I am interested in the Masters of Public Health program partnership at Youngstown State University and Northeast Ohio Medical University. This program will give me the opportunity to make a difference in the world by improving community health and educating people about proper health care, and to enhance my skills by advancing in my career. I have currently completed my undergraduate degree in Biology at Youngstown State University through the BSMD program, which will help me understand the scientific and technical side of public health and medicine. I feel like this degree has provided me with the knowledge of the world around me by studying organisms and their complexities and understanding how the body works. This biology degree will prove …show more content…
With general public health, I can further expand my knowledge on public health concepts and practices and also work with the different areas of public health such as epidemiology, biostatistics, and administration. I am also interested in outreach and the social and behavioral science concepts of public health. This includes learning the intervention, design, and implementation of solutions for modern public health problems, as well as learning the theory of behavioral interventions and psychosocial influences on illness and …show more content…
During my last semester as an undergraduate student, I took an introductory public health course and I became very fascinated with everything I learned. With regards to public health activities, I did a legislative presentation for Practicum, a class BSMD students take at NEOMED. For the presentation, we had to find a solution to given health problems such as STIs or dental health disparities. During that class, I was able to delve into the process of creating a solution and implementing methods to the problem, which is similar to my area of interest in public health. I also was a patient navigator at the NEOMED SOAR Student-Run Free clinic where I checked in and escorted the patients to the lab, filled out forms, and also helped run the clinic that day. This helped me learn about the need for such clinics in areas with low socioeconomic status. I also realized how unaware people are about the need for proper healthcare, which is why I want to focus on outreach during this
Public health deals with the public, community, and society as a whole. It promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play. I believe that the many leadership, teamwork, communication and community skills I have gained through NHS and FBLA, will allow me to excel in the Public Health Field. Which will, in turn, allow me to be the best I can be, enabling me to be a great positive force in my community.
While interacting with current medical students pursuing the MD/MPH dual degree at a UTHSCSA student panel, I realized that obtaining an MPH would align greatly with my interests and career goals, allowing me to expand the scope of my medical education and enhance my critical thinking skills. I enjoy how public health combines various aspects needed to treat disease and improve health outcomes, and I know that integrating the MPH core concepts with my medical degree, will help me to become a well-rounded and better physician who approaches healthcare through both an individual and population-based perspective. An education in public health will provide me with various opportunities ranging from the creation and development of community health projects, to contributing to the modification of current health policies. I will seize the opportunity to work with professionals from all occupations including educators, clinicians, executives, and I will become an advocate and a credible voice for positive change through a better understanding of the healthcare system that is in place
This will always be my strength, my true comparative advantage. Moreover, with my experience and education, I feel that I can become a successful public health professional through the Doctorate of Public Health Program at the University of South Florida. Over the course of my professional and educational career I have been fortunate enough to acquire a wealth of experiences that have led me to pursue an advanced degree in Public Health. My interdisciplinary training in planning and public health at Florida State University as well as my professional experience with the Florida Department of Health make me an excellent candidate for The University of South Florida’s Doctorate of Public Health Program.
The Public Health Associate Program would help me fulfill these goals by providing a unique on-the-job experience and competency development so that I could successfully fill a role in public health, management or community development in the future. In reviewing the program’s curriculum domains and competencies,
My unwavering interest in infectious diseases began in middle school when I read the book, The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston that intricately describes the Ebola virus. While the description of how the virus destroys the human body are unpleasant, this virus fascinated me. Consequently, in my spare time I read about other infectious diseases, such as cholera and tuberculosis, on Wikipedia and other web pages for my personal enjoyment. Years later, I participated in Princeton Model Congress in high school where I first learned about public health. Participants made mock congressional bills to be passed in a congress comprised of high school and college students in order to implement a national change. My mock bill advocated for the incorporation of HIV tests within annual physicals. The purpose of this bill was to ensure that more people became knowledgeable about their status and with this knowledge, HIV positive individuals can receive care faster and take proactive measures to prevent infecting others with this virus. As I researched various facts about the HIV epidemic and how HIV impacts communities in Washington, D.C., my interest in public health evolved even though I did not know of the official name, public health. At the time, I wanted to be a lawyer and averted from anything science or math related. Yet, I cared about my community and I wanted to make a difference. I rediscovered my interest in public health in college as a biology major.
