Personal Statement: A Career As A Pediatric Nurse

Nursing is the profession or practice of providing care for the sick while relieving signs and symptoms that come with various illnesses. Nurses focus on the care of the “holistic individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life” (2). Life experiences have a major impact on nurses and the way they work. The person we bring to nursing is as important as what we do. As a young adult, I always enjoyed playing with infants and toddlers. My first job, as a teenager, was a teacher’s assistant at a preschool. I loved playing with children and conversing with their parents about their child’s progression. When I started taking college courses, I first majored in education because I thought I wanted to become a teacher. Education classes were not challenging enough for me and I quickly got bored with the subject. Then, I started volunteering at Rush in the pediatrics department and I fell in love with the idea of helping sick children in their time of need. I enjoyed my science and psychology classes so I decided I could mix science and my love for children by being a pediatric nurse. My grandmother thought I was only able to work in a hospital environment when I graduate with my BSN degree. I informed her about how nurses may work in physicians’ offices, nursing and residential care facilities, home health care services, and in government positions. Secondly, not all nurses treat patients. Some may manage a facility and oversee the nursing staff, while others may work in a customer service role at a healthcare corporation.
