, ethnic, income, and education-level categories, indicating that the majority of the people living in such conditions were subjected to a minority1. Non-hispanic blacks, followed by Hispanics and American Indians/Alaska Natives, had the highest percentage of householders living in inadequate housing1. Habitat was started in 1976 by Evangelical Christians as a non-profit organization that built affordable houses for families in need (Baggett, 2000). Habitat offers a sweat equity program that requires the homeowner to dedicate 300 hours of labor in building their home and other habitat homes (Habitat, 2016). When I was back home I heard about this organization one time and it caught my attention, but I never got the chance to go get information. Some more advertising would be helpful, so more people can know about this organization and help in any way possible. It is heartwarming to see that there are people like you willing to build homes for people who are less fortunate. Since volunteering I have meet some admirable, nurturing, and complexed group of people who have devoted their careers to helping families in crucial situations. These group of inspiring people have influenced me in so many ways- especially everyone at the Juvenile Detention Center. When I look around in a room at a meeting for a case, I am absolutely amazed by the number of people that really want to actually help these children get back home or find a safe place to live and improve every aspect of that child’s family life. And we did even know these people but we are all here for the same coming good no one is against

In the 2012 Presidential race, Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum defeated former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in the statewide Republican caucuses. Romney was declared the winner by 8 votes on caucus night. Every vote counts and by ignoring to vote, you are neglecting what previous generations have fought for the rights to do. Equally important, is protecting this beautiful country by enrolling for the army and fighting for it. The millions of Americans who have sacrificed their lives did it for a reason, and it was so other Americans could live peacefully. In addition, I believe volunteering should be a responsibility for all. Without nonprofit volunteering organizations, my family would have had an even harder time adjusting to the new country. With the help of them, they offered a temporary shelter and necessities, such as clothing and food, for my family. It’s an important task to encourage and inform adolescents to volunteer, as a result we can create confident young adults who have seen the worse and are willing to keep America great. As a 4-H officer, student Council representative, National Honor Society president, student-athlete, representative of my electric provider, and an American citizen, I proudly gleam the responsibility of showing citizenship. Although choosing to live in a shell and not help anyone else would be grandly easier, I chose to be outgoing, helping others that would certainly lend their help to me. Through the opportunities presented to me and to the paths I have chosen, I display an array of citizenship towards my country and to the small, proud community of Shinglehouse.

Weekends are usually spent cooling down and waiting for the next school week. F I spend my saturdays and sundays usually watching football with my family. With the interest of breaking my norms, I knew I could use weekends to help others in need. While relaxing is great , but trying new things may give me the opportunity to meet new people and experiencing something new. So I decided one weekend to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in the program, “ A Brush for Kindness.” Our job was to paint a house for a elderly woman who was unable to afford to paint her house.

Without community service, I feel, there would be no real indication of any type of community that is willing to come together when help is needed. Over the past four years of my high school experience, I have engaged in 30+ hours of community service. These hours have been collected anywhere from small tasks such as helping teachers grade homework, to helping someone move into their new home. For this paper, I will be elaborating on my service for the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge which I completed during my 11th grade year, project term.

Within minutes of starting my first day, I realized why the question was asked and the importance of such question: every volunteer was a convict fulfilling court order community service. I was shocked, almost appalled, to have been thrown into such a crowd, but I told myself that I would endure for at least a day before deciding to never return. By the end of the day, I knew all of them on a first name basis. Instead of the cold blooded criminals portrayed in entertainment today, they were actually regular people that understood their mistakes and worked to fix them. Trapped inside a food pantry all day and shunned by the community for being an offender, they sought a friendship with me and I was ecstatic that I could be a “normal” friend to those who didn’t have any. When the summer had ended, they were sad to see me return to school, but I know that our time together was constructive; I gained a new perspective on life and they gained hope that not everyone would judge them for being a convict.

Every day we the community played a part in each other’s life. When I look back on it I had so much inspiration around me, influencing my constant desire to pleasure those in need. Detroit has taught me to endlessly love, but over these vast years I’ve come to the conclusion to do my part. I had the chance to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in Kalamazoo, MI during October and the beginning of November.

In America there is over 600,000 people that are homeless. Shelters don’t always have open availability for new people to come. A question most people have is, where will they stay? Habitat for Humanity is here to help. Habitat helps families that are without a home, to be able to have a home.
