Start studying at British University of Vietnam, and to be more specific, the Foundation course, I was assigned to have presentations and a reflective essays. One of the presentations that I remember and spent most afford on is Managing Practices for today’s Global Economy.
According to Robbins, DeCenzo & Coulter, 2015, there are five stages of group development, which are: Forming - Storming - Norming - Performing - Adjourning. And I believe after one month working together, we have been through almost of these stages. We started the forming stage right after being formed by balloting. After greeting each other, we immediately move to norming stage, as Maren assigned us a task to analyse the functions of manager of several brands.
During the time preparing for the presentation, my team and I still had some weakness that needs improving. As my team consisted of 8 people - the maximum number of a team, therefore, there were times that we had misunderstandings between each other. The fact also took us more time when discussing and justifying our opinions. In order to complete our final ideas, all of us had to understand them clearly and thoroughly so it took more time for this process. Also, as the team had too many people so it was hard to fix a schedule for every member to have a meeting together. But we solved this problem by discussing online with members who cannot come to the meeting directly. Luckily for us, despite all those problems, we did not have any conflicts and all problems were solved in peace. So, in other words, I think our team skipped the storming stage.
One of the things I am proud of my team is every one had special responsibilities, including me. In terms of work assignment, our team divided it equally, as two members would take charge of one question. This helped every member felt comfortable, as well as, there was always one member to support them with the question. Also, through the process, I have done some work that affected positively to the team. First of all, as I am pretty confident of my skills in presentation, as well as I had several experience in writing scripts, so I was the one that wrote the presentation script for the team, and gave them the comments for others' speaking,

Similar to Tuckman’s five stages of group development is Corey and Corey, they claim that the first stage; Pregroup is “setting expectations, establishing group rules and procedures, role preparation and skills building” (Corey, Corey, Corey 2010 p123). The group did well in this stage, as the group was given a very clear aim, we discussed each members skill sets and while preparing a group contract with our aims objectives and rules. A group contract is a very useful facilitation tool as it sets out very clear guidelines for the group and defines what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour for the group members (Tuckman 1965). The group members were able to gain clarity from the group contract, allowing them to identify the norms and boundaries of the group. For example our group decided that if a member were for any reason not be able to attend a meeting they would have to let the team know in advance, if this did happen the rest of the team would relay the information via email to the missing group member.
As people, when confronted with a problem where a solution must be found, our ideal situation is to come up with the best possible one. To do this, we ideally gather the most knowledgeable, intelligent individuals into a group and attempt to derive the best solution to the problem. With the collection of these people, one would think that finding the best possible answer to the problem would be a rather simple task. However, what has happened in many situations is the complete opposite. Eventhough, most teams never reach full stability, there is a general pattern that describes how most teams evolve. There are five stages of team development, the first stage is forming. In this stage there is a great deal of uncertainty about the teams purpose, structure and leadership. Members are testing the the waters to determine what types of behaviors are acceptable. This stage is complete when members began to think of themselves as part of the team. The second stage is called storming. In this stage there is much intragroup conflict.Team members accept the existence of the team, but there is resistance to the control that the team imposes on individuality. Conflict can arise from numerous sources within the team setting but generally falls into three categories:communication, factors, structural factors and personal factors (Varney, 1989/Townsley). In addition, there is conflict over who will control the team.
