The United States went into what was called the American Revolution in 1765. The British had recently lost a war at Lexington and Concord, and also lost a lot of their money. The British ended up taxing the Americans to make up their dues. The Americans did not like this too much, so angered Americans fought with the British, leading to the American Revolution. The British put the stamp act on the Americans in 1765. This was the law that states that all legal documents had to have a legal stamp on them to be valid. In Patrick Henry’s speech, he states that the colonists had no representatives in the British Parliament (Doc. 1). This idea spread all throughout America, and angered all colonists. The sugar act was passed in 1764, and made the value of the imports go down, then curve back up. The colonists had to pay for sugar. In 1770, the colonists repealed the Townshend Acts, which made the value of imports skyrocket. In 1774, the Intolerable Acts were passed, which made the value of imports drop majorly. (Doc. 2) The Stamp Act of 1765 required people to pay taxes for a stamp on court documents, publications, and land. Britain passed this law because they had recently lost all of their money in the French and Indian War. American colonists organized boycotts and protests against this tax to get it repealed, and it took a little bit of time, but eventually the British repealed the tax in 1766. (Doc. 3) The Tea tax was put on Americans in 1773, which required Americans to pay a tax on all tea goods. The Americans thought this was unfair, as they had no representation, and were being forced to pay for goods. As a result to protest against this tax, colonists called the Sons of Liberty organized the Boston Tea Party. This organization took place in 1773, where the Sons of Liberty dressed in feathers and tar, and dumped all of the tea into the Boston
