Speech Pathologists are allied health professionals that diagnose, treat and rehabilitate patients with communication disorders. In addition, when I am on placement for speech pathology I will be working with patients as well as other allied health professionals; therefore, it is important that I have outstanding communication skills, awareness of different cultures and an understanding of my individual learning preferences. As a consequence of demonstrating all of those characteristics it will make help me get the most out of my placement as possible.

Indicating that there are a lot of cultures that influence Australian society. My personal culture has been significantly influenced by my family that are Australian with a European descendance. My family have shown me how to be a hard worker, value quality time, engage with many people and most importantly how to be accepting towards everyone. Through valuing and loving everyone in our lives, my family demonstrates our culture. My family are excellent at providing hospitality towards everyone that comes into our household. Hereby my family have significantly influenced my cultural identity, as I too find myself providing hospitality to people in my life on a regular basis. Intercultural communication, is the interactions between people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, this type of communicating is essential to healthcare environments (Higgs, Ajjawi, McAllister, Trede, & Loftus, 2012). Furthermore, cultural sensitivity should be displayed everywhere especially when on placement. Cultural sensitivity is essentially showing respect to everyone and treating patients equally regardless of their culture (Moran, Remington Abramson, & Moran, 2014). People are often very protective over their culture hence why being able to conduct these mannerisms is so important (Moran, Remington Abramson, & Moran, 2014). I went to school in Logan which known as one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world (Logan City Council, 2018). In school, I would regularly organise the assemblies, being at a school that was so culturally diverse. I had to make sure that I integrated different cultures and allowed other people to participate in the assemblies in order to make sure no one felt left out. From this situation, I learnt that no one wants to feel left out, everyone wants to feel included. When they feel included they feel respected and valued.
