The striving for power is a human instinct in order to influence others and enhance authority. Golding’s novel “Lord of the Flies” explores the dynamics of attitudes when people control over others, as when Jack in authority, the greed and selfishness begin to grow. Nowadays, the similar events still happen, like Donald Trump uses his power to manipulate people for his own purpose. I would like to compare the similarities from the eyes of the public between the two events through drawing and folding. In the novel “Lord of the Flies”, Jack abuses power after he controls over others through hunting. First, Jack manipulates the boys for ensuring his dominance in the tribe. He amplifies the fear among the boys, and says, “The beast is a hunter”(Chapter …show more content…
First, Trump uses the same scare tactics as Jack uses. He suggested some foreign countries are threats to America as the BBC News reports that Trump has advocated travel ban policy and the idea of Mexico wall. He always emphasizes the threat from the non-white countries is for gaining supports from white supremacist and creating horror among the people. He manipulates people by spreading the panic that banning Muslims and Mexicans are for the American national security. Therefore, as long as people believe what Trump says, they feel Trump’s policies are useful and benefit all American. Indeed, people would believe Trump is a strong president and support him in order to let him protect the country. In addition, Trump also obsessed with restoring America's greatness. As the Time report, Trump reverses Clean Power Plan for restoring the economy and industries. In order to bring jobs back to America, he ignores all the scientific data that prove climate change is real and need to be dealt with. This order certainly helps the American economy and gets supports from some people. However, his over-confidence that he will make America great again blinds him. The fact that he is obsessed with gaining popularity results in missing the point. His executive order definitely will cause environment worse than before. Americans have to pay for the environmental rehabilitation when the environment turns into the worst point. Moreover, Trump neglects the entreaties from the people who need help. According to BBC news, Trump calls for the US to suspend resettling refugees from Muslim countries. He believes that the refugees present a serious threat to US national security base on few affair. This is not the case, most refugees only have a tiny demand which is a safe shelter and foods for surviving. But he bans all the refugees from Muslim countries for eliminating the potential threat. He abandons
Donald Trump is focused primarily on helping Americans; he wants to ensure that Americans have jobs, wages, and security. In order to do so, Trump developed a “10 Point Plan to Put America First.” Trump wants to cease the mass immigration of Mexicans to America in search for work opportunities. If elected president, Trump wants to build a wall on the southern border of the United States, which will keep Mexicans out. Trump wants to make certain that any illegal immigrant is imprisoned and deported immediately. Trump does not tolerate any illegal immigrants in the United States and wants to make sure Americans are “put first.”
(Jack, pg. 179) With this simple statement, we realize just how much Jack’s power is burgeoning. Simultaneously, Jack’s hunger for power takes control of him, turning him into a complete savage whose only concern is to run the tribe, which causes him to lose himself even further in the craze. He sets the example, or so the boys think, and forces them to believe him while they remain afraid of the beastie. “The chief saw the effect of his words and stood abruptly.”
SSG Bartlett hit the ground running upon arrival at 2d CR. He immediately found himself in a Squad Leader role due to his initiative and leadership ability. Right before deploying to Afghanistan he would be recognized for winning the June 2013 NCO of the Month Board for 4th Squadron. The following month he deployed as a Dismounted Squad Leader to Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. Within the first two months he would earn a Combat Action Badge and a Purple Heart resulting from a complex attack that turned into a mass casualty situation on Highway 4 South of Kandahar City. SSG Bartlett was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for his actions treating and evacuating casualties that day. Following this incident, he was selected by his Platoon Leadership
Jack’s thirst for power for the sake of dominance develops a sense of dictatorship. When killing the sow, the shift in Jack is clear. Jack no longer looks to control nor shield himself from savagery; instead, he embraces it: “His mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long satisfying drink” (Golding 70). The sense of power Jack receives from his kill is enough to completely take over his actions. Power is a drug to Jack, and he has become addicted. This addiction continues to affect his life, and more importantly, the lives of those he has surrounded himself with. Dropped “He [Jack] began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling” (Godling 64). Golding uses juxtaposition and zoomorphism to inhibit this effect. Jack shifts from dancing to snarling in a matter of seconds, showing his vulnerability to the evil which has taken root in his heart. Jack is no longer human; he is a savage. It is known that money changes people. However, this is not true. With money comes power; power changes people. Jack has lost all control and power over his own life. So, he looks for control and power in the lives of others.
