It really is pretty amazing to witness and be aware of sociological concepts in our day-to-day lives. Sociology concepts appear all around us since humans and human organizations are formed through social interactions. Over break, I noticed many sociological concepts but the one that stands out most to me is the appearance management that takes place in a customer service oriented work place. This interaction occurred between employees and their supervisors. I am a Helping Hands employee at Wegmans. Wegmans is a grocery store in the Mid-Atlantic states that is known for its customer service. It is in this customer service setting that employees manage their appearances. I would ingratiate my supervisors to make them like me more and to make me seem like an effective employee. I would use other enhancement with my supervisors by complimenting them in various ways. This enhancement increases how the supervisors see me as a worker. I would also use opinion conformity to increase how much the supervisors liked me. The final ingratiation tactic I would use is selective self-presentation. I would make sure to tell my supervisors whenever I would finish my job early. Each of these methods was important because by increasing how much the supervisors liked me, I made my life easier. Supervisors would give me an easier time and would satisfy many of my requests. The final impression management tactic that I used was emotion management. Emotion management may have been the most important ingratiation tactic that I used over break at work because at work you must always give your best effort. I would use both deep acting and surface acting to show that I was ready to work in a happy way. I would change the way that I felt before going into work by both drawing new and appropriate feeling from below and by simply making it seem like I was happy to be working.
