People from all over are connected to each other through the power of music. When it comes to music, the life experiences, inspiration, and current events play a tremendously significant role. Hip hop is a form of art which can be expressed through rap songs, break-dancing, and graffiti art. The culture has become so popular that it has entered today’s fashion and modern language. Hip hop music is an extremely large part of today’s generation and a global genre, which influences the generation all over the world.

Music is one of the greatest ways of expressing one’s personal feelings and experiences through the use of story-telling. One of the most popular genres of music is rap or also known as hip hop. Hip hop music has a profound effect, both positive and negative on many of today’s youth which transforms and evolves American culture and society. What started it all was the origin of “gangsta rap”, which was popularized by gangster rappers such as Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, Ma$e, Snoop Dogg, and Scarface. These were all rappers who influenced American culture and made the genre of rap and hip hop more mainstream which captivated many listeners not only on a local level, but on an international level. However, some of the lyrics that were stated were not only meaningful, but sometimes controversial in the eye of the general public. Nonetheless, hip hop music has always had an influence on many generations and their shaping of what we know today of the modern American society and culture.

As it was stated before, hip-hop became not only a genre of music, but a culture and a movement. People who listen to that music view themselves as more than fans. Hip hop culture has the potential to help the youth follow their dreams and become better people it just needs to go back to its roots and bring those morals back up again.

Hip-hop music started in the mid 1970’s, but some say that it started much earlier. Many people today would argue that Hip Hop is disgraceful now a days, and that it has no positive message given. Me personally, I would agree since the days have changed over time. I could also argue that music as a whole has changed and wouldn’t always be the same, but that’s not the main point. In our schools today, we need to start reinforcing the creative abilities of the younger generation and allow encourage them to express themselves. This is where, Hip Hop Based Education comes into play. Also known as HHBE, this a movement that helps bring hip hop into the classroom. “We are experiencing a generational shift in the U.S. teaching force. Because of this shift, along with the increased presence of hip-hop culture within American culture, many educators no longer view hip-hop culture with the same air of skepticism common in the early stages of HHBE” (Love). HHBE has many positive and influential outcomes for children living in inner cities. By bringing hip hop and rap music into schools it serves as an educational tool for educators as it “acts as an outlet so such people could express themselves angrily…they often used gangsta rap to tell the stories of their lives, which sometimes included strong violence, hypersexuality, and drug abuse”(Canton). We have to step away from the fact that most people associate hip hop as a form of negative influence that has violent tendencies and start realizing that artists using their music to spread a positive message to help influence others and their actions. “In high-crime areas, putting on these made up personas is life-threatening, but the fact that gangsta rappers told the stories of others is often seen as having earned them respect for raising awareness of the severity of inner-city crime” (Canton).
