My story would begin in fifth grade when I won the Central Ohio Writing Contest. My winning piece was about my grandfather, who lost a lot of his hearing at a young age. In 2011, he received a Cochlear Implant, an extraordinary hearing device that returned some of his lost hearing, changing his life.Prior to this contest, I never did much writing, but I began to love it. I loved how happy my piece made him; I loved telling his story. After winning this competition, my mom told me about journalism and I knew from that moment that I would set my goals to pursuing a career in it! As I fast-forward to 2016, I still have this dream. As a junior in high school, I write and report for my school newspaper. My goal is to tell stories: those that
My writing has improved greatly over the years. Now, I am able to write much longer papers, my writing is more detailed, my writing is straight, I am able to write in different styles, and my letters aren't shaped weirdly anymore. All and all, my writing has improved a good amount. I still do not enjoy writing that much. I am really enjoying math and science right now. The writing that I do like, is writing about a subject that I choose with no guidelines. My past writing pieces that I have done, have been the personal narrative (in 6th grade), and the researched based writing project (also in 6th grade). Both of those projects I did not enjoy that much, because we worked on those two projects for a long time. Even thought I do not enjoy writing
As a writer, I have improved tremendously. Over the course of the 2015 fall semester, English 015 has helped me grow as a writer in all ways possible. From hearing Dr. Duffy’s wise words regarding writing throughout class, to participating in peer review sessions, writing has become a skill that I have flourished in. As a child, I would constantly write stories and poems to express my feelings and emotions. Sadly enough, I can admit that as a lonely child, writing was my only companion and confidant. As an eight year old child, I found myself writing stories about the individuals in or around my life. After creating a satire about my mother’s workplace and the employee’s who worked there, I knew I had a gift regarding writing. I watched my
I teach fourth grade language arts where my main focus is to prepare my students to write a personal narrative for the Nebraska State Writing Test in January. Reading and writing are intertwined in my area of professional responsibility as I motivate my students to write a well-organized, creative personal narrative. As I have taught writing, I have found reading, writing, speaking, and listening go hand in hand when composing a personal narrative (Bruning, 2011, p. 299).
The final weeks of my first semester in college are coming to an end. My Columbus State english class has written a total of three projects, and a total of four papers. There are a lot of grammatical issues that, at the beginning of the year, I had issues on. However, I have improved on these errors drastically, and have become a better writer because of it. Even though I am still working on many aspects of my writing, I do believe that I have become a better writer. I believe that my biggest issues while writing are run on sentences, making a strong thesis statement, and having quotes stand alone at the beginning of a paragraph.
When I first started thinking about college schools I never thought about going to MSU or Ole Miss. I wanted to go to the bigger universities, but I knew I wouldn’t do well if I went there my first year. My high school did not prepare me enough for University, and I hadn’t decided on a major either. I choose East Central Community College (ECCC) as the school I would go to for many reasons, and when I got here I knew I made the right choice.
My experiences as a writer have been both very engrossing and strenuous. I have learned a great quantity on both reading and writing, though, I continue to struggle on things that I have learned by this time, making the same mistakes that I do not even realize. Sometimes things are not so easy to understand when reading information, especially if the wording of an article is difficult for example. I love the idea of learning new things everyday. These past years as a writer have been very interesting, and I have learned and grasped many concepts I have been taught along the way.
“ Hey mom, im heading out to the track” said Marcus Fisher, a sophomore at Starsman High school. He has always had an interest in track and field. He found out that his Freshman year he was a very good four-hundred runner. He had hoped someday he could be state champion for his 2a school district.
Al, Alde, de, shon, deshon, and Al’Deshon my name takes on many forms. Kind of like my writing in a sense. I have never been a strong writing also being the reason, I took this class first semester I think. If I get it out of the way maybe I’ll have an easier chance of reaching the finish line happening to be graduation.
Thinking about our first writing assignment, one of the suggestions focuses on the comparison of writing to running, it became apparent to me that this is something I would enjoy writing about. I am a long time running advocate, competing in marathons, and a neophyte writing student, and I find many similarities in both endeavors.
I learned a lot from this experience. I was familiar with all the kinds of writing, but I wasn't familiar with how to go about writing them. Through the assignments and tests I had to take, I know that it is important to know how to do different kinds of writing. As for grammar, I've become a lot careful with how I write. I've been checking every paragraph as write and this is something I'll continue to do. I've enjoyed writing since the eighth grade, but I've never felt like I've been improving. I've realized that I am much better than I thought I was. I'm glad I had this opportunity. I know it'll really help me in the long run.
While I've not be an academic tutor at SU, I was formerly an editor of the Austin-based music journal ATX On Record (now VinylList). As an editor, my duties included proofreading and editing article submissions, advising writers on how to strengthen their articles, and teaching them how to master the SEO.
I have a love-hate relationship with writing. I can write well according to some of my peers; though this could just be from the fact that I seem like the quiet, studious, type who has spent most of her time with the straight "A" nerds who went on to top tier schools such as Stanford. Sometimes I am not too sure of my own writing abilities. On most essays, I get a little bit above average grades and every once in a while I get a few more points than usual. I have noticed that my writing is better when I have to write about a topic I am passionate or know a lot about. The more I have to work with the better. Otherwise, my writing seems poor, forced, and somewhat bland. It usually follows a poor or basic thesis statement and lazy paragraphs. I believe motivation helps me to write better,
I have not taken the ACTs yet, but I plan to take it later this fall. Last spring I meant to take it but tended to postpone registering for the exam. I plan to take it on October 23rd this year. Even though I have not taken the ACTs yet, I have taken the SAT. Though I don't remember my exact score in the reading department, I remember it was mediocre. I hope that I can train myself in the english and writing department so I am able to score well on the ACTs.
A voice echoed through the rather large house, snapping me out of the trance like affect that the long editing sessions seem to have on me.
As a creative writer, I stand apart from the rest. When I was a child, I never found reading fun or an activity I would do on purpose. The thought of reading different combinations of phonetic symbols for hours on end didn’t sound like an ideal Saturday afternoon. I found excitement in creating stories and breathing life into characters, but not through the writing medium. As a child, like most writers, I wrote books. Except, I had an emphasis on the art quality rather than how words can manipulate a reader into feeling a specific sensation. When I reached middle school, I experienced a shift in my creative ideals. The words, along with the image, can be used to inflict a particular emotion. From now on, I prioritize the illustrations alongside the written word. Through my BFA in Creative Writing, I wish to learn how to manipulate words, with the combination of pictures, to express myself. By expressing myself,
