Concert Report One: Marion Anderson String Quartet Concert I chose the genre string quartet and attended a concert at First Presbyterian church on October 19th, 2014. Because of its location the sanctuary where the concert took place had many stained glass windows. It was marvelous and in my opinion well suited the feel of classical music. The audience was very responsive and attentive. They applauded when the musicians appeared, in between pieces, and at the very end. They were quick to join in the sing along portion of the concert. Overall the people attending were an older crowd but you could tell they truly appreciated the music. The concert’s duration was around an

Both were based on slavery and I would assume the purpose was to remember events passed as well as enjoy the rich culture and tradition of African Americans. My initial response to the entire production was surprise. After hearing that it was based on slavery I was a little confused that many parts of both pieces were lively and bright. I enjoyed the second piece more than the first. I felt without the narration I could better focus on mood changes and dynamics of the music. Before even reading the pamphlet, after listening to Delius’s piece I could easily tell it had a very deep mournful and somber undertone. After reading the pamphlet I realized the sadness was due to the loss of the love of his life. I feel that a lot of music classical or not is biased by the writers love life. This is shown all throughout the Romantic period and I feel set a precedent for other music to come for example 20th century music. The first piece didn’t grab me as quickly as the second. I think I enjoyed the unexpected aspects of the String Quartet but also I felt this one was so much easier to get lost in. But as I said before since I am new to this kind of concert experience I feel my assessment would be much less detailed and accurate than that of someone who is educated in music and familiar with concerts such as these. Since I liked the second piece more than the first I plan to discuss the second more in detail. The first piece Follow the Drinking Gourd
Before the concert began, the atmosphere felt causal and comforting. The non-ticketed nature of the concert seemed to create a diversity within the audience. There appeared to no unreasonable dress code policy and the ages of the audience ranged from infants to elderly adults. Something I took note of was that the instruments that made up the ensemble were all wind instruments, except for the string bassist and pianist. I had never attended a performance primarily consisting of wind instruments, so I was curious to hear whether the themes of the pieces were going to be betrayed similarly to string instruments.
I have never attended an orchestral concert. Although my taste ranges between several different types of music, the only concerts I have attended are of the rock and country variety. I was not sure what to expect in attending The Houston Civic Symphony’s performance on Sunday, October 9, 2016. It was held at the Dunham Theater within the Morris Cultural Arts Center at Houston Baptist University. Once inside I saw the beautiful stage with all of the performers warming up and three stories of seating. Many of the patrons were in the age range of 30 and up. I did see some kids and young adults but not many. The HCS marked its 50th year since the very first performance this season. The first performance happened in 1996 when a group of music lovers in Houston came together to play a concert just because they wanted to play and share their love of music with others. From that day they became known as the Houston Civic Symphony. Some of the players I watched in this performance have been with the Symphony for 25 years or more while others are barely reaching their first year if not their first performance; only two of the players have been there since the very first season. Out of the three pieces performed the one that caught my attention the most was the last, it hold a powerful message of fear and desperation for
I thoroughly enjoyed this concert from beginning to end. The opening piece, “String Quartet in F Major, K 590”, was both soothing and
On Friday, July 10th, I chose virtually to attend an online YouTube Symphony Orchestra Concert-2011. Many beautiful pieces were performed by a magnificent orchestra that included more than sixty participants and consisted of instruments such as: flutes, oboes, horn, clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, percussions and strings. Concert’s selections varied in length, temperament, mood and dynamics. Orchestra Symphony gave an overpowering, extraordinary presentation and delivery.
The concert that I attended seemed to focus primarily on the romantic period of music. Though it may have gone into a different genre at some point it wasn’t that noticeable to me. The first work performed for the audience was done so with a violin, a piano, and a woman singing. It seemed to me that this was one work with a very slow, somber tone. The woman piano and the violin worked extremely well together to compliment the woman’s singing voice. While this one I think was the shortest movement as well as the calmest in tone, I don’t think that necessarily equates to anything
The third piece that was played was “Pange Lingua.” This song reminds me of when I am in church. Everyone sings loud and there is no one person that sings first and is followed. There is a lot of confusion in this song because everyone is singing something different and they are all very loud. I did not like this piece for that reason. I don’t know if that is how it’s supposed to be played, but I think it would have sounded better if only some people sang loud and other people sang soft so the attention could be focused on the people
I enjoyed this concert. Not only it’s my first time went to a classical music concert, but also the music of this concert that the musicians played were very well. When the movement was change my mood was different. I think it’s totally different feel if you attending a live concert or just watch at home. The atmosphere I was realy enjoyed in that time at the
The music played throughout all of the concerts adhered to be diverse. The instruments, the individuals performing, and the conductor all proved to be outstanding. The concerts proved to be interesting as I witnessed them, first hand.
First and foremost, I would like to thank Mrs. Keech for all that she does to make sure that we are prepared for the concert as always, but also to thank her for this opportunity for me to step out for a minute or two to say a few words.
I attended a piano four hands concert performed by artists, Sangmi Lim and Dino Mulic. The pair preformed a program consisting of four pieces, Sonata in D Major, K.381. by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Fantasy in F Minor, D. 940 (op. 103) by Franz Schubert, Three Pieces (Elegy, Song, Poco rumbato) by Vladimir Denader, and History of the Tango by Astor Piazzolla.
It was tenth grade and marching season had just ended, marking the beginning of concert band. I was looking forward to putting down my tiny piccolo and picking up its big sister- the flute. But as I was getting ready to take the school flute home for Christmas break, I overheard our only two trombone players inform our director that one of them will not be playing in the concert band, and the other one will be switching to berry saxophone. Which means we will not have a trombone section. So I took the initiative and told him that I will learn the instrument and play it since we will have a flute section. Mr.Bradford said okay, and I went home.
My favorite extracurricular activity in high school has been band. I love playing percussion and I am very excited to become a music teacher. In every year of highschool, I have auditioned for All-State Band. The audition process taught me many valuable lessons, but I think the most important has been defeat. After my auditions my freshman and sophomore year, I was very discouraged because I did not make it into All-State Band. However, after my sophomore year I was able to evaluate my practicing and learn from my mistakes. I channeled my anger from defeat into motivation to practice harder than I had ever done before. I remember coming home after long days at school, trying to fit in homework and sometimes an evening violin lesson or play
The concert I attended was performed by the Brooklyn College Wind Ensemble conducted by Jeff W. Ball on March 1, 2016. The Midwood High School Band, conducted by Melissa Williams, performed as special guests. Before going to the concert, I looked up Wind Ensemble so I’d know what to expect. A Wind Ensemble consists only of wind, brass, and percussion instruments. My concert experience was enjoyable as I went in knowing what the Wind Ensemble is, and went in with an open mind.
October 7, 2016 was the day of the Carrie Underwood concert. Early that morning my brother had surgery in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The day was off to a magical start. After sitting in the waiting room for what felt like a whole lifetime, the nurse finally came to take my brother back. As so as the door closed my mom and I were in the car ready to go shopping.
In the Meyerson Symphony Center on Sunday, November 19th I attended a performance in the magnificent concert hall. The concerts music included L’Ascension by Messiaen, Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani by Francis Poulenc and Camille Saint-Saens piece titled Symphony No. 3, “Organ.” I thought it would be interesting listening to a selection that I had no prior experience with and I had heard that the Dallas Symphony House was not only beautiful in appearance but had fantastic acoustics. The Staircase leading up to the concert hall were very decorated and had a very grand first impression without even stepping into the hall itself.
