There are two types of persuasive tactics that an individual could use to get other people to agree to their requests or favors. The first tactic that an individual could use is called "Foot in the Door" which occurs when an individual gets other people to agree to their small requests/favors which then leads to a greater possibility that those people will agree when they ask for a much bigger request/favor. In order words, if people accept the first small request, they are likely to say yes to the second request. The second request/favor is the true intention that the individual wants to get. The reason that people are more inclined to agree to both requests is due to them wanting to be a consistent and agreeable person.
Today, one can see the tactic of persuasion being used as a standard avenue to influence a person’s attitude or beliefs by presenting them with different messages that encourage things like using certain brand name products, vote a certain way, or where to take a vacation just to name a few. There are four types of people that include gullible people, skeptical people, firm believers, and people who are leaders who trust others as well as make others follow their ideas. Persuasion is a widespread topic of social psychology and may be done in different ways. There are two types of cognitive processes by which to persuade someone, which are the central route or the peripheral route. For this assignment I used mostly the central route approach as well as using a little of the peripheral route approach. In the book Just Mercy, written by Bryan Stevenson, named one of the best books of the year by multiple newspapers such as The New York Times, Stevenson talks about how the justice system affects those who are less fortunate and minorities. Bryan Stevenson is an attorney who, at the time, was pretty young. He founded the Equal Justice Initiative. This organization defends the poor, the wrongly condemned, and those trapped in the justice system. The biggest client and one of the first was Walter McMillan, sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit.
In the Unit three summative text, there are two articles, “Take a Book Wherever you go” by Joan Aiken, and “Benefits of Audiobooks” by Denise Johnson, that both use persuasive techniques. But, “Benefits of Audiobooks” by Denise Johnson is more persuasive. Johnson claims that audiobooks will have a positive impact on all kinds of students. Her use of evidence, bandwagon appeal, and reason and logic make it apparent that the reader should take her side. One persuasive strategy the author used was evidence.

Based on the readings from The Republic of Plato, the central tension within the book is identifying the ideal form of guiding individuals either through a persuasive or compulsive path of becoming complete guardians. Through persuasion, those qualified to rule, similar to Adeimantus and Glaucon, are more adequately educated to lead a city than through compulsion. Within this essay, the defining important principle of persuasion that will be explained are listening, exhortation and dialectic. By examining Platos understanding of the importance of persuasion in education, it can be determined that qualified individuals are more adequately educated through an emphasis of persuasion over compulsion.
In the Ted Talk “We should aim for perfection- and stop fearing failure”, Jon Bowers outlines his argument for perfection. He begins by giving an example of a “small error” that ended up costing Amazon over $160 million dollars. He then lists more examples draws them forward to present his idea of perfection. The examples show how one tiny error can have an enormous impact and he turns to the audience asking “why we cannot achieve perfection?”. He draws the listeners in by giving personal experience in striving for perfection. “Look, a hundred people die everyday due to vehicular crashes. Think about that for a second. That's like the equivalent of four commercial airliners crashing every week, yet we still can't convince ourselves to pay perfect attention behind the wheel. So I teach my drivers to value perfection”. Jon is an educator for professional delivery drivers and has to ensure that they are prepared to handle any and every situation possible.

Political parties consistently use deceit and manipulation as a way to sway voters away from their opponents and towards themselves. Our current Presidential Candidates are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Some may say we have to choose between the lesser of two evils. Granted, not everyone is enticed by these “promising” campaign ads, but most people buy into them.

The central route to persuasion requires high efforts of processing which occurs through a complex structure, thus leads to longer lasting effects of persuasion. However, if an audience is lacking in motivation, in which they are not analytical or involved with the message they are more likely to take the peripheral route to persuasion. In this case, peripheral cues are used in which these cues trigger an acceptance of the messages thus leading to persuasion, which is usually a temporary effect [Myers et al 2016 p190-191].
In writing it’s important to have an understanding of what you’re trying to convey for your audience in addition to how you you will present your ideas. Effective communication extends beyond having well organized writing expressed in complete and coherent sentences. The style, tone and clarity of writing must also be considered, as they are constantly changing relative to the audience. Again, analyzing one’s audience and purpose is essential to successful writing. Appropriately, when choosing the most effective language, it is important to consider the document objective as well as the reader.