I have been given many opportunities to help others and make an impact in Johnson City through organizations like the Family Medicine Interest Group at ETSU, serving as the coordinator for student involvement in free clinics. I have also been able to make an impact through medicine in Cleveland, TN by way of the Good Samaritan Clinic. This is a free clinic in downtown Cleveland that I have been volunteering at for the past seven years. I have also been directly involved in the start-up of the Just Care clinic in Mountain City, TN, a medical student ran free clinic in rural Appalachia. I was also been able to spend time in rural Guatemala with a medical team from my undergraduate university helping diagnose, treat, and care for patients whom receive little to no regular healthcare. From my own first hand experiences in both Guatemala and my time spent in the Just Care and Good Samaritan Clinics, I have seen the impact that an inadequate health care system can have on a population. I hope to use my medical and public health training in areas that do not have adequate access to health
We as a class were given a variety of health subjects to choose from to undertake a research project that counted as a huge part of our grades. I picked the study of epidemiology to be the area I would focus on extensively for the next three months of that semester. This obviously meant that I had to read and learn a couple of books to get a clear idea of how I was going to present my idea and findings. As I read through some of these books, I really became intrigued. The aspects of global health issues, biostatistics and health policies to name a few really jolted me into considering this area of study as a potential future career choice, as oppose as to just a research project. I was really fascinated as I read and came across the range of issues that public health officials such as epidemiologists had to solve or were in the process of solving in inventive ways. I obtained a crucial but very methodical understanding of the very issues that is being faced in the world of health care today. Ever since this class came and went, I have been highly focused on public health issues through other classes and
I have been interested in medicine ever since I was young, when my mother caught studying her medical almanac with a flashlight, under the covers, every night during second grade. However, I was only seven, so studying was the child’s equivalent of looking at “pretty pictures” of coronary artery bypass grafts and intricate diagrams of alveoli. I became intrigued with human anatomy and how each body part works in harmony. Through my activities, I discovered a hands on approach to body functions. From kicking soccer balls to breaking boards with my feet and exhaling to play the flute, I have observed the body’s ability to perform and nothing takes my breath away like anatomy can. During my high school years, I observed a close family friend during his surgeries.
Public Health is an interesting topic. Many people may not understand the purpose of Public health, it is a fairly new field although it has been around since the 1800’s. Before being introduced to the the field, I was clueless and never knew such a subject existed. Going into college with dubious decisions on my major within the pre-med program I knew I wanted to help people and the society, but was unsure what to major in.
This journal entry will provide an overview of my personal goals and vision as it relates to becoming a professional in public health. Give a brief synopsis of how the media interviews given by the faculty and health professionals impacted my view of public health. The understanding I wish to garner through this class and the entire Master of Public Health (MPH) program entirely. Finally, discuss the professional contributions I aspire to make in public health.
I was drawn to the idea of not only focusing on one-on-one patient care that doctors provide, but also solving problems that affect the health of entire populations. The study of disease and health within populations; for instance, preventing disease, promoting health, and reducing health problems between groups are the main reasons I want to pursue an M.P.H focusing on epidemiology. These are my strongest interests because I believe they are important in improving our world’s health.
The Public Health studies major offers a curriculum that includes coursework in ethics, the natural sciences, policy, economics, and environmental issues, among other areas. As an undergraduate program, students focus on:
My interest for public health stems from the need to aid numerous people in disease and injury prevention, health protection, and strategies for health promotion. I hope to earn a Master of Public Health with a focus in the area of health care management as well as hospital administration in relation to public health policy development and education. I aspire to develop enhanced intervention policies that can provide the population with direct access to primary health care due to public health preparedness education and strategic planning.
After finishing my Undergraduate, I have seen it wise to purse masters in public health, an area that I have much interest in. Having pursed a Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences, minor in psychology, expanding my knowledge in the field of public health has been my next option. The vast knowledge that I have gained learning and working can help me while pursuing this program. Given the chance I would be able to fulfill my career goals.
I have earned a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration in a school of public health which has equipped me with the knowledge of major health factors including the most important which are the determinants of health such as social factors. My degree has allowed me the capability of analyzing all health and safety hazards for people to live in a safe, healthy environment. Poor health outcomes are a result of interactions between individuals and their social and physical environment when exposure to crime, violence, and social disorder are high. By knowing this and other risk factors, I am have the skills to deal with the demands of protective services and the benefits that come with this work environment. Such job related skills including,
