There is a viral video of a woman going off on a man she saw using food stamps in Walmart. The woman and man were in line checking out their groceries. When the woman saw the man pull out a food stamp card, she went berserk. The man had his young son with him. The woman screamed at the man and told him that he was not providing for his son. She stated that the government was taking care of the man and his son. The man told the woman she is not providing anything for him or his son. The woman then pulled out her paycheck and showed it to him. The man responded by saying that if she has a problem with someone using food stamps, then she should vote republican or complain about it to her local senator. The man then told the woman that he did
This article provides the argument that the Governor of Louisiana, Governor Jindhal, plans to charge the recipients of food stamp benefits in his county with fraud is justified if they abused the system during a mechanical shut down. Apparently when the food stamp system shut down, it no longer recognized the available balance on benefit cards. As a result, active participants were not only allowed to use their cards for an unrestricted amount well beyond their available limit, but those who were no longer active participants were allowed to use their cards for an unrestricted amount as well.
Firstly from my prior knowledge I know that Food Stamps are a system of aid used in the United States of America for families that require benefits as a method of surviving hard times. From the cashier’s reaction in the story of “she sneers as Manna pays her with many coloured food stamps”, I am able
A documentary by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush, known as A Place at the Table, talks about food insecurity in America. The documentary starts off by showing different people in America not knowing when their next meal is. This theme continues by showing the story of Barbie Izquierdo, a single mother who has trouble feeding her children and barely survives on food stamps. The documentary shows Barbie taking part of a program called witness to hunger raising awareness for food insecurity in America. Barbie manages to get a job working to help people qualify for food stamps. Sadly Barbie no longer qualifies for food stamps and can barely afford to feed her children on her current paycheck.
The argument was formulated from two stories in the documentary that are very eye opening. The first story is of Barbie, an unemployed single mother from Philadelphia, who struggles to feed both of her children on food stamps. Often times Barbie would skip meals to make sure her children have enough to eat. Unfortunately, she would occasionally have to send her children to bed on an empty stomach simply because she ran out of food stamps. The second story that supports the argument is that of Tremonica. She is a 2nd grader from Mississippi whose health is put at risk because of the amount of processed food she consumes because it’s cheaper than fruits and vegetables. Although it may not appear like Tremonica
The federal food stamp program (SNAP), makes up the largest portion of the budget for the US Department of Agriculture.1 In New York alone 15.3% of residents receive benefits from the SNAP program.2 The purpose of SNAP is to provide nutrition to low-income citizens, however SNAP beneficiaries experience higher rates of obesity compared non-reciepiants.3 According to a report published by the USDA, Americans use food stamps to buy more than $600 million worth of “sweetened beverages,” and bought hundreds of millions more of junk food and sugary snacks.4 Lack of regulation and reform to the SNAP program is causing harm to the public.
Since Ronald Regan’s presidency, funding for welfare programs has been cut significantly due to the government’s and public’s desire to reduce dependency on the federal government. According to Sharon Parrott, former Director of the Welfare Reform and Income Support Division, and Arloc Sherman, Senior Researcher at the Center Budget and Policy Priorities, in their article “TANF’s Results are More Mixed than is Often Understood”, The Food Stamp Program experienced $28 dollars in cuts (3). Also, the block grant given to states through TANF has not been adjusted to today’s economy. Therefore, it has lost 22% of its value due to inflation (Parrot and Sherman 7). This means that the money immigrants do receive is worth less than before due to the declining economy. Combined with the typical lower earnings of immigrants, this has led to the prevalence of a condition known as food insecurity where one’s access to food is limited by economic circumstances. Although these cuts to the welfare program are a major factor, they are not the sole cause of food insecurity; the reduction of cash aid also plays a vital role (Van Hook and Balistreri 2). These cuts to benefits have resulted in holes in the social safety net the PRWORA tried to create because immigrants’ cash aid can be

This writing will be about the usage of food stamps, or maybe I should say the abuse of food stamps. I see a lot of food stamp abuse in my work environment and i would like to find out how they really work and if the system is really abused. I intend to learn and research about the background of food stamps and how the system really got started along with its original intentions. I would also like to research people's personal encounters with them, may it be what they have seen or the stories of the people who actually have them, whether they abuse them or use them for their good.
