Congress has tried making all schools year round because America falls behind other countries academically. This would be fine, but for me and the other kids there are certain needs that year round schools do not understand that they’re lacking. For example, educators need time to prepare for the lessons they need to do for the next school year, taking a break from stress can nullify mental and physical damage to children, and without extended breaks kids they will be burnt out and less motivated by the start of the new year. I feel strongly attached to the sayings of John Lubbock, a famous British philosopher, who said “Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach us more …show more content…
According to Herb Scribner, summer vacations can help a child’s physical health, and the stress of worrying about exams and midterms can take a serious toll on their mental health. The physical damage of the constant stress of school added on to, a possibility, of stress at home can take a serious toll on children. These symptoms of extreme stress could be: your arteries taking a beating and not functioning properly, lack of sleep, digestion problems, and the energetic cells within your body will start to deteriorate. The mental toll is more serious among children in high school and middle school. Chronic stress will make a serious impact on part of our ability to resist infection, keep vital functions, and the ability to resist injury. Certain kids who kids who get bullied at school look forward to this time away from their tormentors as a time of relief and peace. Scribner says “Mentally, not only do you become more irritable, depressed, and anxious, but your memory will become worse and you'll make poorer decisions. You'll also be less fun to be with, causing you to become more isolated, lonely, and depressed” (Scribner). Clearly, then, stress is not a good thing. Even people who claim to love the high-pressured lifestyle will admit, in their quieter moments, that there are times when they just want to get away from it all, if only for a short …show more content…
According to Matthew Lynch, students will remember what they learn instead of the majority of students forgetting everything during summer break. It takes from 8 to 13 weeks for teachers to get back up to speed. Either way, when it comes to learning and retention, students who attend year-round schools have nothing to lose and much to gain. It’s also an easy way to bridge the achievement gap. Minority students, students who speak English as a second language, economically disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities are the most affected by the summer fallback. Lynch explains, “Studies have found that disadvantaged students lose about 27 percent more of their learning gains in the summer months than their peers”
Imagine a school year that never ends. A year without summer, relaxation, and vacations with family. Summer is the time of year that every student cannot wait arrive. But what if the playful time filled with friends, smiles, and laughter did not exist? What if school remained in session year-round? This is happening in 3,181 schools across America and is gradually increasing (edweek.org). The government calls it: Year-Round School. There are both many pros and cons to this controversial issue in today’s education; however, Year-Round School is not a good decision because of the social outcomes, the financial costs, and the academic effects that Year-Round School burdens on the students.
Year round school calendars aren’t the best idea we’ve had to improve our educational systems. This is just one of many ideas we’ve had. Year round schooling has affected families, students, and required maintenance in many negative ways.
Do students get bored towards the end of summer? Do students forget what they learned from the school year before? Sarah attends a high school in Indiana, while Hannah goes to a high school in Illinois. Due to the year round schooling (YRS) in Indiana, Sarah has a shortened summer. Sarah receives two-three weeks off of school for winter break, fall break, and spring break. Once Sarah gets back from her breaks, her teacher has one day of review and moves on. Hannah does not have to go to school during the summer but only receives a week or two off here and there. When Hannah returns to start school after summer ends, her teacher takes two weeks to review what they learned the year before. The breaks for Sarah last a lot longer than they do for Hannah. The extensive summer break disconnected Hannah from school and she forgot everything. Year round schooling would benefit students because it would reduce negativity toward school and stress.
To begin with, year round schools are still in session the same number of days (180) just like a traditional school. The 15 days off 15 days on calendar can help students focus and engage longer because they would learn a topic and then have a short break. In most traditional schools students not only tend to lose their knowledge over summer break, but also become bored easily. With that in mind, when children become bored they are most likely to hangout without their friends and possibly cause trouble. Being at school longer and having shorter breaks will keep children out of trouble and focus more on learning and academic activities.
You know that summer vacation that you always take with your family? Well if the school board switches to year-round schooling, you will no longer be able to have that vacation. Year-round schooling is turning into a world-wide new experience. With going to school all year long it ruins old traditions like that family vacation in the summer, and having that long stretch of summer relaxation by the pool and on the beach. Some other issues with year-round schooling is the rising cost and schedule adjustments.
