When I first considered becoming a speech-language pathologist I was overwhelmed with all the material and knowledge I had to absorb. It is a compelling subject that embraces fascinating procedures and information regarding to speech, hearing, and language. The more information I uncovered in my undergraduate courses the more content I felt with myself for choosing the perfect career path for me. The purpose for my decision to continue my education into your speech-language pathology graduate program is simply because I have the experience and criteria to become an honorable speech-language pathologist.

In 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe published a book that many individuals believed had a large impact on the start of the civil war. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was just one of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s many books; from children’s books to other novels, she wrote and published over thirty pieces of writing. The author’s intent for writing Uncle Tom’s Cabin was to reach out to those in the North and inform them of the hardships and true agony of the life of a slave. The author communicates this through the heartbreaking story of the relationships between the slaveholders and slaves, and by giving the slave characters a storyline and getting the reader attached to those certain characters.

In the profession of speech-language pathology, there are a variety of settings and clients with diverse needs to work with. One is able to work with not only children, but people of all age groups. Throughout my undergraduate program, I was able to gain the necessary skills in order to write professional reports for both medical and educational settings. Becoming a Speech Language Pathologist will require much training and continuing education. There are more than 100,000 Speech-Language Pathologists in the Unites States, 70% of which find themselves employed in elementary or secondary schools. Since the 1950’s, speech teachers have worked with children to improve their speaking or hearing disabilities as well as struggled with the size of their caseload and workload. Groups and organizations have made efforts to solve this problem; none have been fruitful. This is caused by a lack of adequate backing or support. Speech-Language Pathologists employed in schools face many difficulties concerning caseload and workload, including general issues, caseload stress, student placement, and even job shortages.

I believe my family have strongly influenced my view about people from different cultures, my father used to travel for his work, and two of my favorite aunts have spend majority of their life traveling around the world. I’ve grown up hearing about their travel adventures, and fascinating stories about the countries they visited, which has inspired my interest to travel around the world. It also helped that my family loves cooking and we always gather and eat meals to celebrate. Speech-language pathologists, also known as speech therapists, assess, diagnose, treat, and help to control communication and swallowing disorders in patients. Speech-language pathologists try to find out the level of difficulty of their speech, language, or swallowing disorder, and see what type of treatment is needed. They also have to plan the treatments to the patients’ needs. If the patient has swallowing problems then the pathologist has to help the patient strength the muscles that they used to swallow. Then the most important thing a speech pathologist does is that they talk to the patient and their family on how they can help with the communication and swallowing disorder.

Per the previous section, there is a multitude of knowledge that speech pathologists should have, and a significant amount of skills to acquire, thus a lot of education and experience is needed. Getting started in one’s undergraduate education, individuals should consider that there is no required degree, (although prerequisite work may be required) but the most common majors include communication sciences and disorders or cognitive science and linguistics. After shadowing a school-based speech-language pathologist, I instantly fell in love with the career. I was accepted into the University of Central Oklahoma speech-language pathology program, and began taking classes in the fall of 2016. Some of the duties of a speech pathologist are, but are not limited to, evaluate patients’ levels of speech, language, or swallowing difficulty, identify treatment options, teach patients how to make sounds and improve their voices, work with patients to develop and strengthen the muscles used to swallow, and counsel patients and families on how to cope with communication and swallowing disorders (Duties, www.bls.org, 2015). ‘If the speech-language pathologists work in medical facilities, they work with physicians and surgeons, social workers, psychologists, and other healthcare workers’ (Duties, www.bls.org, 2015).

Culture is universal and inescapable. Its expressed through different beliefs and ideas. It follows someone through their ethnicity and communities. The cultural impact is inevitable and permanent. Someone’s culture has a significant impact on the way they view the world and others. This influence is communicated through the individual's upbringing, their culture, as well as their current environment. Situations are perceived differently by those with different values. The fairly full extent of one’s cultural impact is clear.

For Speech and Language Pathologists, there exists a myriad of roles and responsibilities to be met, as it is stated by ASHA, they work to prevent, assess, diagnose and treat speech and/or language difficulties. But cognitive communication is also included, as well as swallowing disorders in both children and adults. From the list of Reflection Tool Summary; I have chosen one option from each of the four areas that I found most appealing to me.

Many people would like to make a difference, not only in their own life, but in others’ lives as well. Deepak Chopra once said, “Everyone has a purpose in life…a unique gift or special talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.” All of us, at one point in our lives, have to make the difficult decision of the goals we want to work towards. We all have certain goals, standards, and expectations of ourselves. Not everyone will figure out what they want to be right away, and some will know from the very beginning.
