Stage One Music expanded the knowledge and understanding of music theory to a further extent. As part of the subject, the opportunities and obstacles of the music industry was investigated, while each individual continued to experiment with discovering their own ‘music style’. Throughout the year, students progressed their abilities of their chosen instruments by performing a music arrangement as a soloist and as part of an ensemble. A highlight of the subject was participating in the Performing Arts Showcase since students were able to present the skills which they have worked on for the duration of the
The graded unit is a piece of work that will showcase my skills that I have attained whilst studying the HND course and it will present my knowledge of the music business to the best of my ability. With this piece of work, it should open a lot of doors as a future employee to the music industry.
I chose the genre string quartet and attended a concert at First Presbyterian church on October 19th, 2014. Because of its location the sanctuary where the concert took place had many stained glass windows. It was marvelous and in my opinion well suited the feel of classical music. The audience was very responsive and attentive. They applauded when the musicians appeared, in between pieces, and at the very end. They were quick to join in the sing along portion of the concert. Overall the people attending were an older crowd but you could tell they truly appreciated the music. The concert’s duration was around an
The audition requires young musicians to prepare a solo piece, scales, orchestral excerpts, and to sight read a piece of music at the time of the audition. After auditioning, it will be determined by the conductor of the specific group whether or not one’s skill level meets the level of the group. The Memphis Youth Symphony offers a myriad of opportunities throughout the season for young musicians to connect and highlight their talent as a whole. There are four annual concerts along with several other events that allow students to acclimate into the community, while also enjoying a valuable learning experience. The Memphis Youth Symphony is a large discourse community with over 200 students from schools all across the tri-state area—I set out to conduct pertinent research to efficiently support my analysis of The Memphis Youth Symphony discourse community.
Over the past weeks I have been adding sounds to a moving image clip. Research of the science behind sound and of professional sound recordist would be key, anything from microphone techniques to personal safety would need to be taken into account on the recording side, whereas an understanding of the software and tools within it would be needed for the sequencing.
Imagine a third grader, small and blonde, standing on a stage that practically swallows her. She gazes in awe at the bright lights that seem to tower miles above her head; likewise, she follows with a stare, fixating on the hundreds of darkened faces that remain directly in front of her. Unlike her classmates who fidget with nerves beside her, she feels a rush of adrenaline. What may have seemed to some an ordinary choir concert in a dull auditorium, was, to me, a life changing moment. Ever since this day, for 9 years now, I have had an unwavering passion for music and performing. As I aged, I found myself excitedly learning how to play 7 new instruments, but even considering the vast number of bands, orchestras, choirs, and instrumental lessons that I joined, I noticed myself
On Friday, July 10th, I chose virtually to attend an online YouTube Symphony Orchestra Concert-2011. Many beautiful pieces were performed by a magnificent orchestra that included more than sixty participants and consisted of instruments such as: flutes, oboes, horn, clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, percussions and strings. Concert’s selections varied in length, temperament, mood and dynamics. Orchestra Symphony gave an overpowering, extraordinary presentation and delivery.
Our final Composition I essay was a fun way to end the course. I compared it to an ice cream sundae, as this dessert is a fun way to end a great meal. With every delicious sundae, it needs to have an equal amount of toppings; likewise, the process analysis essay needed an equal amount of work from each member.
One way I became more involved in university life by going to Oklahoma!. Not the state, but rather the musical put on by the university. My suitemate Anna auditioned to be a part of it, and when she got the part, she invited us all to watch opening night on November 13th.
The wonderful concert that I attended was Susannah. Susannah was an opera created by Carlisle Floyd and presented by the University of Northern Iowa’s Opera. Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour directed the performance. This concert performed January 25, 2016 in the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in the concert hall at 7:30 p.m. The orchestra that is used was the symphony orchestra that was placed before the stage blocked by black curtains. Dr. Rebecca Burkhardt directed the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra.
On the evening of October 18th, 2015 I attended the live Jazz music performance of Nilson Matta’s “Brazilian Voyage”. The performance was held at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, located in the Jazz Lincoln Center, in New York City. Nilson Matta is a Brazilian bassist, composer, and producer. Matta is considered to be one of the greatest bass musicians in the world, and has earned great reputation for his unique sounds (Nilson). The staff members were very welcoming, and were all dressed in black attire. The venue had dim lighting, and each table had a lighted candle; which created a nice romantic and intimate atmosphere. Behind the stage, there is a spectacular scene that overlooks Central Park, and the city.
Assessment and grading of students are two of the most controversial and debated topics within music education. Where as in most classes this will be a simple and straightforward process of checking the student’s work to the answer key, or assessing their progress through their test scores, music educators, especially in elementary music education, sometimes struggle with these two essential elements of any classroom. The obstacles that make this process difficult include: limited time, a great volume of students, and restrictive ambiguous grading criteria on the part of the school district as a whole. Many music teachers debate
With more tourist taking huge interest in cultural and indigenous/ aboriginal tourism, many places are trying to stage authenticity. Staged authenticity is when a host community take something such as a person, place or thing and recreate it into something that can reflect the traditional values and customs of the locals. In a simpler term, it means the staging of local culture to create the impression of authenticity for a tourist
For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the composers and/or performers. I went with three friends, who I convinced by telling it would be interesting to see
This semester I have experience many live musical performances. Some of these performances have let me down but for the most part, these performances have been everything I ever expected. My two favorite performances this semester were Festival Vallenato and Ultra Music Festival. Although these two types of music are different in every way possible, the people and the performers are exactly where I feel I am in the right place.
On Thursday April 25, 2013 , I attended a jazz vocal concert at the Music Concert Hall. The first vocal ensemble opened up the performance with a slow rhythmic song called Blue Skies. It began with vocals and I noticed a light auxiliary percussion and drum rhythm. Also, the bass guitarist used walking bass and the piano and electric guitar joined in as well. The first song also consisted of two soloist Regina and Chantel who took the front stage to show off their chops. After the solo performances they fell back into the vocal sections and finished off the song as a complete band. The second performance had a piano opening which led to vocals joining in at the same time as the rhythm section. This performance
