I have earned a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration in a school of public health which has equipped me with the knowledge of major health factors including the most important which are the determinants of health such as social factors. This experience allowed me to view life in a healthcare perspective in a poorer country. I was able to compare living standards of U.S. Citizens to those who live in poverty stricken areas of Brazil. I gained new strengths by adapting to an unfamiliar environment and culture differences. Studying abroad gave me the ability to learn quickly to take initiative in handling difficult situations and handle the stress of being in a new environment. I developed an open-mindedness through experience in different ways of living. I am now able to manage achieving goals despite obstacles of intercultural competency barriers by using self-knowledge, self-reliance, and perseverance. I can integrated strategic thinking skills while functioning with a high level of ambiguity. Also, I am able to articulate key public health concepts, including: the demographic and epidemiological transitions, different disease burdens, risk factors, and critical issues in the delivery of health services. All in all, these skills will allow me to be a competitive employee for protective services. I am capable of handling with all of the high demands that this job …show more content…
It was during that time that I gained experience in working with elderly and disabled. It was a rewarding experience and during my time there was when I knew that having a career where I can help those who are unable to care for themselves was the career for me. By donating just a few hours out of the day to assist those in a nursing home had such a huge effect on the residents who lived there. Taking the time to listen, understand, and relate to those people meant the world to them. Not only was I able to developing relationships with people from a different background and generation from me; but, I was able made lasting impressions on those people and was able to help improve their lives. I learned that it's important to take time and understand those who live in facilities because they have been taken out of environments that they're used to but they have also lost some of their freedom because they are no longer able to completely take care of themselves. Therefore, I’ve learned it's important to take up time with those people who no longer have the same freedom they once had. It may take some longer than others to adjust to their new conditions. By spending time with residents in long term care facilities, I've learned that by me being younger, it makes them feel better to share some of their life experiences. I know that consistency is important for
In addition to scholastic achievement, well rounded physicians have plenty of life experiences. They have fought through tragedies, yet find reasons to smile. They demonstrate success and leadership in spite of past failures. Their story may not be glamorous, but they consistently overcome obstacles that would stifle others. Their drive and determination defines who they are. The physician that emphasizes the well being of others over personal gain, that is the physician I plan to be. My path towards becoming a physician has been difficult in order to shape me into a more complete person. These past experiences allow me to sympathize, empathize, and more supportive of patients in the primary care setting. I feel the need to use my personal
The invaluable skills that I have gained and learned through my after school clubs, Future Business Leaders of America, (FBLA) and National Honor Society( NHS), has stirred up a desire in me to help my community and to make a difference in the lives of people, by majoring in the Public Health field. Through Public Health, I will help those in my community at large to live healthy lives; mentally, socially, physically and culturally. Healthcare is an essential need in life and is a great field that would allow me to make a difference.
This competency was put into action by completing two assignments that were related to determining the essential public health services. The first assignment was watching a video about gun violence in Chicago and determining how many of the essential public health services were being met at the time. In this particular video I was able to identify four essential public health services that were covered. The first services I identified was “mobilize community partnerships to identify and solve health problems (Turnock, 2011 p. 226) which in the video was being represented by the Chicago’s trauma united and Northwestern Hospital’s new rule that when a patient comes in who has been shot they call the community based violence advocates to help with the victim (Brackett, 2013). The next service I identified was “inform, educate, and empower people about health issues” (Turnock, 2011 p. 226) which was being met by the Harper High School’s Becoming A Man (BAM) program that teaches high risk students about how they can control their dangerous behaviors and actions to help them prevent gun violence (Brackett, 2013). The next service I found in the video was “research for new insights and innovative solutions to health problems” (Turnock, 2011 p. 226) which was being addressed by President Obama’s
Since the health care industry is constantly growing and changing, the skills I develop must be able to adapt accordingly. To ensure that my skills can adapt appropriately, I can receive training in the field and learn the new skills needed along with studying new material. I can advance in my field by taking new courses to continue to grow and develop new skills that will be necessary. The courses can revolve around administration, management, leadership, and other topics that will be beneficial. Since the Internet contains everything about changes I can look up on the new skills and find new ways to adapt by doing research online. The skills are necessary to ensure that patients and residents are treated properly and the quality care continues to improve.
I am drawn to family medicine by this same appreciation for humanism that is evident to me among practitioners in this field. I am similarly motivated and excited by the intellectual challenges, scope, and meaningfulness offered by a career in family medicine. I strive to join a residency program that will provide rigorous clinical training among a diverse patient population while offering extensive resident responsibility for patient care. I believe that a family medicine residency program will inspire me to excel and arm me with the tools I need to achieve my future goals. Upon completion of residency, I aim to devote myself to serving the underserved while dedicating time to conducting research and participating in community and medical
Ever since I was a freshman in high school i always wanted to persue a career in the medical field.

For instance, spending time volunteering at the local food bank, the community health auxiliary, and the local Sikh Society chapter in my community. This interaction allowed me get a better understanding of those economically marginalized. Further, I was able to get a grasp of some of inequalities and disadvantages in our community in the aspect of health care and the importance of what change needed to occur those less privileged. These experiences inspired me to undertake more global pursuits as an international humanitarian volunteer in orphanages and community schools in
One of the most appealing aspects of becoming a public health professional is the wide range of careers available to choose from. My career goals coincide with the range of opportunities; however, ultimately I want to work with an organization similar to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. I want to focus on the social and medical aspects of disease, and examine the disproportionate rates of disease and disability among minorities. I also want to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS that is rapidly destroying so many countries. My passion to help others around me has sparked a desire to work with clinics around the world in order to promote change in the treatment and prevention of devastating diseases like HIV/AIDS.
Personal health and wellness are important factors towards life because without health, our quality of life would suffer greatly. There are many factors that contribute to health and wellness; some can be managed, but many are out of our control. Below are four main topic that caught my attention throughout the course.
Some of the skills that I have mastered in the last 5 years working as a healthcare administrator
I am passionate about this major since the work conducted by this group allows for substantial government and societal changes to occur. However, there is a high need for public health workers in the neighboring islands. Therefore, my career goal is to improve the health of neighboring islands by advocating for environmental, individual, and societal changes that motivate healthy lifestyles in low-income communities. Additionally, I hope to improve their health literacy through awareness and prevention interventions focused on non-communicable
The competency of knowledge of the healthcare environment is composed of four general themes. These themes include customers, staff, systems and community/environment. Of these four domains I believe I have a lot of room to grow in the community/environment. There are many steps I can take increase my knowledge in this area.
My interest for public health stems from the need to aid numerous people in disease and injury prevention, health protection, and strategies for health promotion. I hope to earn a Master of Public Health with a focus in the area of health care management as well as hospital administration in relation to public health policy development and education. I aspire to develop enhanced intervention policies that can provide the population with direct access to primary health care due to public health preparedness education and strategic planning.
As I write this, miles away from my homeland of Iraq, I think of the path that led me to Public Health. I often ponder when people talk of healthcare disparities, if they can ever truly grasp what it means, what crushing poverty entails, and even what an undeveloped nation looks like. I was born and raised in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, a place where a great many people are experiencing some illness, conditions that either obscure in the developed countries, or are profoundly preventable. I never wondered who would help, or raise awareness. I was that someone.
