ESSAY 1: Please describe a situation in which you worked with people from different backgrounds and what you learned from that experience. (max 1,200 characters) In 2014, I completed an internship at Vocon, a well-known architecture firm in Manhattan. Working at Vocon was unfamiliar for me. My coworkers had a very different background than mine: a young French girl with no true working experience within a group of senior American architects and designers coming from all the country and working in Manhattan where they renovate headquarters of famous companies. Quickly I found my mark since growing up in an international environment and having spent lot of my life outside of my home country has shaped my character. It has developed good comfort …show more content…
Over time my energy and my commitment helped in becoming a true member of the team. I was also able to play with my specific background to raise interest and engage with others. Lastly, I was always careful in using my interlocutor’s code of communication. This experience was successful. My mentor gave me positive feedbacks on how easy I am to work with. She was amazed by my adaptability without compromising my personality. This was like a gift for me because I strongly feel a citizen of the world. I do not see myself part of any cluster. I want to be an active member of my community but I want to be part of several communities. ESSAY 2: Briefly describe a time in which you had to step out of your comfort zone and what you learned from that experience. (max 1,200 characters) Since the age of five, I am passionate about sailing. I have spent a significant part of my summer time in the ‘Institut Sport & Ocean’ (Les Sables d’Olonne, France) where I have acquired robust technical skills while building a strong network of friends making me feel in a comfortable …show more content…
The course gave me a new prospective while building on foundational concepts I have learned at school during my ‘Economics & Social Science’ courses as well as leveraging my interest for international and multi-cultural matters. I was particularly intrigued and interested by the session we had about a comparative analysis of productive efficiency between the US and Japan. I discovered the importance of the legal matters such as patents or international arbitration. I also enjoyed working as a team on a practical case study. In our group we decided to work on the introduction of a US Fashion brand on the French market going through the overall strategic business
“The sooner you step away from your comfort zone, you'll realize that it really wasn't all that comfortable.” This quote by Eddie Harris Jr. allows us to recognize that comfort zones aren’t good for progress in almost any scenario imaginable. When we stay in a place that is so repetitive and familiar that we become stagnant, it is so incredibly hard to push ourselves to get out of it. One of the most valuable skills we can have is the ability to recognize when our comfort zones are holding us captive from experiencing new things and growing from those circumstances. In Source 1, “Tiptoeing Out of One’s Comfort Zone (and Of Course, Back In)”, by Alina Tugend, the protagonist describes her recent experiences having stepped out of her comfort
During the summer of 2014, I participated in Bucksmore’s Young Leader Program in Cambridge. There, I took classes about Marketing and International Laws, while I was exposed to new experiences such as group debates in public. I definitely enjoyed the experience, I was encouraged by a very strong report card and I started building my conviction.
Our goal is to help you have the best sailing experience possible, while you are on deck or sleeping in your cabin.
• Have fun by making it an enjoyable experience to be part of the team.
As a psychology major, it is important to know how to work with diverse populations, especially in today’s society. It seems that there are more cultural groups today, compared to the past because of groups such as LGBTQ and an increase in immigration to America from more countries than just Europe and Africa. In America, we expect people to know how to speak English and have a basic understanding of the American culture, but for the most part, Americans lack a willingness to understand other people’s cultures. While some do not want to take the time to understand different cultures, those individuals who work with diverse populations have to understand different cultures in order to truly help those from diverse situations. In order to learn
The first thing I learned from being on a team was responsibility. Volleyball stressed this concept heavily because members relied on each other to be at practice and games so that we can grow and bond together to form a stronger team. With this responsibility came learning how to effectively communicate. Communication was essential especially in a coach to athlete situation, much like a boss to employee scenario, because if we could not attend practice or we were injured, the coach (boss) had to know. I strive to be an effective communicator at my current job and future career in graphic design so that my customers can get the best experience possible. With my ever-improving skills in communication, holding responsibility for myself and this Bay scholarship, I will be able to reach my goal of living a successful life as a graphic
It was the first day of my freshman year in college. It was a warm sunny day, and I was eager to experience walking from class to class outside for the first time. That may not seem like a big deal for most people, but it felt like newfound freedom to me; a breath of fresh air. I was unusually calm for something as overwhelming as this, but I did not question it. I told myself that I was a new person here. I could be whoever I desired.

Chapter 5: How accepting are you of others in a diverse work/school environment? What diverse characteristics in others are difficult for you to work with? How can you overcome these barriers? Explain how diversity can enhance the work environment. Explain.
To participate in the Diversity Project would be excellent experience to partake in research and gain knowledge on integrative approach towards the study of biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems. Through field work and laboratory training, I would be participating in laboratory research which will complement career development that will help with successfully applying to graduate school and choosing a career. With this experience it will enhance my academic goals by allowing me to get a firsthand experience in collaborating with other researchers and help them in their research. With this it will help in my academic goals because with this research I could use the experience as an internship class required for my major and possible use it for
As the youngest south Asian girl in a family with traditional values expanding my understandings of social value and public health to race, ethnicity and sexuality is an exciting process. I am now studying my master at the University of Manchester in Gender, Sexuality and Culture. My ambition to gain more knowledge of the power systems of complex identities and social value has grown over the years at university. My interest in social value and public health studies arose from my research from my undergraduate degree at Coventry University. Exploring and challenging current cultural identities, in particular, those of ethnicity has been a personal interest of mine throughout my further education. My undergraduate dissertation explored the history of India and Hinduism and how the homophobic attitudes have affected British Asian attitudes in the Hindu community. Since my undergraduate dissertation, I am now exploring how men’s mental health is now in the process of de-stigmatization.
When my mom was starting high school, there weren’t many options for women in sailing. While today new boat designs in addition to more inclusive atmosphere have generated greater acceptance for girls in sailing, this was not the case 35 years ago.
However, I have to admit that eliminating the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse in-class groups turned out to be one of the most challenging aspects of my learning experience. I learned and understood how