U.S. schools shouldn't switch to year-round school schedules for many reasons. Year round school can be unhealthy for kids for many reasons.
Hey did I hear someone say that we are going to have year round school! I don't want school all year. That would be boring, when would we get a break? That would make more people skip school, wouldn't that be bad?! That’s what I thought.
Imagine, after being in school for 9 weeks you get 2-3 week break. Sounds nice doesn’t it? Well, this can happen. Many schools are switching to year round schooling. Florida should make the switch to it. Students won’t forget what they learned over summer break, and it helps teachers and students get more refreshed. Even though there are positives with implementing year round schooling. (On the other hand) Florida shouldn't make the switch because, it is hard to make schedules for sports, extracurricular activities, and your families schedules. Florida should still switch to year round schooling because there are many good things about it.
This means that when kids come back from summer break, it’s not that they forget everything that they learn, it’s the fact that the students don't remember all the “steps” to it. This means the teachers have to re-teach the students what they already learned. This process can take up to 13 weeks, just think of all the other things that they can be teaching you. When having year round school this would not be a problem because, you don't have as much time off, that way the students won't forget all the “steps” that they have learned. To add on to that, studies show us that the US is lagging in getting the best education.
What do you do during summer break? Do you go on a long family trip, or do you have to get a job? Now imagine if those plans were ruined by year round schooling. Year round schooling is not beneficial for students and teachers because it can cause more stress, students get summer jobs, and people go on family trips and spend time with family and friends during summer break.
In the entire world, America is placed 48th and Japan is 1st in school rankings. I believe Japan is only in 1st because they have an all year round school so they get more enrichment. On the other hand, USA has many breaks such as summer, winter, spring, and maybe ski-week. Schools should lengthen our hours not just to be in a higher ranking but also for students to get more enrichment. First of all, if we lengthen our school hours the students get extra improvement and instruction. This extra time can give teachers more time to answer questions and give more experience. Research has shown that in schools who have lengthened their hours the students test scores raised from 5-10%. Another reason is that the longer days can help prepare students
With students taking classes all year round they are constantly using their knowledge and adding on to it, making it awfully difficult to forget. LeighAnne Lyttle, a member of the U.S. Department of Education, states, “Data collected across the country has proven that year-round schools are the best way for children to get the most of their education providing better scores and learning habits than those of traditional schools. Traditional schools offer the most time off, but it is apparent in the grades of children and attitudes of teachers. More time off between semesters means more time reviewing and getting remedial students back into the swing of school. The best way to teach and to learn is to use a year-round calendar system that benefits students’ achievements and teachers’ motivation” (Lyttle) With the U.S. Department of Education having this information and studies to back it up they should be enforcing all public schools to switch over to year round schooling. Studies can be found though that prove there is no difference between the two types of systems, but this verdict is heavily outmatched and the studies also do not prove that traditional schooling is better. Year round schools offer superior retention for students, which allows students to always be moving forward in
A teacher who was part of a year round system recounts, “I found myself going through 3 school years without that opportunity for self-assessment and planning for the future of the educational program.” (“The Effect of Year Round Schools” 1999/22 February 2005). With a much shorter summer break, teachers will not have enough time to increase their education, which can benefit the learning of their students. For these reasons, year round schools are not as beneficial as the traditional school year.
“It’s for the public it’s year round and it 's also for the schools because we 're going to re-establish our school programs and all our outreach programs” Susan Hayward. Will year round schooling help or benefit the schools of the United States and society? Year round schools could change the reasons why teachers are teaching ("Top 10 Reasons"). Elimination of extended breaks from schools in the United States. would be beneficial to the population.
Dr. Matthew Lynch from, “Education New” states that, “Students tend to forget a lot during summer break, so a shorter time away from school might increase retention rates” (Watson). Dr.Lynch is saying that having a shorter summer break will tend more to the students, because they will remember and learn more than what a student who has the whole summer off.
