The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton is about social class conflict, the tension which exists in society between people of different classes due to different interests and desires. The main character, Pony Boy Curtis is a 14 year old boy, who is the narrator and main character of the book, he was named by his that dad died in an auto wreck when he was younger. He has to live with his two older brothers Darry and Sodapop. It is a struggle to live without any parents around. Ponyboy says“We’re poorer than the Socs and the middle class” . Ponyboy's gang the greasers come from the struggling east side, while their rival gang the Socs come from the wealthy west side and also known as the rich snobby rits because the Socs get spoiled and live a luxurious …show more content…

Greasers are always getting jumped by the Socs because they dress differently, or just because they have nothing else exciting to do. The Greasers have to constantly carry weapons like pocket knives around everywhere they go because they never know if they will get jumped by a Soc like Pony did. “ Good behavior. Got off early”- Dallas Winston. In the beginning of this book Dallas just got out of jail, this quote shows that a lot of the characters in this book belong to a criminal class, both greasers and soc. In this book you are classified as greaser, or a soc, there is no in the middle. The Socs and Greasers can't get past the fact that they are some how similar .I can connect to this because I am Jewish, and all my friends are mostly Christians. Just like the Greasers, it is sometimes hard to fit in because I have different beliefs than everyone else. Also, the Greasers get treated differently for who they are, just like how someone might treat me differently because I am Jewish but really I am the same as all of them even though I might be part of a different religion and have different interests or beliefs. “Maybe the two different worlds we live in weren’t so different.
