Pinker vs. Wolfe
According to Steven Pinker “Anyone who doesn’t believe in evolution is certainly not going to believe in the evolution of the mind, and anyone who believes in an immaterial soul is certainly not going to believe that thought and feeling consist of information processing in the tissues of the brain” (pg. 128-130). On the other hand, Tom Wolfe insists that the mind is a ghost in a machine. Determination of how the mind came to be helps to discount the views of Pinker and see that the views of Wolfe are more realistic in conjunction with human actions.
To illustrate, the theory of evolution by natural selection is the process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioral traits. One might think that this is not a necessity in the development of the mind, but in life knowledge is power. Instilling respect for oneself and others helps to control aggression. The ability of humans to control aggression helps to deter violent acts towards other humans and animals. Although all religions do not express the exact beliefs that will result in great virtues, it is usually the lack of a religious experience that leads humans to indulge in behaviors that are not moral. True there is evil in the world despite efforts to promote religious morals and respect. For example, the Holocaust was a horrific event that was a result of extreme hatred toward a specific population of people that were viewed as a problem to society. The failed efforts to deport the Jews out of Germany eventually led to murder of approximately 6 million Jews.
