Personal Reflection

When I determined that I was going to attend CSU I knew that it would be so much different than what I was accustomed to. After I made that decision I cried myself to sleep for about a week and a half because I was scared to move. On 08/20/2017 at 1002 hours FTO Wheeler #4361 and I responded to St. Luke’s Hospital emergency room entrance, on 3555 Cesar Chavez St., regarding a women in a hospital gown trying to break the caller’s vehicle window with a brick. Officer Wheeler and I were in full police uniform driving a marked patrol unit when we responded.

Fear and anxiety plagued my mind during this transition, however my wife and daughter kept my mind at ease. The information and instruction that was provided from the Professors at Durham Tech galvanized something deep within me. I began to strive for goals that I thought were unattainable as a naïve adolescent. The three basic areas of successful AT transitions (skills for independence, self-determination, and planning transition services related to a coordinated set of activities) can be applied to any student to uses AT. How might these ideas be applied differently for students who are moving to postsecondary educational environments than for students who will transition to group homes and/or supported employment after they leave high school?

Patton, Renn, Guido, and Quaye (2016) define Schlossberg’s Transition theory as “transition being any event, or non-event, which results in changed relationships routines assumptions and roles…of which self-perception assist in identifying the transition occurring” (37). Components of Schlossberg (2016) Transition theory include the meaning the transition has for the individual based on type, context and impact, followed by: “the transition process, coping with transitions, situations occurring, self-perception, support networks, and the various strategies which include managing stress in after math” (40). Starting college in August of 2008 was completely different than what I was expecting. My parents loaded up my car and sent me on my way to gain a college degree and experience life on my own, but looking back over the situation, I tend to ask myself numerous times do I think I was ready for college and the responsibilities that were to come along with it. Each time the answer was no. Being the first person in my family to go off to college away from home, I had no idea what to expect, or how to handle the things that come along with college life. Needless to say, it took me several major changes and me leaving my first university and transferring to one at home for me to get a handle of the situation.

Throughout my four years here at Blackfoot high school, I’ve changed a lot. I went through many different phases from my freshman to my senior year. My freshman year I remember thinking “I don’t need college,” “College isn’t for me,” “I’m not going to college,” Boy, was I wrong.

Trying new things and discovering who you are in life is an amazing experience, but it can be daunting at times. One big stepping stone in my life was transitioning from high school to college. I had a lot of assumptions about college that turned out false, while I also learned new things about college.

Before my experience in my College Readiness Program, I pictured going into college a completely different way. I now feel prepared and excited to move into a dorm and be a responsible young adult.

The transition from high school to college is a dynamic time in one’s life that parallels the change from childhood to adulthood. Both of these changes are dramatic and, as a result, feelings are difficult to put down into words. A messy combination of emotions fills the heart, surfacing in strange ways. Confident high school seniors go right back to the bottom of the chain when entering college as freshmen. These students start all over, just like entering grade school or high school for the first time. The move up from high school to college signals the switch from dependence to self-sufficiency. From a personal point of view, going through the experience of graduating high school and transferring to a residential college campus at STLCOP, made me realize I was no longer a kid and capable of making my own decisions.

Transitioning from high school to college will not be an easy task. From the start, we were told that we shape and mold our identities from a young age, but that it's easier said than done. Moving from one country to another, was a great big deal for me. My family and I knew education was important, but were offered little opportunities so my mom had to make many sacrifices in order for me to achieve my goal of a long and successful career.

After examining the student’s responses to the surveys it became evident which turning points were the most important, the first being the transition into college. Some students cite feeling lost and wanting to return home to their parents immediately, while others recognized a trend in less frequent communication with their parents (C1, A21). Many students mark a sense of anxiety because they are unsure of when the next time they are going to see their parents, who they relied on heavily. This turning point is so important because it sets the student up to be more independent, sets the stage for the rest of the school year, as well as causes the following turning points.

A transition is a representation of a process or period of change from one state or condition to a different one.
