Year round school calendars aren’t the best idea we’ve had to improve our educational systems. This is just one of many ideas we’ve had. Year round schooling has affected families, students, and required maintenance in many negative ways.
Most major maintenance jobs wouldn’t be completed in a timely manner on a year round school schedule. Major school repairs are done over long summer breaks when the schools are mostly empty. Sometimes, windows have to be removed and fixed. This can’t be done with students around (EnderleMay). Over long breaks, tables, walls, desks, chairs, light fixtures and floors receive a thorough cleaning. With breaks taken away, and students in the classroom all the time, it makes it very hard for things like this
possible con to a year-round school calendar is the lack of time for recreational summer activities
The number of year-round schools in the United States, at the moment, is 3,181. Additionally, only a mere 10% of public school children are enrolled in year-round school. The idea of a year-round school is a really neglected one. Most schools have adopted the ‘Traditional’ idea of a school year that has a summer break. However, a year round school has periodic, shortened breaks, which helps the students, and the teachers alike. Having year-round school is a revolutionary idea, and it should be adopted into the Public School System, nationally.
Do students get bored towards the end of summer? Do students forget what they learned from the school year before? Sarah attends a high school in Indiana, while Hannah goes to a high school in Illinois. Due to the year round schooling (YRS) in Indiana, Sarah has a shortened summer. Sarah receives two-three weeks off of school for winter break, fall break, and spring break. Once Sarah gets back from her breaks, her teacher has one day of review and moves on. Hannah does not have to go to school during the summer but only receives a week or two off here and there. When Hannah returns to start school after summer ends, her teacher takes two weeks to review what they learned the year before. The breaks for Sarah last a lot longer than they do for Hannah. The extensive summer break disconnected Hannah from school and she forgot everything. Year round schooling would benefit students because it would reduce negativity toward school and stress.
Also, “without public support, year-round will fail because the parent’s reluctance to send their children” (Gee, 795). Parent reluctance comes from the lack of synchronized time off for vacation. Work schedules do not typically run on a 45/15 plan and without three months break, families lose time for a vacation. If a school decides to go year-round, communication between the community and school would have must be very clear as to when students are supposed to be in school (Wildman et al. 465).
U.S. schools shouldn't switch to year-round school schedules for many reasons. Year round school can be unhealthy for kids for many reasons.
Does year round school truly have a positive impact in the lives of students? Various studies do suggest that year round school is helpful. There are some disadvantages to this type of schooling that are preventing all schools from switching to this type of scheduling. In earlier times schools were only teaching throughout half of the year so that school would be out of session when it was time to work in the fields. This type of scheduling is still common today even though only a small portion of agriculture is tied into education and kids are no longer required to work. “In 1994, the National Education Commission on Time and Learning (1994) urged school districts to develop school calendars that acknowledged (a) differences in student learning and (b) the major changes taking place in American society. The report reflected growing concern about how the school calendar relates to students at risk for academic failure” (Cooper, Nye, Charlton, James, & Greathouse). As a result. many are fighting for year-round school. Year-round school has proven to be beneficial in the lives of students and has lead to greater success in the classroom. Although, there are some downfalls to year-round schooling.
What is your school doing to improve test scores? Well if nothing here is a solution, year round schooling. According to a recent study, on summer vacation students spend up to 13 hours on there electronics. Year round school could help families with low incomes by taking their kids why they go to work. About ten percent of public school students attend school year round. With all of these facts I think we should have school year round.
Hey did I hear someone say that we are going to have year round school! I don't want school all year. That would be boring, when would we get a break? That would make more people skip school, wouldn't that be bad?! That’s what I thought.
Imagine, after being in school for 9 weeks you get 2-3 week break. Sounds nice doesn’t it? Well, this can happen. Many schools are switching to year round schooling. Florida should make the switch to it. Students won’t forget what they learned over summer break, and it helps teachers and students get more refreshed. Even though there are positives with implementing year round schooling. (On the other hand) Florida shouldn't make the switch because, it is hard to make schedules for sports, extracurricular activities, and your families schedules. Florida should still switch to year round schooling because there are many good things about it.
Did you know many schools attend year round school? In my opinion I think that we shouldn’t have year round school. For instance, if you have a long distance family member, and you ant to visit them, how would you be able to do that? Also how are you going to go on vacation and spend more than a weekend there? You wouldn’t unless your parents were off and they took you out of school.
Nooooo, is what most kids say when you tell them they have to go to year round school. But really they should be thanking you. Some people think that there should be year round school, but others don’t think that there should be year round school. Schools should have year round school. For example most schools switch to year round school, in the article nea Today Tower say “This year, multiple schools adopted year-round schedules to help them improve academically” (Tower).
What do you do during summer break? Do you go on a long family trip, or do you have to get a job? Now imagine if those plans were ruined by year round schooling. Year round schooling is not beneficial for students and teachers because it can cause more stress, students get summer jobs, and people go on family trips and spend time with family and friends during summer break.
How would the population react if the schedule that structures many peoples’ entire year were to change? This change is a reality for a growing number of families across the country as a method of improving primary and secondary education through year-round school. Although many have come to accept or even embrace year-round school in an effort to help students retain more material, year-round school would actually disrupt the learning environment, be potentially detrimental for students and their family’s financial health, as well as that of the schools, and could take away from family and personal time.
Is the traditional school calendar really the best option for your local school system? Maybe, having a year-round schooling system would be best. Year-round education is when schools operate on a 180 day school calendar with frequent breaks. Year-round calendars also don’t include a long summer vacation(Melissa Kelly, February 21,2017). A traditional school in America has a 10-month school calendar, but, many are switching to the year-round calendar. Some are switching to maintain more consistent instruction. A few others are switching in order to save money(Grace Chen, July 2017, Public School Review). There are over 3,000 year-round schools in the United States today. Year-round schools first started in major cities or towns like, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Buffalo and Detroit. But, Los Angeles has the most year-round schools, over 500, in the nation. And there are only 10% of public school students who attend a year-round school. This can be beneficial for both teachers, students and even the families involved. The dropout rate is 2% lower than traditional schools( Niche ,2016). The absence rate is also lower, about 1% lower to be exact. This type of system can increase the school building capacity which means there’s no overcrowding. More education would be provided to lower income families or a child that is disabled. Studies also show that year-round schools have higher test scores than traditional schools. Changing the traditional school calendar
A school’s normal calendar on the western United States is usually from early August to late May, and a school’s calendar on the eastern side of the United States is from early September to late June. But what if all schools started to switch to a all year-round calendar? A longer school calendar is not a good idea, because staff and students deserve a long summer vacation, there would be a problem with scheduling adjustments, and it would affect energy consumption for schools.
