The Effectiveness of Peer Tutoring with Associative Cognitive Aids on Long-Term Memory Storage
Abstract
Peer Tutoring has been shown an effective learning strategy and innovate solution in multidisciplinary classroom structures. As teachers seek productive methods to incorporate meaningful learning and maintain efficient time management in the classroom, peer tutoring has been implemented as an effective option. Through the process of peer tutoring, the tutor and the tutee both gain individualized skills, immediate performance feedback, continuous progress monitoring, increased peer relationships and self-esteem improvement. With such a strong record of effectiveness, this study proposes an examination of the effectiveness of peer

Researchers Harper and Maheady (2007) combined two peer-teaching procedures and three strategies into a hybrid peer tutoring program implementation. In the first procedure, Classwide Peer Tutoring (CWPT), students were assigned to different pairs each week with each pair on an opposing team (Greenwood, et al., 1991). Using weekly study guides, a deck of cards and paper, each team answered questions to earn points toward a cumulative team total, which resulted in the highest scoring group being recognized as the “Winning Team of the Week” (Harper & Maheady, 2007). The researchers also implemented Numbered Heads Together (NHT), which incorporated cooperative learning with in-group contests. Each pair worked with another pair to form a team. Each team collaborated to structure their best answer in reply to a question given by the teacher. One group member was chosen randomly by the teacher to give the group’s answer to the question while each member worked to ensure a correct answer. Each correct answer earned team points. Results revealed that student quiz scores increased with the utilization of Classwide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) with Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and students of all learning abilities benefited. In a study conducted with sixth grade students, researchers Hughes and Fredrick (2006) examined the effectiveness of Classwide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) in combination with constant time delay in teaching
Being a part of my school’s peer tutoring program has been the most gratifying experience of my high school career. As a student, I can relate to those that struggle in a subject and are unable to connect with the material being taught in class. I have worked with students who have lost confidence in themselves because of the difficulty they were having in school. To be given the opportunity to assist students to reach their academic goals is fulfilling. As a peer tutor, I edit essays, share scholarship searches, assist with homework, and provide studying tips and test taking strategies. I enjoy working with my group to develop habits to be more successful. With each higher grade earned, test anxiety relieved, and confident smile of those that I help, I know that the work I am doing is
Peer tutoring, is simply helping your peers to the best of your ability, with a subject that they are struggling with or just want justification on. I personally have been tutoring others since I was in seventh grade when I began helping elementary school aged children with their homework after school at a community center near my middle school. Tutoring became a newly found passion of mine at that time, and I have enjoyed the opportunity ever since. When I saw that Antioch offered tutoring as a senior class, I was ecstatic, and I signed up immediately. If I am not mistaken, similar to signing up for service learning, one must have a teacher recommendation to take this particular course. There may be other guidelines that I am not aware of at the time, but believe me, taking peer tutoring is well worth it. As a senior, you have to worry about applying to colleges or jobs, applying for scholarships, getting community service hours, working, finishing your capstone project, taking senior pictures, making invitations and announcements, finding internships, and so much
Another solution to better America’s education system is to offer free or affordable tutoring. Often, children and teenagers do not understand the material and fear asking questions in class. Providing free or accessible coaching benefits these struggling students. If students are afraid to ask questions, they need a safe and friendly environment that assists students at a low cost. After a couple of tutoring sessions, the tutor can form a systematic, structured learning experience for the student. In addition to this, after the student sees an improvement in their grades, their motivation, and their attitude towards that subject will ameliorate. On the contrary, parents may believe that tutoring is a waste of time and money. Nevertheless,

Homeschooling is consistent in order to ensure stability in the learning process. Tutors encourages the child creativity and art. The uniqueness of homeschooling is that it allows the students to go on field trips based on their interests and that is to give a child a wholesome approach to life and situations. Tutors always specifically addresses the child as an individual with the aim of ensuring that they get the most of what was learned. One-on-one tutoring has been proven that it boosts the child’s self-esteem (Terry, 2011). The attention of the one-on-one tutoring encourages the child because that attention shows them that their education matters.

