The Role of African Americans African Americans were a big part of the Revolutionary War. According to the Declaration of Independence “all men are created equal” but the African Americans questioned whether or not that applied to them. Before independence was even declared many blacks joined the continental army but General Washington didn’t let them join because he thought that the runaway slaves would take advantage of army. In, “History Alive!” they state, “Washington did not want the army to become a haven for runaway slaves.” (pg. 122).