This shows that Jack knows the power he is currently holding and controlling. He used that power to control and demand anything he wanted. Like Hitler, Jack knew what he wanted and that was being in control of everyone. Jack also said, “Who’ll join my tribe and have fun?” (p. 150).
Throughout history, humans have relentlessly fought for control over others. This desire for power is well depicted in a novel by William Golding, Lord of the Flies. The story revolves around a group of boys stranded on an island. Two of the main characters, Ralph and Jack, both want to be the leader of the boys, and their struggle for power clearly demonstrates the human desire for control.
William Golding’s Lord of the Flies presents a story of a group of boys who become stranded on an island together, and in their struggle to survive; some begin to fight for power. Having power makes them feel in control of their situation; however, this power struggle quickly begins to consume them. Golding uses the power struggle between Ralph and Jack, the two main characters, to illustrate the power struggle between good and evil.
Donald Trump is charming, well spoken, and adept at captivating the hearts and pockets of Americans all across the country. The philosophies of racism and a communist market that he perpetuates outline a much brighter future with markedly less freedom and increased levels of prejudice and xenophobia.
Donald Trump is running for president. He is laying down a lot of proposals. One of the biggest proposal is trying to ban Muslims from entering the United States, when he becomes president. Donald Trump addressed these issues saying that he is trying to protect the US and the people away from danger. This is important issue because it is unconstitutional.
Donald Trumps believes in protecting and preserving the great american lifestyle for those who respect it enough to earn it. Without a doubt america is one of the greatest countries, probably the greatest nation ever know to mankind. why is it so great? It allows the hardworking and diligent to turn a penny into a dime. Whereas that wouldn't be possible anywhere else, this greatness
America has been a proud nation and has always allowed immigrants from all over the world to come in. President Donald Trump has been working on trying to keep America safe, so he is trying to send away potential terrorist immigrants, such as Syrian Refugees, because he believes that this will stop all terrorist attacks on America. Trump signed three executive orders during the week of January 23, which threatened the rights of the immigrants and refugees that would want to go to America. There are 51 Muslim-majority countries and territories and Trump placed travel limits on seven of them (Murdock, 1). There has been a concern for stricter border laws. There are 205 million people affected by this and 1 billion people not affected by this
For our new president, Donald trump it has already been a rough start in office and its only been a couple of weeks. There is not a lot of people that approve of how he’s handling is job already. The biggest action citizens disapprove of is the travel restrictions and most people say it is an attempt to ban Muslims from entering the US. Another action that is highly disapproved is “The Wall” which will be between the US and Mexico. The citizens of the US are very divided on whether this will make the US a safer place and protects us from terrorism. Most voters think President Trump’s executive order on immigration is better described as a restriction on terrorist than as a Muslim ban.
From the very beginning of his campaign trail, Donald Trump piqued America’s interest with his blunt and oftentimes shocking statements. With his candidacy came exclamations of making America great, building walls, deporting illegal immigrants, and keeping jobs in the United States. A Google search
Since the original publishing of Brave New World, the book has stirred up a brew of controversy. It has received many reviews both positive and negative. In this paper I will provide examples of both and look at the reasons behind them.
In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, power is a notable theme that can be found very frequently throughout the novel. In the book, the theme of power is found in the form of items that revolve around the protagonist of the story, Ralph, and the antagonist, Jack (Burns 1). Ralph and Jack use these items in order to establish power in the group of boys for their own reasons (Burns 2). With Ralph, he uses items, which represent order in the story, to establish a democracy on the island, while Jack uses specific items that represent evil to create a monarchy out of Ralph’s democracy (Burns 1). The items used by Ralph and Jack in Golding’s novel will be later explained in the essay on how they represent power, what their meaning is, and their purpose in the story.
