Many high school students identify themselves as either the nerd, the jock, or the rebel, while some students did not embrace their label, I did. I accepted my label as the so called “jock” for one main reason, leadership. Being the captain of the football team as well as the baseball team put a target on my head as someone to follow, look up to, and guide others in times of hardships and adversity. Being a leader on a sports team meant that I had to be physically and mentally strong in situations where others might be weak. Physically, I had to be an example on my team by never quitting and never giving up when things were tough. That way when my teammates seen me pushing through physically adverse situations they have someone to follow
Leader – the main job of a leader in sports is to help the team organise properly, motivate others, and work as a team. By doing all these things your team can make a big impact when playing. The leader should communicate and organise well in order to help his players understand. The equipment should be organised properly during every training session which helps players improve. Any equipment that is broken which could injure the players should not be there.
Leadership is one of the biggest and most important characteristics a person can have in life. Some people believe that leadership is what deciphers a child from being an adult. I believe some people are born with leadership and some people observe and breath in the leadership qualities of mentors and become better people. Also, to be successful you either have to be very lucky or have a pure internal beliefs about yourself and only positive outlooks in life. John Wooden is who i have selected to try and form my leadership characteristics around. He is a well spoken and the most "sought out to be" coach in all of basketball. He had many victories on the court but he also formed his players into men with his wisdom.
From a very young age, I have loved being involved in sport and fitness. My earliest memories all involve me running around with a ball or a bat of some kind either in my hand or at my feet. My love for physical activity has remained and since then, I have becoming increasingly interested in coaching and the more theoretical side of sport. This has inspired me to pursue a career in physical education and coaching.
To begin, I exhibit qualities of a great leader. Firstly, at my Saturday morning bowling league, I am positioned as the anchor, which means I am expected to lead my team to victory.. Secondly, I lead by being a good example to my peers, and I am a positive role model. Lastly, when my friends have problems they come to me and I lead them to a positive solution. This is being a good leader.
To some people, leadership means to lead a group of people but in cheerleading, and to me, it is so much more. In the community, on the sidelines, and even in school, you are representing the team and the school you cheer for along with your reputation. You have to work the hardest, encourage your team, always keep the smile going and stay positive. Even at or not at practice or a sporting event you have to think of the team and how your actions will rely on the team and affect the team, everyone relies on the leader.
A leader is someone who is able to get people to work together and contribute to the overall goal. My sophomore year I was appointed as the captain of the Junior Varsity wrestling team. During my time, I lead my team during warm-ups and helped develop some of
Stereotypes are different thoughts that a variation of people hold about people who are different from them. A stereotype can be associated with a single word or slogan; such as nerd, or jock. Stereotypes can be expressed in either a negative or positive way. Most people apply stereotypes in a negative way to make them feel more superior over others. The category that most people would place me under would be the classification of an athlete or jock. The jock title that I have been placed under has been with me pretty much my entire life. I have played sports since I was four years old when I first started playing soccer and tee ball. From that moment on I
One of my goals is to be a leader in a business organization. Being the captain of the swim team sets a concrete foundation of what being a leader is like in a business organization. As the captain I have to make sure everyone is accounted for, keep morale high, talk about issues about an individual on the swim team, and fix said problem. This shows responsibility, character, and sympathy. These are core values that all leaders must have to be successful. Without them, they will
Sports make people come close together like family,” because of the opportunity to train, try, win, or lose together.”( The Mental Benefits of Sports, Kathryn Watson, para. 8) Winning and losing as a team is very important to learn how to do. Everyone has to work as a group in something of their life and no one wants to work with a sore loser or winner. Leadership qualities can, “range from being a good character, to respecting others, to being task oriented can be accomplished in both team and individual sports,” because of that “team mindset” ability.(What Do Youth Sports Teach Our Children Really? Suzanne Pish, Michigan State University, para. 6) The “team mindset” is a key thing to strengthen leadership qualities. Leaders are what makes up teams or groups of people or student athletes. Something to improve leadership is, “encouraging and inspiring team members to attain their own personal goals and reach their potential can help you become a better leader.”(Goals to Increase Leadership Skills for Personal Development, Laura Jerpi, para.5) Also, students that are more task oriented or who have better interpersonal skills tend to be healthier than an average human being. Leadership is an significant title to be able to claim. Having the title can get people a long way in
I started out as a student-athlete in which I depicted great leadership skills and positive role model qualities such as diligence, enthusiasm, and passion for the sport. Hence, after my first year of college, I was named the team captain. I worked closely with the coaches, helped to resolve team conflicts, established the tone for practice, and modeled responsibility, decision-making, and a strong work ethic. I also promoted a positive attitude and team interactions, and encouraged and supported all of my teammates. Throughout my experience as team captain, I showed mental toughness by remaining confident and focus, and respond to individual and team mistakes in an appropriate manner.
Leadership means different things to different people. To us it is not about managing or directing people. It is about the ability to inspire and influence others towards the leader’s goal and vision. A leader in sports has the same characteristics as a leader who works in an office. Besides being knowledgeable in their respective sport, team leaders have to possess effective relationship skills. A sport leader leads by example and must hold and exhibit the same traits and behaviours they expect from their team members. Nobody did that as well as the world famous Mr. Wayne Gretzky. Wayne Gretzky is a former National League Hockey (NHL) all-star and International hockey star. Many say he is the best hockey player of all time. He was the
At Glidden-Ralston the elementary kids look up to the high school kids. I have good leadership skills by being a good role model for the elementary kids. I also have shown leadership by doing sports. For swim team, I have been an assistant coach since I turned 15. At practice, I help the head coach teach the little kids what to do. I have to show the younger kids what do to, and teach them how to do things right.
Being a leader is being a role model and striving to make a positive impact on those around you. In order to be a successful leader, you have to put yourself second and your peers first. For example, my younger sister and I both play softball. I have played on several travel teams during the summer and this year, she tried out for her first competitive travel team. I was asked to aid her by helping her with the mechanics of the game. During this time, I sacrificed my time to put the needs of another person before my own and it paid off, because she made the team and I got to witness the results of my
Leadership is very important to me. I am the captain of my school's cross-country team, and was the recipient of the leadership award. My coach gave me this position based on my leadership qualities. When my team is going through a rough practice, it is my job to push them forward and help them find their motivation. I have earned my teams respect, leading by example, which is crucial to being a good leader.
Captains of sports teams are given the stereotype that they are the most athletic player on the team, scoring the most goals and handling the ball best. In truth, captains have a lot of work they have to do that doesn't even involve playing the sport. Captains are the most looked at player of the game; other players, younger kids and coaches look to them to set examples. They have to set examples in every aspect of the game; athleticism might be part of their job but it is not limited to it. The captain of any sports team must set the leadership standard for commitment, confidence, intelligence, and attitude.
