Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scout organization in 1912 on the ideal of empowering women starting at a young age. Low became inspired of establishing this organization after she met the founder Boy Scouts Sir Robert Baden-Powell (Patterson 2017). She wanted females to have the same empowerment that learned after the death of her husband. She felt that girls just like boys could learn character building, values and practical skills in life to help them as adults. From that, Low built her foundation to teach young girls empowerment by teaching them to engage in camping and other sports. This built self-a-steam for young girls to lead a fulfilling life. Over the years, the Girl Scout organization has grown and has become a national organization. They still build characters with learning values, leadership skills, and practical skills to lead to empowerment, but they also address issues in the communities. Girl Scouts train girls who will become the future leaders in society. The organization address issues such as racial equality, environmental, and social problems. They encourage peers positively in issues such as drugs, body image and emotionally healthy lives through physical activity and higher education. Girls Scout also proactive with social issues gay, lesbian and transgender community they …show more content…
For instance adult volunteers who are troop leader’s uses positive role model to influence the young girls in scouting activities to engage, challenging, and to have fun. The activities are trips, exploring science, outdoor activities and community service projects and earning badges. They also promote federal programs by having public policy and advocacy office that works across the nation with Congress and Executive Branch to educate and bring awareness about these issues that are important to girls and young women (Girl Scouts,
"I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight" (Juliette). This was how the unexpected founder, Juliette Low started the girl scouts. Juliette was born Juliette Gordon Low on October 31, 1860 in Savannah, Georgia. She was the second of six children and never had any children of her own however, she had no problem working with children and helping them. She was deaf in both ears and had several other misfortunes in her life, however, instead of feeling guilt-ridden for herself, she went and created one of the leading scouts in the world today (Juliette). By opening up new opportunities for young girls, Juliette Low interchanged the values of her time and the way people
While each Girl Scout does not keep the income from her sales troop members see the direct benefits of their efforts these kinds of strategies help reinforce the broader purpose of the cookie program such as teaching girls valuable lessons in marketing and career training. The Girl Scouts specify five essential life skills that the cookie program focuses on developing goal setting, decision making, money, management, people skills, and business ethics. As Councils are shifting their focuses onto better business approaches and skill development, many are hosting sales training seminars.
Girl Scout troop 1511 has transformed sufficiently deeper than Monday meetings, camping trips, and a time to see my friends. I joined 12 years ago, unaware of the importance it would it on me. It has become the most consistent and valuable organization I’ve been a part of throughout my life. Girl Scouts has presented me with opportunities that I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish single handedly. It’s led me to become a recipient of the Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Award. Along with having the opportunity to reach out to my community through service projects and gain numerous life skills that I’m able to use on an everyday basis.
If the book had taken place in today’s times as opposed to the 1930’s scouts life would be different. First of all, throughout the book she struggles with being a lady or being “Lady-like”. “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches” (Lee, Page 108). She is told to act like a lady would and wear dresses even though she does not want to. If this were now, she would have less pressure to wear dresses and act ladylike. Nowadays young girls wear dresses less often and there is less of a “Girls have to wear dresses” stereotype.

The Royal Canadian Air Cadets is an example of a community activity that I have actively taken many leadership roles in. Having served the Royal Canadian Air Cadets for more than four years with the 540 Golden Hawks Squadron, I partake in various activities. I have also learned numerous invaluable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence, all of which are not spoon-fed to us, but rather acquired from the experiences that I have been through with cadets. We are constantly coached and supervised by Officers who encourage us to lead others. As we age and climb up the ranks, we are encountered with many leadership opportunities that we are strongly encouraged to take.
