This journal entry will provide an overview of my personal goals and vision as it relates to becoming a professional in public health. Give a brief synopsis of how the media interviews given by the faculty and health professionals impacted my view of public health. The understanding I wish to garner through this class and the entire Master of Public Health (MPH) program entirely. Finally, discuss the professional contributions I aspire to make in public health. One of the first things that stuck in my mind in viewing the media interviews was the collaborative nature of public health. This took me on a reflective journey of my days on the police department. The culture of policing for years had been that of professionals who
The American Public Health Association (APHA) is made up of 31 basic sections which represent key public health disciplines. Through these sections, members with mutual interests are able to combine efforts and develop scientific program content as well as policy papers in their areas of practice or areas where they are interested. In addition, these basic sections provide for social and professional networking, mentoring and career development. The sections are APHA’s key professional units and they help in promoting the mission and fulfilling the Association’s goals. Through these sections, a variety of opportunities for the involvement of the members, thus making a richer experience for the professionals who decide on interacting with the Association’s primary sections. For second part of reading response, I choose to report on Promoting public understanding of public health article by our professor Stephen Bezruchka. I really enjoyed reading the article he wrote about how people in the America are being less healthy than those people in other rich nations. Promoting public awareness about this topic should be high priority for all Public Health majors. Health is the most important part of human life and it surprising to me that people in America are not really doing anything to change it. Solving this problem need individual supports and public supports.
The purpose of this journal is to provide a daily record of personal experience. The name of the facility visited was North West hospital. It is a private hospital with 254 beds. This hospital is based on Friesen concepts which functions differently from the traditional hospital in that it creates an environment conducive to direct patient care through smaller 20-bed units; private patient rooms; elimination of nursing stations; and the placement of supplies, medications and charts in close proximity to patients. There are different departments in this facility. One of these departments, where Occupational therapy and certified Occupational Therapy Assistant work is rehabilitation. This Rehabilitation is provided on the Sub acute Care Unit
My unwavering interest in infectious diseases began in middle school when I read the book, The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston that intricately describes the Ebola virus. While the description of how the virus destroys the human body are unpleasant, this virus fascinated me. Consequently, in my spare time I read about other infectious diseases, such as cholera and tuberculosis, on Wikipedia and other web pages for my personal enjoyment. Years later, I participated in Princeton Model Congress in high school where I first learned about public health. Participants made mock congressional bills to be passed in a congress comprised of high school and college students in order to implement a national change. My mock bill advocated for the incorporation of HIV tests within annual physicals. The purpose of this bill was to ensure that more people became knowledgeable about their status and with this knowledge, HIV positive individuals can receive care faster and take proactive measures to prevent infecting others with this virus. As I researched various facts about the HIV epidemic and how HIV impacts communities in Washington, D.C., my interest in public health evolved even though I did not know of the official name, public health. At the time, I wanted to be a lawyer and averted from anything science or math related. Yet, I cared about my community and I wanted to make a difference. I rediscovered my interest in public health in college as a biology major.
I was drawn to the idea of not only focusing on one-on-one patient care that doctors provide, but also solving problems that affect the health of entire populations. The study of disease and health within populations; for instance, preventing disease, promoting health, and reducing health problems between groups are the main reasons I want to pursue an M.P.H focusing on epidemiology. These are my strongest interests because I believe they are important in improving our world’s health.
There are many reasons why the police have a difficult time interacting with the communities they are supposed to protect and serve. These issues did not occur overnight however the string of police involved shootings throughout the United States seems to wedge a bigger gap between the pubic and the police, along with poor communication skills and lack of positive engagement with the community. Police officers deal with many types of people from different cultures and age groups and should be able to adapt no matter where they are. When these officers take an interest in the communities they patrol, there is generally a sense of peace, when officers don’t care and aren’t in sync with the residents residing in the communities the disengagement is apparent. By finding ways to improve the relationship and actually applying them, there may be a chance to bring a positive light back the police-community relationship.
The healthcare sector offers a variety of professional opportunities that include pediatric, geriatrics, public policy and many other areas in which I hope to make a impact towards. I have always been intrigued by medicine and continue to gain more interest in public health. In the future, I desire to combine both medicine and public health by participating in an MD and MPH program. My experiences and education provide me with constant motivation in achieving my goals.

The public health practitioner that I interviewed is Mr. Raed Mansour. Mr. Mansour is the Executive Assistant to the Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health. Mr. Mansour is also the Chicago Department of Public Health Innovation Projects Lead. The interview took place at CDPH, DePaul Center, 333 S. State Street, Suite 200, Chicago, IL 60604, on Thursday Sep 24, 2015 3pm – 6pm (CDT). Initially, Mr. Mansour scheduled an hour of time for this interview, however, as our rich discussion evolved, Mr. Mansour re-scheduled his remaining tasks for the remainder of the work day. This allowed for me to gain even more insight into his work and working in public health.
In approaching my junior year at UC San Diego as a Public Health major, keeping an eye open for, and pursuing any avenues of interest in this field is of great importance to me. As I have learned in the past couple years at UCSD, the field of Public Health is vastly expanding and I recognize that the opportunity to participate in a research project associated with my area of study will broaden my understanding and give me “real world” experience. My attention was drawn to your research project not only because of my major, but also the subject matter.
My undergraduate degree in community health education was only the first step of many that would shape my growing interest and aptitude in the realm of public health. I gravitated towards coursework dealing with sensitive and highly stigmatized health subjects and populations, and was especially fascinated by the ……. During this time, I also
Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious diseases(What is Public Health? ,n.d.). Overall, public health is concerned with protecting the health of entire populations. These populations can be as small as a local neighborhood, or as big as an entire country or region of the world. Public health professionals try to prevent problems from happening or recurring through implementing educational programs, recommending policies, administering services and conducting research – in contrast to clinical professionals like doctors and nurses, who focus primarily on treating individuals after they become sick or injured. Public health also works to limit health disparities. A large part of public health is promoting healthcare equity, quality and accessibility. Medical Ethics is the principles of proper professional conduct concerning the rights and duties of the physician, patients, and fellow practitioners, as well as the physician's actions in the care of patients and in relations with
After finishing my Undergraduate, I have seen it wise to purse masters in public health, an area that I have much interest in. Having pursed a Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences, minor in psychology, expanding my knowledge in the field of public health has been my next option. The vast knowledge that I have gained learning and working can help me while pursuing this program. Given the chance I would be able to fulfill my career goals.
In my opinion, the public health professionals should be viewed as agents that propagate changes in their communities, undoubtedly, the history of the American Public Health Care System coupled with the world health Organization’s history of the public health depicts the dedication of many public health professionals to the health of their communities. These professionals have gone above and beyond their call of duties to assure their communities and other communities around them enjoy a better health. Certainly, without the public health professionals’ collaboration with the other stakeholders in their communities to championing their communities’ health needs, majority of the community health projects enacted in most would have failed. Great examples are successful health programs such as the one that eradication of smallpox, and polio in America. Also, worth noting are the current fights against adult and childhood obesity, heart diseases, HIV/AIDS to name a few (Turnock, 2016; Mooney, 2005).
