Being a Girl Scout from kindergarten until the end of middle school has taught me various life skills. Firstly, it has taught me the importance of teamwork. Through various projects and activities, my troop and I have worked together in achieving any goals set by our leaders and other members of our community. This experience has also taught me life skills that can help me as an individual, such as first aid and how to deal with children. My mother was a troop leader for girls in grades third through fifth, excluding me from the eighth grade, and I acted somewhat as a co-leader for my mum when the actual co-leader was unavailable. I set up crafts and helped the younger girls with badges that I had already gotten in the
Leadership As the esteemed writer John Updike once said “A leader is one who out of madness or goodness volunteers to take upon himself the woe of the people”. Many great pieces of literature illustrate the numerous qualifying factors of effective and inspiring leadership. Some examples can be found in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and Doug Stanton’s
As said by Robert Kiyosaki, “Don’t let the fear of losing be greater than the excitement of winning.” Many characters in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird are faced with losing battles, but many of them do not let their slim, or even non-existent chances of succeeding stand in their way of trying their best. Even though the battles fought are very different, they all share a connection to the novel’s theme of courage, which Atticus describes as “When you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyways and you see it through no matter what” (149). Some of these battles include the trial of Tom Robinson, Mrs. Dubose’s morphine addiction, and Arthur “Boo” Radley’s fight against his fear of the outside world.
Girl Scout troop 1511 has transformed sufficiently deeper than Monday meetings, camping trips, and a time to see my friends. I joined 12 years ago, unaware of the importance it would it on me. It has become the most consistent and valuable organization I’ve been a part of throughout my life. Girl Scouts has presented me with opportunities that I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish single handedly. It’s led me to become a recipient of the Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Award. Along with having the opportunity to reach out to my community through service projects and gain numerous life skills that I’m able to use on an everyday basis.
Friends are a more powerful influence on children than parents. Yes, parents teach their children many things and feed them every day, but friends are also a powerful influence on children. Throughout the novel, Scout and Jem were convinced to do some things by their friends. They learned many things along the way, too.
In literary texts, authors best evoke empathy in the audience by using appeals such as ethos, logos, and pathos. When a reader is given appeals they are able to better understand the world around them and how others outside of their own lives feel. Books and speeches such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Statement on the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. by Robert F. Kennedy are prime examples of authors evoking empathy from their readers.
On August 9, 2014,a young man by the name of Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer. It is little known why the shooting occurred, but the boy was unarmed. This could be one of many cases of modern day racism and segregation. In 1930, “even after the abolishment of slavery in 1865, blacks were still almost powerless(BBC 2)”.Blacks were heavily segregated and had almost no rights. Many cases of segregation in the 1930s caused a lot of current day racial tension in the united states.
Author uses Atticus teach these lessons through his wise words. Atticus teaches these lessons to not only the audience, but Jem and Scout too. Some of the main things he teaches his kids about are understanding people, using the mind instead of the body, the cruel reality of stereotypes, and true
In his article,“Herd” Mentality Explained, Rick Nauert Ph.D. talks about how we as humans tend to follow things even when people may never even realize it. This connects to how Lee uses the characters of Jem and Scout to show the struggle of choosing between following the herd or being an individual.
“It's right hard to say," she said. "Suppose you and Scout talked colored-folks' talk at home it'd be out of place, wouldn't it? Now what if I talked white-folks' talk at church, and with my neighbors? They'd think I was puttin' on airs to beat Moses, "But Cal, you know better," I said. “It's not necessary to tell all you know. It's not ladylike—in the second place, folks don't like to have somebody around knowing more than they do. It aggravates 'em. You're not gonna change
A man is not hired because of his religion; a woman paid less because of her gender and a gay man is treated differently than a straight man. Every day people are influenced by others. These influences change outcomes; ruin lives and affect others. Throughout the whole novel of To Kill A Mockingbird, people’s opinions were influenced by the disgusting rumors flowing through the little town of Maycomb. People like Jem, Mr. Cunningham and every man on that jury were influenced and these rumors mixed with unknowingness of all of them they convicted an innocent man, endangered a good man and harassed a shy one. If people including Jem, Mr. Cunningham and the jury fixed the blemish that society has endowed them with and developed a sense of individualism and rid of the fear of it, instead of following society, then many outcomes and beliefs would be different.
Mob mentality controls how the dark side of Maycomb works. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout the main character states,” ‘Atticus, you must be wrong….’ ‘How’s that?’ ‘Well most folks seem to think they’re right and you’re wrong….’ ” (Lee 139). Within To Kill A Mockingbird, characters are constantly influenced by the many without consulting logic or reason: by acting on their own areas of uncertainty, by allowing others to manipulate them, and submitting to the idea that the mob is right.
The criticism brought on by social roles negatively impacts one’s views on themselves and their actions. Maycomb’s strict social roles have lowered somes self esteem and has trapped people in a certain personality or financial stance. These social roles can get in a person’s head and change their views and actions in result. An example of this is shown at the school where Scout explains to Miss Caroline about the Ewells, ” He’s one of the Ewell’s...They come the first day every year and then they leave… You’re supposed to mark ‘em absent the rest of the year”(27). The Ewells have always left the first day of school because that’s who they are and who they will always be, but how are the children supposed to better themselves if this social role has been placed on them since birth. This normal behavior of the Ewells restricts the
Mockingbirds will only sing their hearts, not cause any damage or give their lives to pleasing others. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird great examples are shown of different types of mockingbirds. Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Arthur (Boo) Radley are great examples of representing a mockingbird.
Veering sharply to the right, a large flock of birds neatly avoids a high wall.
Throughout the course of your life, there are people who you look up to that teach you right from wrong, guide your beliefs, and open up your mind to what is important in life. In the novel “To kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, there are three individuals that contribute to the development of Jem and Scout’s morality and life values. Atticus, Boo Radley, and Aunt Alexandra, are three influential people in the novel that shape who Jem and Scout will become as adults. Atticus teaches Jem and Scout accepted behaviour in society. He taught Scout how to read and continued to do so, even though Miss Caroline claimed that if Atticus kept teaching Scout, it would interfere with her reading at school. Since Atticus continued to teach her, Miss Caroline got angry and told Scout that her father does not know how to teach
