“The great majority of school shootings are perpetrated by victims of bullying.” states Izzy Kalman (qtd in Kalman) I believe that school violence can be stemmed from bullying. The violence is often caused by the victims of bullying or the bullies themselves. I was bullied as a child and I remember how humiliated I would feel some days. Over time, that humiliation turned into anger, and in turn I wanted to hurt those that had hurt me. I never did hurt anyone, but that isn’t always the case. Bullying is a problem that is not taken seriously enough and can lead to school shootings and suicide. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among people of all ages, but mostly school-age children. Society has been aware of bullying since around 1693, but it was not viewed as a real problem until the 1970s. “While overall incidents of school violence, such as assault and theft, have declined in the last decade, bullying is on the rise.” (qtd in Tyre) The percentage of middle and high school students that have been victimized by bullying went up from 14 percent in 2001 to 32 percent in 2009. (Tyre) Many people believe that violent video games play a big role in the violence we see in schools today. Gaming plays a large role in children’s lives and have begun to …show more content…
A victim can only handle so much before they begin to struggle emotionally and academically. When their emotional well-being begins to decline, most parents step in and take their child to counseling. More times than not, children are put on anti-depressants to help cope and feel better. However, anti-depressants do not stop the bullying. “The Physicians Desk Reference (PDR) records that, during controlled clinical trials of Luvox, one type of antidepressant, manic reactions developed in 4 percent of children. Mania is defined as "a form of psychosis characterized by exalted feelings, delusions of grandeur ... and overproduction of ideas.” (qtd in O'Meara
The Columbine High School Shooting allowed for us to see flaws within our police force. Throughout the Columbine shooting, there were many errors made by police. The police didn’t know the killers were dead, so they looked all throughout the school for bombs. They also feared that “the fallen bodies had been booby-trapped with explosives” (CITE), making them move slowly. These missed calculations impacted the lives of many. Dave Sanders, one of the teacher fatally injured, was in the science room bleeding out. The police knew this but didn’t arrive “until nearly 3 pm. When they arrived, they found more than fifty students with Sanders, who was barely clinging to life. A paramedic tried to stop his bleeding, but it was too late. Sanders died
Perry stated, that the problem to fixing the campus shooting is not being solved correctly instead the government is making the process for obtaining guns much easier. Perry’s argument is solid because, he includes a personal attack that he received from a past student. Also he talks about the new law that is about to take place, which allows students to carry firearms on campus. He could have included some of his colleague’s thoughts on the issue as well, so that the readers can get more first-hand perspectives on the student’s violent
Schools were once treated as a haven, but between 10 years, the amount of student shootings has dramatically risen from 43 to 101. Now people think that we need to go back to the barbaric saying of ‘kill or be killed’, but there are more ways to skin a cat - and more ways of controlling this horrid situation.
Longs as religion is out of the schools we will have many shootings. It doesn’t have to be all about Christians or Muslims. It should be about prayer and let kids or teacher pray when they can. I remember when I was in school all Muslims would leave for prayer on Fridays and the school would provide the bus service for it. Everything wants to be control by government and to be honest government is behind all these shootings and mass murders. Do your research it speaks for itself. Example. How do you have 3 military guys in France take down a shooter who was about to shoot up the train. Now he is a hero and known all over the world gets recognition. Few weeks ago same guy who took down the shooter gets stabs in California by some stranger and
It? Violence in school’s has been a uprising problem two shootings have happened in the same month march 2018 one in florida the other in maryland.
In the United States, we are experiencing more mass shootings in schools with many kids and adults dying because of ineffective laws and lawmakers stating that “guns protect peoples”, because of this we should protect ourselves with more gun regulations then deadly guns .One of these problem with self defence is that people who arm themselves could accidentally kill a loved one by either not knowing how to fire a gun or mistaken the person for a intruder. Another problem is of having guns around homes, where it can a initiated a conflict between peoples and either factions could say that they were using it for self defense. In contrast, if we have gun control laws there will be fewer mass shootings/deaths and it will make the U.S.
School shootings are a big problem in the U.S. right now. There have been about eleven school shootings since the beginning of 2018. Should teachers have a firearm in the classroom at all time to fire at the shooter if they get in the classroom? Teachers should not be able to have a firearm in classroom because one of the children could get the gun and it creates more problems.
The world is a strange place. People complain about others not taking charge but in reality they do not even make an effort to make change. Instead of caring for “things on which our very existence depends (ch1-3),” people would rather focus on terrorist attacks across the world and events that are eye-catching, not events that are taking place in their own backyards. Every day on television one hears of murders, robberies, and other tragic. When one hears of these tragic events they blink an eye as if they are normal. No one takes the precaution of preventing a break in, a disease, a school shooting, and the list goes on. If people started caring and taking more precaution, the world might make great progress instead of taking steps backwards.“If
A series of events involving guns has brought the United states to a realization that they might need to take action before more people get hurt. One event that has occurred among many is the shooting in Parkland Florida. On February 14, 2018 17 year old Nikolas Cruz took an AR-15 assault rifle into his former high school Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killing 17 and wounding others. This was the deadliest school shooting since 2012 and Sandy Hook Elementary School. The government needs to keep guns out of people's hand that are not qualified or stable enough to own a gun, Also they government needs to create stricter requirements hand and or own a gun, Lastly, the government needs to to this to keep innocent adults and children safe.
In 12 of 15 school shootings in the 90’s, the shooters had a history of being bullied (Effects of Bullying). Depression, anxiety, dismal and basic biological needs are a result of bullying. According to 11 Facts About Bullying, over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year and approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. Bullying can lead to self harm, isolation, and loss of interests. The factors that contribute to the behavior of bullies is their home life, the way they think, and external events around them.
There's been another school shooting. This phrase is one that should never become second nature. Unfortunately, the frequency in which these atrocities are happening are making it a phrase with which many are becoming numb. After all, according to a Washington Post article based on a Department of Defense numbers claimed there have been twice as many students killed in school shootings than adults who lost their lives will actively deployed in the military.
Most of the stories seen in the news today always seem to have something to do with the irresponsible use of firearms or mass shootings in public places. In the past couple of years there has been at least two huge shootings that have ended up with many people dead, others seriously wounded, and families left heartbroken. Activists are wondering how many more innocent lives must be lost in order to revise these gun owning policies. Irresponsible users, such as people with mental or emotional instability, have been able to purchase or have access to guns with ease and have caused tragedies that have left families and communities broken down and defenseless. Some say that it is not fair to put every gun owner through all of this hassle with background
Imagine randomly getting a call from the police department, saying your child's school has been attacked by a mass shooter, and your child was a victim. Mass shootings happen many times a day, everyday. In the first 336 days of 2015, there were 354 mass shootings taken place in the US. Half of these shootings happened in schools. Since 2013, there has been at least 185 school shootings in America. People live in fear of guns. It’s not right. Everyday, people should feel safe sending their children to school, knowing they will be okay. The point I’m getting at is a serious discussion that has been around for about 2 or 3 years now. Should teachers be allowed to carry concealed weapons with them on campus? Should students be able to do this?
In December 2013, 28 people including 20 children were shot to death at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, which caused school officials and parents to reflect on methods for better protection of students’ safety. Recently, United University issued a regulation of checking backpacks or book bags randomly for weapons such as guns and knives, and those who are found to carry weapons will receive certain punishments. It was said that the random search was able to forbid weapons on campus and improve the sense of safety among students. In my point of view, the random search may not as effective as considered and, to some extent, might cause some problems.
