After filling out the Writing Skills Inventory, I noticed that I rarely created a plan to help me stay organized while writing. In this paper I will explain how and why I am going to improve my writing skills by planning my essays prior to starting it. Creating a plan could include a couple of things, it could help me create a process for completing the assignment or it could help the ideas within the assignment flow better and stay in order. I want to improve this skill because I often procrastinate on my tasks, so I do not have time to really construct solid ideas and take time to revise and edit as much I should. The reason that I do not plan out my assignments is that I think that it would be faster and easier to just write it all in
How can I become a better writer? Throughout my writing experiences, I have learned I have many weaknesses along with strengths. My experiences with writing has not always been the best, but over time, with lots of practice and instructions from my instructors, I can proudly say that I have gained a better understanding on the layout of essays and papers. As well as understanding how to write correctly my goal as a writer is to learn how to overcome my weaknesses and use my strengths to my highest ability. I have many strengths, weaknesses and goals that I plan to achieve and overcome in my college career.
My earliest experience with writing was my learning period that formed not only my style of writing but how I studied and the ability to apply words and concepts into a structured format. The process at first was difficult because it was my first time being exposed to structured writing which caused me to put it off until the last minute or lose interest in the topic I was writing about. The rowdy classroom was eager to release near the end of the day, but we knew we had to face one of the more uninteresting subjects of the day: middle school English. The teacher thoroughly explained our assignment which made each one of us cringe. The class finally initiated work mode and I was clueless. I would start to make progress but would be constantly
Seeing the dried up yellowed skeletons of the dead can entail many a story, from the skull of Phineas Gage with its life changing hole in it to seeing the battle hardened brittle bones of warriors of past worlds, but it is a depressing sight the see the pain in the physically deformed skeletons of those who only had the help of herbs and what would now be deemed the monstrous act of bloodletting, and other ill performed helps of our ancestors. This is exactly where my imagination ran as I gazed at the terrifying images of scoliosis. It was quite bizarre and frightening to think that I had this disease that could make what would make a twenty something year old mother of the past look like a hundred year old cripple. Not
In high school I challenged my writing skills by taking advanced placement language and literature. Both courses assigned essays that required scholarly text to support my points and ideas stated throughout the paper. My biggest takeaway from these classes was that having textual evidence from reliable sources will help strengthen my writing, also known as ethos to persuade the audience. During my junior year I grasped the concept of ethos, pathos, and logos, how each could be used to shape writing concepts or perspectives. Personally it takes me a little bit of time to adjust from different writing contexts that need to be addressed, but I always thoroughly analyze instructions to reach success. I improve as a student when I practice analyzing
I grew up in Panama City, a beautiful country located in Central America, like many other kids I learned how to read and write in home, and in the school at a very young age. However, I learned how to read and write in Spanish which is my native language. Books have been part of my life since I was a kid, I remember reading story books, comics, and classic stories with my parents almost every night after school. Both, my mother and my father would prefer reading a book than watching television, nonetheless, reading was a common thing to do in my home. Even though, I love reading, I have never been a good writer; writing have been the thing which I have struggled the most in Spanish and in English. I first started
I was very careless with my writing and I would write whatever comes to mind. I didn’t plan things out when I wrote, I still don’t. I just write whatever comes to mind. Planning has never been my thing with writing. In previous English classes they would have these charts for us to fill out, but I never could. I would just go write into my paper. I like being spontaneous when writing, it makes the papers more exciting. I could pull a paper out of thin air and finish in less than two hours. I would get great grades on these papers, but those teachers weren’t checking for grammar or correctness really, they were just happy you turned something in. When I did turned in my first college paper, it had red marks all over it. After that I have learned to take my time with writing. This didn’t necessarily mean I had to plan things out, I could still be spontaneous, but I just needed to look back over and check it before I turn it
I would share what I have learned with my boss, family member and friends by showing them how i have changed my way of writing and thinking before I start writing or speaking. I know that I talk a certain way but i will make sure that y writing skills are different. I would also share with my friends and family members the basis rules of writing that was shared with me. (Chambers 2016) Writing is an acquired art and that there are no run on sentences, punctuation and sentence fragments. (chambers 2016) I have not been a student with good writing skills in a long time. But I am learning to not write the way I speak. I will continued to improve my writing, speaking and thinking skills on a daily bases.
On the first day of class, having forgotten how to write over the blazing summer, I had high hopes I would gain some writing skill. Over the course of the last 10 weeks I learned not only that I am an extreme procrastinator, but that I had a lot to learn in the writing world. I learned many things about writing, including grammar, organization, and expression. Through late nights studying and practice in class, I can proudly say I'm a better writer than I was before.
I enrolled in this course because I wanted to strengthen my writing and editing skills which I will later be employing in the workplace once I have graduated from ASU. Technical editing is something that I have only limited experience with, and I hope to learn a great deal from this class. One thing I found interesting from the first three chapters of our textbook is the editor’s relationship with the audience who will eventually be reading the text. Normally one thinks that an editor’s primary relationship is with the writer of the written work rather than the audience. Now that I have read these chapters, I have a better understanding of the relationships that the editor has with both the writer and the audience. Another interesting thing
I've loved writing since I was a young child, especially creative writing. It allows me to express myself, and it seems almost magical to be able to create things simply by writing down a few symbols and twenty-six letters in various ways. I've written many fictional stories of various genres over the years. Unfortunately, while I have done a lot of creative writing, I haven't done as much academic writing. I would like this class to help me become the kind of student who earns A's on her papers by assisting me in becoming more efficient in the overall writing process.
This piece of writing is a narrative writing piece, my aim is to create an atmosphere of fear and create an experience of the operation. In the writing, I used first person pronouns to show that was a first hand experience. I used I, me, and myself in this writing. I also used sensory details as the smell of the material in the operating room - the smell of anti-infective was strong and strange for me. It helps to create an atmosphere and makes the writing more authentic. I used colour adjectives to help the reader visualize the scenes – pale and blue watch. Furthermore, I also used the sounds to make my writing lively and vivid – “Tik-tok, tik-tok, tik-tok”
The writing process feels different to me depending on the topic I am writing about. Topics I don’t care for feel very long and tedious and it seems like I’m spending more time thinking about what to write than actually writing. Topics that I do like on the other hand feel much easier to write about and can feel like I’m almost rambling. My writing process begins with a fairly lengthy brainstorming session.
I have had the privilege to spend this spring semester learning from one of the greatest English teachers in the world, and I have been blessed with some amazing new friends that I have met through your class. Because of your positive attitude and brilliant teaching skills, I have made strides in my reading, I have learned the difference between sympathy and empathy, I have strengthened my writing skills, and I have been introduced to more Greek dramas and tragic heros. The entire class and I have worked very hard this semester under the direction of an excellent teacher. Because of this, I request that you give us an additional bonus opportunity as we finish the semester. Coming from a student who has witnessed the tremendous effort and hard
The first goal I wish I could achieve is to improve my business writing skills to make me more
In this semester my achievement of improving my writing skills has increased significantly. My sentence lengths vary in a positive manner along with my word choice improving, becoming more complex and of writing expectation. My main struggle this semester would be the peer editing. Although I have improved significantly I still find it difficult to edit others papers. Further more than the common spelling and grammatical errors. I believe my essays have improved drastically from the beginning of the semester towards the end.
