For the past several months, the news feeds have been full of stories on Obamacare, more accurately described as The Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act is the largest mandated healthcare change in the United States since Medicare and Medicaid began in 1965 (Mayer, 2013). It was signed into Law in 2010 designed to give all Americans access to healthcare. Whether you are for or against The Affordable Care Act one thing is above dispute, it has caused a Nationwide uproar. Now that we are in a new Presidential era, steps are being taken to “Repeal and Replace” Obamacare.

During a campaign speech in 1776, then candidate Ronald Reagan gave an image to the world, the “Welfare Queen.” A fictitious woman who ardently abused the welfare system and wasted taxpayer money. He used this image to begin his battle for dismantling the welfare system, and even after his death in 2004, this idea he put into the U.S. mindset still exists. That those on welfare abuse the system, are addicted to drugs, and don’t deserve the help given to them. As of 2015, 43.1 million people lived below the poverty line in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and in the U.S., terms like “poverty”, “welfare”, and “poor”, still seem to be pretty negatively charged.

Introduction Welfare in the United States began in the 1930’s during the great depression, in order to respond to the alarming number of families needing aid. Welfare gave money to the families or individuals with an income of little to nothing. When hearing about welfare, it sounds like a great idea, but with all great things comes people who take advantage of them.
