The Roman family life was a very simple and complex system at the same time. Every aspect of life for the typical Roman family was male dominated, they were in on every decision. The everyday family life was based on social status and diplomatic classifications. Everything from jobs to entertainment that could be participated in was based on gender or social standing within the community. Religion played a significant role in the Roman civilization but, “many people believe that Rome was not a religious place. The Romans were not unique in the ancient world for brutality. In fact, the only reasons they have such a reputation for it is becuase of the scale and entertainment of it. That was their culture. These ancient people, not just the latins themselves, grew out of violent tribal cultures existing in Europe.

Ancient Rome was split into two classes: the aristocrats, known as the patricians, and the lower class, known as the plebeians. They lived harmoniously alongside each other for a while, but after Rome began to rise from it’s ashes the plebeians became resentful and decided to take action. To fully understand the degree of their anger some light needs to be shined on their situation, and how the patricians treated them.

The Roman nuclear family, composed of parents and children, shared lives intimately and influenced each other in ways outsiders did not. Livy, in a quote debating the legal status of children between patricians and plebeians, stated “Of course, the children follow the father.” In Roman society, fathers were considered the most powerful. Romans believed in a theoretical concept of a father’s absolute control, but in reality, all family had power and fathers could be challenged.

I was very interested in learning about the family values of early Romans. Like many of the early cultures women held little to no power over anything especially themselves; but unlike other cultures Roman women (mainly affluent women) slowly gained independence and could gain control over their estates. I live in my house with my mother, my father, and my little brother. I live with both my parents who work as a Ps and RM at banks. My house hold is pretty even in decision making powers, both parents normally get a say. Most tasks are spread out pretty evenly as well, my dad normally takes over cooking tasks and my mom will do the bills. My brother is too young to have chores, but I am responsible for the dishes and laundry. The Roman way of life is different and similar to modern day. Though one may not know much over the Roman’s the culture is fascinating and still remembered in history. The clothes, food, customs, and leisure are major in Roman lifestyle.
