Personal Statement: A Career As A Nurse

In Four years my goal is to be finished with nursing school, and be a registered nurse (RN). I would have started my first nursing job, and become every good at fulfilling the needs of every patient.

Virginia Henderson tells what she thinks a nurse is about in her book The Nature of Nursing. “… helping of the patient to do those things leading toward health or a piece of that which he ordinarily would do for himself if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge, and to help him in such a way that he is able to do for himself as soon as possible” (Fredrickson, 2). Nurses have many different responsibilities but one of their main responsibilities is to provide care for patients in the best way possible. Nurses must be ready at anytime to be able to take care of someone in need (Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow). They have to be able to remain calm, even in tense situations, and also need to be able to come up with solutions fast and correct (Nursing School Programs). Nurses take direction from doctors who are working on the same patients as them. Nurses do many different things for a patient. They bandage wounds, retrieve information on the patient, and give the patient medicine that the doctor has prescribed. The place a nurse works in is usually fast-paced and a little overwhelming. A type of nurse that seems like it would be exciting would be an emergency nurse. An emergency nurse can work in ambulances, helicopters emergency room, and sports arenas. When it comes to all the different kinds of nursing there is most likely a nursing that could fit anyone’s personality (Discover Nursing).

Nursing is categorized under the healthcare department and it is an act of providing care to the sick or infirm. There are various sectors in the healthcare system and the sector I would wish to work is the pediatric unit in a public organization after my graduation in Bachelor of Nursing. In order to become a pediatric nurse, I would first have to work as a registered nurse for a year to gain some experience. As a pediatric nurse you should typically give restorative care to youth from the time they are conceived until their high school years. As far as that is concerned one must be very patient, caring, creative, cheerful and have genuine love for children. This unit is not only about profession but also the way how a nurse should have a firm understanding of the common medical issues that can be faced. Not only the loving nature of a person but also the communication skills are essential. One must be able to adequately communicate with the little patients as well as their folks. The career will also include addressing the worries of the parents and children, suggesting parents on different types of problems their children may be facing, and training them the most proficient method to take medications.

I think nursing can mean many different things to different people, as well as look a little different to each individual nurse. However, I think that nursing is caring for people by helping them during a time that they might not have the ability to help themselves. I think that nursing is ever changing because the profession adapts to what the newest research is proving and providing. Nurses are caretakers and advocates for their patients’ and their health. The way that one nurse advocates for their patients can look different from another nurse depending on the area of nursing they are working in. The nursing profession covers a wide variety of

Some long term goals I have for myself is to achieve my Master's Degree in Nursing. In the mean time I want to work as a nurse and use my skills and learn as much as I can on the job and to gain experience in the nursing world

Nursing isn’t just fluffing pillows and waiting on the doctor’s orders. A nurse does almost the same exact thing as a physician and then some. This job is not only treating a patient when they are ill but a nurse may have to give a patient advice and emotional support when the patient needs it. They help doctors with diagnosing patients and provide follow up care when required.

A nurse is a health care professional who cares for ill or disabled individuals, their families and communities ensuring that they attain, maintain or recover optimum health and functioning (Crosta, 2013). There are several kinds of nurses classified depending on their education and experiences. As an example,

At first, my career goals was to become a nurse, after I started working as CNA at a local hospital in Tallahassee.

From the beginning of elementary school through all of high school, students such as myself have been asked about our goals and aspirations in life, including our dream job when we grow up. I remember feeling really confused when someone would ask me these types of questions when I was really young because I never had a dream job that I would definitely pursue in the future. Now that I am older, I have found different categories of life and school that I find particularly interesting. I want to become nurse because I find the job appealing, I am willing to spend college learning about the practice, and I am good at science and communication.

My grandmother thought I was only able to work in a hospital environment when I graduate with my BSN degree. I informed her about how nurses may work in physicians’ offices, nursing and residential care facilities, home health care services, and in government positions. Secondly, not all nurses treat patients. Some may manage a facility and oversee the nursing staff, while others may work in a customer service role at a healthcare corporation. Other nurses may enter the teaching realm of the profession.

Nursing is a profession that you have to be dedicated to in order for you and recovering patients to have positive outcomes. Some very important concepts regarding nursing involve, critical thinking, professional values, therapeutic techniques/therapeutic relationships, patient-centered care, evidence-based practice and ethics. Nursing first started with Florence Nightingale. Nightingale was a bedside nurse who cared for hurt soldiers. She showed true values of a caring nurse, but nursing has definitely evolved as time has gone on. She pledged to nursing. She said “I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession,

The strengths I have: being efficient and organize. I have to have everything a particular manner before I write, perform, or do almost any jobs. Occasionally this can cost me lots of time. The weaknesses that I have are a perfectionist and impatient at times. I was used to working at a substantially faster rate than those around me. Sharing information and interacting with others is when I learn best. Understanding my weaknesses assists me to plan methods to conquer them when I am doing tasks and socializing with others. I must be kinder to myself and less strict about matters being merely so. I also need to be more delicate and comprehensible of others who tend not to take up my perfectionist styles. I also should be patient with people who take longer time to work. Since I have got a tendency to delay works when I do not feel like doing anything, I, therefore, need to create a regular schedule with integrated rewards and times for learning and acquiring assignments done.

My three to five year goals include attending Robert Morris University (RMU) for my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, working with the Nurses without Borders program, being published in a mainstream nursing journal and becoming a Certified Nephrology Nurse. I have specific plans in place to achieve these goals as well as a strong support system to ensure success so I can maintain my responsibilities as a wife, mother and an employee as well.