Being a Girl Scout from kindergarten until the end of middle school has taught me various life skills. Firstly, it has taught me the importance of teamwork. Through various projects and activities, my troop and I have worked together in achieving any goals set by our leaders and other members of our community. This experience has also taught me life skills that can help me as an individual, such as first aid and how to deal with children. My mother was a troop leader for girls in grades third through fifth, excluding me from the eighth grade, and I acted somewhat as a co-leader for my mum when the actual co-leader was unavailable. I set up crafts and helped the younger girls with badges that I had already gotten in the
Gender roles are another cause of social divisions and inequality the Harper Lee teaches about. Scout defies gender roles and she is looked down upon by many of the women in her community for doing so. Scout’s Aunt Alexandra is one woman who looks down upon scout for this. “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn’t supposed to be doing things that required pants,” (108). Aunt Alexandra believes ladies are not permitted to be taking place in activities that require pants. She disapproves of how Scout likes to participate in activities she sees as unladylike. This shows the inequality in this society due to gender roles. Another woman who challenges Scouts appearance as a lady is her neighbor Miss Stephanie. When Aunt Alexandra has a
The Boy Scouts of America and the Girls Scouts of the USA are both nonprofit organizations that can be the most wonderful experiences in one’s life. Being a Boy Scout or Girl Scout can help the youth develop maturity and character, as they grow with age and enter adulthood. Through the process of volunteering and showing leadership skills, Boy Scouts of America and Girls Scouts of the USA are both life-changing organizations. One involved in any of the two organizations will create unity throughout their community and uphold a legacy. While the youth involved in one of the two organizations earn achievements and countless awards, scouting can be utilized to create an exceptional college admission resume. Although the Girls Scouts of the
From my perspective, service learning is an educational approach that combines community service, personal experience, and learning to meet societal needs. Gender equality is the state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender. It is an issue that is really important to me and that I would be willing to offer my services to see a change. People of my age and financial status could work with different organizations that promote opportunities for young women, which will impact the world in a positive way. In completing this activity, I would be the most nervous about trying to get my message across in an effective way to men, women, and children. I want people to know how important it is to treat girls respectively because without them, we wouldn’t have the society that we have today. I think I can learn about the kind of projects that different organizations are doing for young girls to make them feel good about themselves.
In the words of the famed civil rights leader Mahatma Gandhi, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Those who spend their time making a difference in the lives of people around them tend to know exactly what their calling in life is. Gandhi wrote the truth, and it is not difficult to see in everyday life. Giving back to others is a common theme among scouting organizations, educators, and even books and movies, displaying exactly how much a person can find themselves in the service of others. Two of the most well known organizations for giving back to others is Girl and Boy scouts. Scouts are famous for doing helpful things for other people. The Gold Award and Eagle Award, respectively the highest awards in girl and boy scouting, are centered around
To start off, girls got placed into countries and were to act like a young citizen of this country. Each student had a chance to put their opinions forward as well as learn about foreign government systems and how different countries operate. As well as being in countries, students were also put into working groups and focused on a particular global issue to then present and pitch a solution of this issue to the country embassies. Either accepting or denying the solutions to the working group. Throughout the week, girls also got to showcase
The Girl Scouts started in 1912 with only a small number of girls. Juliette Low, the founder, was inspired to create the Girl Scouts after she went to a party in 1912. At this party, she met Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, and wanted to create a similar program of the opposite gender. In present time, there are now millions of participating girls in this organization. Starting at the age of 5, a girl can enlist to become a Girl Scout and partake in the activities that range from hiking to camping to selling cookies. The starting rank is Daisy which is grades Kindergarten to first grade. The top and final rank is Ambassador which is grades eleven to twelve. This program is a success because it has created women of high status after they left, does not discriminate against others when recruiting, but it has also lost the initial perspective from when it was originally created.
females aren't "supposed" to do hands-on jobs. Even back then, Scout is well aware of what she is expected to, although never following the rules. The book clearly recognizes the gender stereotypes of the time. Scout doesn't approve of the female and lady-like ways she has to act and dress. When she says to her aunt that she can't do nothing in a dress, she replies that Scout shouldn't be doing things that require pants. Scout consistently defines the expectations of girls by being a complete tomboy, wearing pants and playing with boys. She looks up to her older brother and follows in his footsteps, striving to be like him and not her aunt.
There is so much talk about league of German girls . Think of it like a female version of the Hitler youth, but not as strict. It’s made and directed for girls. Every girl at school is talking about it. According to the group, girls finally get to be leaders . It does not appear as if there is anything bad that we would be doing in these groups. Others girls who are members say that the program is for our own good, for us to lead healthy lives and to even prepare for our careers, they even want us to just be happy girls . Well, apparently that is. But the agenda for it is just so demanding! so many excursions to attend, of these camping trips, hikes . Now the program is not compulsory, yet there is still this expectation
