The History of Rap
Rap music has been around since slaves worked the fields. Rap music is a form of music where a story is told through singing. Although rap has been around since slaves worked in the fields, the lyrics have changed, the focus of the songs have grown deeper in meaning, and rappers have rapidly changed over the years, causing this genre of music to grow in popularity all over the world.
Rappers have evolved over the years, managing to create more complex songs and have complex background lives. Now, rap lyrics are about are less about being successful, and more about that particular artist’s rise to fame(The Evolution of Rap).Rap was considered a type of “Street Art” by African American teenagers in the 1970’s, before rap music really took off. According to HarvardPolitics, “The most striking difference between 1990’s rap music and modern day songs is the lyrics.” Old rap lyrics were relatively simple, the beat was simple and flow of rhythm was simple.people labeled this type of rap music as “Old School”. But rap lyrics evolved, becoming what people now refer to as, “New School” rap music. The lyrics were more complex and rappers started to spit out faster and more controversial verses in their songs, especially Eminem, who was labeled the King of Controversy for his time(History of Rap Music). In modern rap songs, most songs, if you take a look at the lyrics, are about drugs and alcohol and having everything that money can buy.
