Sam Houston was a revolutionary leader and a hero. He was fortunate to possess the skills that made him a leader. He was an inspiring leader, and he once said to cheer up his soldiers: “You will remember this battle! Each minute! Each second! Until the day that you die! But that is for tomorrow, gentlemen. For today, remember the Alamo!” Samuel Houston was loyal, respected, and determined.
Sam Houston was loyal due to the fact that he embraced a new culture and stayed with it. He welcomed the society of the Cherokees. At age 16, he preferred staying with the Cherokees rather than going to school or working at the shop where he held a job. Houston ran away from home to live among the Cherokees for six years. He considered the Cherokee his family, and Oolooteka, the chief of the tribe, adopted Sam as his own son. Sam was given the name Colonneh. When he turned 18, Samuel returned to his home to earn money, but he came back again to stay with the Cherokees for three years as an adult. He went even further in immersing himself in the culture of the Cherokees; he dressed like them. At this time, it was common to kill an Indian, but Houston was openly going against popular actions. He even said "I am aware that in presenting myself as the advocate of the Indians and their rights, I shall stand very much alone." Houston was widely liked by the Cherokees, so he was granted citizenship. He resolved issues between tribes from time to time. He even established a trading post called Wigwam Neosho on the Neosho River for them and took an Indian girl named Tiana Rodgers as his wife. Although he went against the norms of society by accepting the Cherokee, he had an outgoing personality that attracted others and he was elected continuously. The same year he became a lawyer (1818), he became a district attorney of the District of Nashville. In 1823 and 1825, he was elected to Congress-twice. In 1827, he became the Tennessee governor. He was also elected commander in chief in 1836 of the ad interim for the army of Texas. He was even chosen as the first president of the Republic of Texas of 1836, and he was again elected five years later in 1841. Houston was voted to become the Texas state senator from 1849-1859, for ten years. He was also the Texas state governor from 1859-1861. There was literally no time between the periods that Houston was elected for the multiple positions he held. His decision were worthy to Texas and they were justified. Even today, there are many monuments honoring Same Houston and his actions, such as the stature in Huntsville, Texas. The citizens of Texas were typically in his favor, but the Mexicans were not because of his skills and
