Is Electoral College Reasonable?
Does a United States citizen think that electoral college is democracy's safety net? The people of the U.S. have their own opinions about Electoral College. Some disagree on the topics that Electoral College discusses, and some agree. Most U.S. citizens should support the electoral college because it prevents majority rule, the US needs the electoral college more than ever before, and the intentions of the founding fathers held the abhorrence in the US.
First, The Electoral College prevents majority rule and should not be abolished. ”The Electoral College gives states with small populations a measure of protection against domination by states with large populations. It levels the political playing field a bit” (Williams, Walter E.). It is said that Hillary Clinton won popular vote majority. Therefore, if the nation were not encumbered with outdated electoral college. Clinton, instead of our present one, would be the next president of the United States. In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote just as Clinton supposedly did. Such outcomes have led to calls to desert the Constitution's Article two provisions for the state electors to select presidents. Before the U.S. deserts the Electoral College, let's consider the purpose it performs. According to 2013 Census Data, Nine states- California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, and Michigan have populations
The Electoral College should not be abolished because most voters actually still are not informed today. How would you feel if a crazy president was decided because of all those uninformed voters who vote for the wrong person? Just imagine what could happen to yourself and the rest of America! The Electoral College also should not be abolished because it helps preserve our federalist government. It is proven that the Electoral College helps preserve our federalist government because it lets some of the smaller states count in elections too. The states can now actually make a difference in the outcome of the election. People do say that Electoral
One reason the Electoral College should not be abolished is that it was originally part of the framers plan for America. We know this, because a few years after the constitution was founded, the Constitutional Convention came together to decide a leader, as it was obvious that one was necessary. They also knew that the leader must be chosen in an informed fashion that would equally represent everyone. In the end, the electoral system was chosen because it was an indirect way of choosing the president and Vice President and in the end, "The delegates settled on a system involving an Electoral College." (BGE). These examples shows that the Electoral College should be kept in modern day government because it was chosen by the people who founded
To begin with the electoral college should be abolished because it is undemocratic. In the chart by George C. Edwards the comparison of population and electoral votes with other states do not add up correctly.(Doc D). This shows how the electoral college is unfair because not all of the states are represented equally. The data shows how the candidates that won the popular
The majority of Americans believe the Electoral College should be gotten rid of altogether. Liz Carbone, a political science major has done research on business and government, and also on the Electoral College says, the main controversy
I agree with Hayes, the electoral college is outdated. There is no longer a necessary role for it in the American Electoral System. The Electoral College was created since the government felt that the people would not know about the issues that they were voting on. Instead, they decided that the people would vote for a select group of candidates. The group of people that are being voted for are the caucus. The caucus member that wins their district casts their districts vote in favor of the candidate that won the majority vote .
Electoral College Should we abolish or keep the electoral college? The electoral college is the finale of voting to choose presidency. The popular vote helps decide how many electors in each state can vote. Once the votes in each state are counted for, the candidate who won the majority of votes for that particular state, gets to choose which group of electors are allowed to actually vote for president. Disregarding the population, each state is given a minimum of three electoral votes.
One of the reason why the Electoral College should not be destroyed, is that it helps the candidates who may struggle with the popular vote. In 1980, for Presidential Election, candidate Ronald Reagan barely won the popular vote (50.7%). With the help of the Electoral Vote, Reagan took 91% of it, which then made him the winner (Doc B). Also in 1992, Candidate Bill Clinton, did not even have half the country on his side (43%). With the help of the Electoral Vote, Clinton
The value of the electoral college has been up for debate during the past few elections. When a candidate wins the popular vote but loses the electoral vote, it sparks a thought that the college might not be the most ideal setup for modern times. The argument against continuing the electoral college is that a democracy is based on the will of the people and whoever the people choose is who should win. This, however, was not the case recently. In the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by over a million votes, but lost the electoral college. The founding fathers put the system in place before there were 50 states and over 300 million people in America. The electoral college is outdated and a misrepresentation of the public's opinions and thus should be amended in the Constitution.
We can trace back the Electoral College to the 18th century when the United States was first founded by our Founding Fathers, when after our independence, we created a democracy that will give equal opportunities for the people and not give too much power to one person; therefore the Electoral College holds a great importance in our country’s political history. Located in Article II, Section 1, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution, this document states, “The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves…The Person having the greatest Number of Votes shall be the President…” Despite the importance of this process, many start to debate whether we should abolish the Electoral College or keep it. Some claim that, this process takes away the choice of an individual that votes for its candidate. While others claim that the Electoral College gives a fair chance to the voters that live in smaller states with less population. In order to make a clear decision. To make a clear judgment, one needs to go back and inform themselves on what is an Electoral College, understand why our Founding Fathers created this political role, know of their advantages and disadvantages as well to analyses wheatear this process is still necessary now in days.
Today, there is a much greater amount of people and technology in the country than there was in the 1700’s. As America changed and grew throughout the years, the people have adapted to the new demands of life. For example, when the men went off to fight in World War I, it created a need for women to enter the workforce, and women have not left since. The same adaptation is needed in the presidential election because having an electoral college gives too much power to a lesser amount of people, with the increase in technology, we must adapt to new ways of voting, and the House of Representatives should not have the last word on who becomes president.
The Fathers had established a solution between the debate of a election of the President by popular vote of citizens and the election of the President by a vote in Congress and; in the Constitution. The Electoral College includes of 538 electors. In order to win you need to have at least 270 votes. The people of each state vote for their candidate, and the electors vote on the candidate and give all the votes to the candidate who won the popular vote. In my opinion the Electoral College process is not an efficient way, and it needs to be revised. Technology has changed and every vote can be counted buy computers, since Founding Fathers tried to make it easier for them to count the votes, since they traveled by horse. Since candidates only focus on winning over states that have the most electors. The Electoral College doesn't go with the will of the people.
The electoral college should not be abolished due to the findings of expert researchers. If the election for president was based on the popular vote, smaller states would it be as significant as the government wants them to be because there would not be even representation. Tara Ross states that, “Small states would likely never receive as much attention as their larger neighbors. The goal is not to eliminate this disparity, but to minimize its severity. Under t5he electoral college system, the states are as evenly represented as possible, given that they are not all the same size,” (Ross). The United States of America government was founded upon federalism, ideological differences, and democracy. The electoral college is the only system that
The Electoral College is an outmoded system which denies the American people the right to elect their president democratically and should be abolished and
Do you believe the electoral college is the ideal method to vote for the next president of the united states? I do not agree with this method of choosing the president and I think the popular vote should be the method of voting instead. In the Electoral College you vote for someone to vote the president for you which defeats the purpose of voting. Especially since that person legally doesn't have to vote for who you want. Also the electoral college makes voting more complicated which differs from the popular vote method which is easier by just counting votes and the winner would be who has the most votes. My last reason for abolishing the Electoral College and using the popular vote method is it would help other parties instead of just the Republican and Democratic parties. As third party candidates never won due to the electoral college being more helpful to the other parties. The electoral college is a complicated and not fair way of voting for the president. The process defeats the purpose of voting and most of the time helps only two parties which give the other parties a very low chance of winning.
When the Electoral College was put in place as part of the voting process it seemed a good idea. “Our framers distrusted democracy and saw the Electoral College as a deliberative body able to correct bad choices made by the people.” (Anderson 519). Times have changed and today’s society is a lot different that it was when George Washington was President. It’s about time that the U.S eliminates the Electoral College and makes America more of a democracy by making the popular vote the deciding factor in electing the president.
