Jimmy Cross; the protagonist of Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”, remembers his dates and correspondences with Martha, and escapes the harsh realities of the Vietnam War. These memories contain strong imagery, including speculations surrounding Martha’s virginity (233).These memories serve as a protection at first, but they hinder his performance as the leader of his platoon, causing the death of Ted Lavender (236). The images related to Martha become more indifferent and realistic after the death. Jimmy Cross’ experiences in Vietnam have much to do with why he thinks of Martha, and the tone of his thoughts.

How did Elizabeth Eckford stay at Central High after all the things people did to her? For my final sense of place, I decided to watercolor my experience in my sense of place. It’s an expression of what I’m thinking so my face is in the middle. The top layer, painted in red and yellow, is Arizona. There are two sides to this layer- that with cacti and that with mesas. The cacti represent southern Arizona where I live and the mesas symbolize northern Arizona where the rez is and my family lives. Then, the lower layer is Dartmouth. To the left is the forest and the beauty of New Hampshire. On the other side is Dartmouth Hall which is very different and separated from the forest- Dartmouth is a bubble and is separated from the normality of its surroundings. Between these two layers is the sky- a mixture of blue and purple. Traveling between the two places is very emotional because I have close relationships in both places.

Stagger Lee lost his money, his hat, or both depending on the variation of the song you choose to believe. Stagger Lee decides this can’t stand so he kills William “Billy” Lyons with a gun to get his hat or money, or both back. Stagger Lee decides he doesn’t like the outcome of the card/dice game and uses violence to reverse the outcome in his favor. Suge Knight has a propensity to do the same thing with violence. According to Rolling Stone magazine, “Knight met a young MC named Mario Johnson, who complained that he'd written much of Vanilla Ice's To the Extreme. Knight saw his opportunity, which supposedly led to the notorious hotel-room confrontation with the white Florida rapper. Ice settled with Knight for an unspecified amount. It was his first big payday.” (Rolling Stone http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/suge-knight-endless-fall-20150706#ixzz3kh6dAfRX).