It was important to me as a tutor that every driven individual understood the material taught in class. After several weeks of tutoring, I noticed many students struggled to complete their assignments simply because they did not have the assistance available at home. I came to a solution by connecting with them through
Collaborative learning stems from the theory of Vygotsky’s conception of Zone of proximal development. The thought is that children learn best with “help and guidance” (Ormrod, 2012). In transitioning this zone to a collaborative learning experience, children work with their peers in broadening their learning experience, allowing small groups of students to work together to share knowledge, exchange ideas, problem solve, and more. These classroom environments help to create durable abilities in students and aid in producing a “smoother integration into adult society when the activities resemble real-world tasks” (Ormrod, 2012). As students work with peers and adults, they adopt some of the learning strategies demonstrated and develop more skills in problem solving. This scaffolding creates a trickle-down effect of knowledge construction. In collaborative learning, students are afforded a myriad of enriching opportunities to explore perspectives that may differ from their own. These activities serve to create a self-awareness in the student of their responsibilities to a group, requiring them to self-monitor their activity (Lee, Tsai, Chai, & Koh, 2014).
I do think using peer instruction would make sense in a math class because you can put math equations up on the board and use the clickers to anonymously answer. In small groups the students can then work out the problem together and see what they did wrong. It makes sense, but specifically flipping the classroom may not help in a math class. If students already have a hard time in math, trying to understand the lesson on their own would not be easy. Watching a video may help those students better understand the material
In the article, tutoring has improved academic performance which include national standardized tests. In spite of the fact that it's essential for schools, the most valuable factor is the students' comprehension of the curriculum. People learn in various ways, and students motivates self-paced learning and cultivates work habits. Tutoring halls could be an opportunity for students to collaborate with their peers on their strengths and weaknesses, for they would receive additional assistance and knowledge from a like-mind's perspective. Learners will flourish confidence that will guide them in the classroom. As a result possessing boldness and a positive outlook will produce top-notch quality work. Bearing more integrated practice time and review will support students as an entity to
This year, Peer Tutoring introduced a new 1-on-1 program where a tutee is designated a specific tutor for every session to better suit the tutees’ personal needs. A student failing in areas of mathematics was assigned under my care due to the reliable attributes I possess.
Last school year, three of my peers and I decided that our high school needed a peer-tutoring club, so the last few months of my junior year and the first few weeks of my senior year were dedicated to starting this organization. We organized the structure and goals of the club, and presented our ideas to the administrators. Once we got our approval, we immediately began planning lessons. Two days a week we meet with groups of students that come to us for help on improving their ACT scores or general grades. Our service is open to any and every student. We have tutored students in dual-enrollment courses and in standard academic classes.
Use of peers as instructional agents is a hallmark component of the corrective reading program, and one that is supported by empirical evidence. Simmons et al. (1995) investigated the effects of peer instruction on reading abilities of students with learning disabilities and statistically low performing readers. Academic engagement increased as well as spelling and reading posttest scores, suggesting that use of peer tutoring within the corrective reading approach is an effective and productive means to provide reading instruction to students with low reading performance and/or disabilities. Often, peer instruction was found to be more effective than a traditional teacher-mediated instruction.
I will observe 11th grade students and take notes during 40 minutes peer tutoring session. My field notes will include primarily observation and matching one tutor and one tutee at a time. I will observe two randomly selected pair of students during the session. Interviews. I will conduct informal interviews right after my observation with tutees.
Teachers have an essential role in students’ performance and achievement. The quality of teaching, teachers’ experience and knowledge, curriculum planning and instruction they all have effect on students’ achievement. Becker (2010) describes peer coaching as a method that improves teaching and learning. As we can see majority of the time our focus is on students and teaching methods and elements that enhance their achievement. Peer coaching is a new technique and practice that helps teachers to change their teaching practice to achieve better outcome.