The more widely recognized form of welfare abuse, practiced for decades, occurs when people sell food stamps for cash. In the eighties food stamps were in the form of coupons and assigned a monetary value. It was

The Fortune 500 Company chosen for this paper is the Lockheed Martin Corporation. Lockheed Martin is a global securities and information technology company headquartered in Bethesda, MD. Lockheed Martin employs roughly 126,000 people in several facilities throughout the world. The company's main business is in research, design, development, manufacturing, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. Lockheed consists of four operating units, or business areas, which consist of Aeronautics, Electronic Systems, Information Systems and Global Solutions, and Space Systems (LMC, 2011).
“Lana M. and her husband collected welfare benefits in 2003, claiming they earned less than $24,000. But authorities say Lana M., the former office manager of a job-training center for immigrant welfare recipients, also owned a liquor store and recycling business. Authorities say, she drove a $76,000 luxury car, shopped at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue and had $147,980 stashed in her bedroom dresser” (“Welfare” 7). This case for instance, how did this couple’s income go undetected by the system? How did their greed get away with thousands of dollars they obviously did not need? Not only did they cheat and scam the welfare system and tax payers, but they took away the assistance from a family or individual that where truly seeking aid. While reading through some articles when researching information on this matter I learned that it is not easy to apply for Welfare Programs. Applicants are required to provide important documentations such as “Source of income, proof of identity, social security cards, proof of residence cost, copy of mortgage payments, pay stubs and applicants are even required to provide saving and checking accounts information and cash on hand” (“Tips” 7). With all these information in our government’s hand, fraud should be the last thing on peoples’ mind. Tax payers should rest assured that the money they have worked so extremely hard
When people are referring the “welfare”, they are referring to a number of government assistant programs that are provided to help struggling Americans with poverty (Johnson). One common myth that is actually very prominent today is that illegal immigrant come over from other countries and are treated better than United States citizens such as easily receiving government assistance (Johnson). This is not true and there is no way it could be true because even United States citizens have to prove their identity. Our speaker today, Monica Drake said that the only way any illegal immigrant can get any type of assistance is if they have a child but still then their child is the one benefitting from the Medicaid and it is only for a short 48 hours. The next myth that really caught my eye was the one that people are only using government assistance to upkeep their drug habits. Tennessee has recently started drug testing their applicants and found out that less than 1% of the applicants are using the system for drug habits (Johnson). I will have to admit that I too had this stereotype in my head at one time. This statistic really stuck out to me because it is such as small number of people abusing the system compared to the number that people THINK are abusing
I assume my vision for America would be similar to any other high school senior or person my age. A place where everyone is equal; for the generations to precede us not to be suffocated by debt as our generation is; to be able to trust the politicians we elect to work for the peoples of America, and not solely in their own interest; those are just some of the ideals I see for a more perfect America. Some might say that those ideas are or would be a utopian idea, but they shouldn’t be seen as that because those are common ideals and what America should strive for to become better.
A fatal microbial disease, commonly known as Meningococcal meningitis, can be scientifically referred to as any illness caused by the infectious Neisseria meningitidis bacteria. (SEE APPENDIX 3.0) The highest extended disease rate is located within the belt of sub-Saharan Africa, stretching within twenty-six countries from Senegal to Ethiopia. The infectious Meningococcal bacterium are transmitted through person to person contact; spread by exchanging respiratory and throat secretions, such as saliva or mucus, during intimate or neighbouring contact. These bacteria do not hold any animal reservoir and can only be transmitted from humans. Approximately one in ten people unknowingly have the bacteria living harmlessly and
