I am writing with great interest regarding a potential speech-language pathologist opening at Gull Lake Community Schools. During the spring of 2014 I completed an internship at Richland Elementary, working under Shawn Herron and Stacy Robbins. I believe I had the pleasure of meeting you a few times as well. I have spoken with Mrs. Robbins regarding the possible opening this fall and she advised I send my resume to you.

My intensive Speech Language Pathology coursework at California State University- Fresno has provided me with the skills to implement treatment plans, assist during speech and language assessments, and keep formal documentation of client’s progress in speech therapy. These are the necessary skills required to be an effective Speech Language Pathology Assistant and will make me as asset to have in the school speech setting.

During my interview with Speech Pathologist, Deborah Kirsch, I learned countless details about the Speech Pathology career field. When we first began talking, I learned that Mrs. Kirsch works out of a company called “Professional Therapy Services”, where she is contracted out to work for “Eunice Smith Nursing Home” which is located in Alton, Illinois. She has been working at this facility for about a year. She is a newly found graduate from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and she graduated in May 2011. Another thing that I learned about Mrs. Kirsch is that she originally did not go to school to become a speech pathologist, this was a career that she found later in life. After she had graduated from SIUE, the first time with a bachelors in Psychiatry, she started working at a nursing home around this area. She came to know a Speech Pathologist that worked there and she quickly found the field very fascinating. She had always been driven to help others, and she witnessed some of the exercises being done with individuals at the nursing home and decided to go back to school to get her masters in Speech Pathology.

Speech and language therapy helps provide children, young people and their families with life changing treatments and support. Speech and language therapy can provide a wide range of help the services are mainly known for helping children and young people with communication problems but they also help children and young people that have problems eating, drinking and swallowing. Using specialist skills, the speech and language therapy work directly with clients and their careers and help develop tailored support that suits their individual needs. These therapists work alongside teachers and other health professionals, such as doctors and nurses the people that benefit from speech and language therapy range from all ages.

While I am learning an abundance of valuable information at Clarke, my background knowledge derived from my undergraduate studies. I double majored in Speech Pathology and Psychology at Brooklyn College because I believe they compliment each other well when it comes to the studies of speech. Different aspects of Psychology including cognitive science, neuroscience, and biology are essential in understanding speech disorders, language processing, production, acquisition, and comprehension. In my second year at Brooklyn College, I observed children at a nearby elementary school for 50 hours. During this time I observed how children at the kindergarten level interacted with each other. I shadowed the teacher in order to learn different teaching strategies that will be beneficial and applicable as a Speech Therapist.

Communication is vital in life, whether it be from simply having a conversation with someone or trying to understand what they are saying and if a person has a speech disorder, that can make life very complicated. Children with speech disorders may have trouble producing sounds to use spoken language to communicate with people and may have trouble understanding what people are trying to say. Children with speech disorders may have problems with vocal quality, articulation, fluency, hearing, and intellectual abilities. Those difficulties that children may face due to speech disorders can potentially cause setbacks in their everyday life which is why Midlands Therapy Services tries to help children reach their full potential. The career of speech pathology offers many opportunities in a variety of different settings. Today’s speech pathologists are faced with many challenges. However, the field of speech therapy is unique in that when the speech pathologist overcomes a challenges is more often that not a significant triumph in the patients life. It is of massive importance for speech therapist have the following traits good interpersonal skills, the ability to take another’s perspective and problem solving skills.

On October 7, 2017, I shadowed a speech language pathologist at Trustpoint Rehabilitation Hospital. During this time, the therapist was working on the pediatric floor and was administering therapy to different patients every hour. The therapist treated a variety of patients with different needs and goals. Many of the patients had sustained an accidental injury that affected their daily living routines and quality of life.

Communication is very crucial in life, especially in education. Whether it be delivering a message or receiving information, without the ability to communicate learning can be extremely difficult. Students with speech and language disorders may have “trouble producing speech sounds, using spoken language to communicate, or understanding what other people say” (Turkington, p10, 2003) Each of these problems can create major setbacks in the classroom. Articulation, expression and reception are all essential components for communication. There are many requirements that involve education and training, as well as personal requirements and aptitude. To be a Speech Language Pathologist, one must have a sincere interest in helping people, sensitivity, resourcefulness, and imagination. One must also be able to communicate orally and in writing. Michigan Works, an agency that assists with employment, posts jobs that display education and background requirements for obtaining a job as a Speech Language Pathologist. Some requirements include a master’s degree from a speech and hearing program certified by the ASHA, American Speech and Hearing Association, post-certification experience in an institutional setting. Home health experience is also desirable. One must graduate from high school and pass courses in biology, physics, social sciences, English, mathematics, public speaking, language, and psychology. Undergraduate courses should include a strong Arts/Science focus, linguistics, phonetics, anatomy, psychology, human development, biology, physiology, math, physical science, semantics, and social/behavioral science. Communication difficulties associated with cerebral palsy can be multifactorial, arising from motor, intellectual and sensory impairments. Children with this diagnosis can and often do have mild to severe difficulties in expressing themselves. This can include production of speech, language or even gestures due to their poor muscle control, which all influence communication. The process of speech therapy first starts off with a referral and its goal it to maximise their ability communication as best they can and to help them be as independent as possible during social interactions or activities. To improve on both of these there are a few ways to go about it. A speech therapist can choose to introduce an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system. An AAC, is a communication method used to supplement or replace speech or writing for people with impairments in the production or comprehension of spoken or written language. There are things such as symbol charts and communication aids with synthetic speech. However, a speech therapist can also choose to just treat the children's natural forms of communication, without a supplement. Many types of remedies are available to people with cerebral palsy, but sadly there is not a lot of evidence on their ability to improve symptoms

Analytical skills are also expected since speech therapists have to diagnose some patients with diseases such as dementia, and compassion is always useful when dealing with others (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Technological skills are helpful, although not entirely necessary, as technology is becoming increasingly prominent in the field.
