My community, Lisle, is a small, predominantly Caucasian, middle-class town. I can walk down the hallway and recite the first name, last name, and a fun fact of about seventy percent of my peers. Because of its size, I have has the opportunity to get to know majority of my neighbors and become quite familiar with my environment. While the kindness is in abundance, many of the people I meet in town have a confined perception of society. Entering high school, it did not take long for me to notice how prominent labels and groups were and how I did not fit comfortably into any single category. I liked being on the math team, playing soccer, and spending time with friends. But the academics, athletes, and social crowds were distinct, and people seemed to only interact with those of the same race. Nonetheless, at Lisle High School, we have a common saying, “One Pride” which symbolizes both our school mascot, the lion, as well as the unity of the community. I chose to focus on unity, rather than disparities. Following this mentality has …show more content…
Being a part of my school’s peer tutoring program has been the most gratifying experience of my high school career. As a student, I can relate to those that struggle in a subject and are unable to connect with the material being taught in class. I have worked with students who have lost confidence in themselves because of the difficulty they were having in school. To be given the opportunity to assist students to reach their academic goals is fulfilling. As a peer tutor, I edit essays, share scholarship searches, assist with homework, and provide studying tips and test taking strategies. I enjoy working with my group to develop habits to be more successful. With each higher grade earned, test anxiety relieved, and confident smile of those that I help, I know that the work I am doing is
While in High School, I was involved in the Peer Tutoring program. Although I had already been involved with the several other programs, I knew from an early age that a Special Education teacher was what I wanted to do. Helping students achieve their goals and help them to succeed in life was my true calling. But the desire to help the most challenged student drove me beyond regular education. The memories of my Peer tutoring experience kept me striving to be a
On behalf of Beaufort Middle School, myself, Dr. Tomon and The Faculty Council we congratulate you and your student on being selected for membership to the Beaufort Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The NJHS is a program that celebrates the success of many of our hardest working students, based upon academic achievement as well as the demonstration of outstanding character, service, leadership, and citizenship. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. Members of NJHS take pride in their accomplishments and work diligently toward the goal of attaining a superior education and contributing to their school and community. They do their best to provide positive role models for their peers.
While there are many different organizations throughout the community that focus on service and helping others, what truly sets National Honor Society apart in my opinion is the emphasis that is put on leadership. While I have always been told that being a leader is important in daily situations and for future careers, I didn’t realize that leadership played such a relevant role in community service until this past year when I experienced it firsthand. I signed up to volunteer at a senior citizen Christmas party thinking I would just show up, get told where to help out, and then hopefully go home with some extra Christmas cookies, but what I didn’t expect was that I would be the one taking the reins and that my skills as a leader would be put to the test.
Since I was a young boy, I have always been a leader in my community. My mom worked as a teacher, so when school let out, I normally would have to come to Person and wait for my mom to take me home. While waiting for her, I would roam around the school and help out however I was needed (although since I was so young, I could not really do much). Over the years, my sense of helpfulness continued to grow, and it began to show. However, I believe I hit my first (of many) high points during Teachers would ask me if I could help them out in an assortment of different events, ranging from helping to set up band concerts, or helping man a station during the Fall Festival. Also, I joined the National Junior Honor Society in my 6th grade year, and
Throughout my high school career, I have come to be heavily involved in activities within my high school. I was inducted into National Honor Society in the school year of 2015-2016. I came to be involved in the Drama Club for all four years of my high school career, along with being in Student Council all four years as well. In Student Council, I held the position of treasurer my senior year, and was on the executive board. The music department also has been one of the biggest programs I have come to be involved in within my high school career. I have played alto saxophone in concert band all four years of high school, and played alto saxophone my senior year in jazz band. Along with being in both concert band and jazz band, I was also part
The National Honor Society definition of character illustrates that not only is it important for one to uphold the values of honesty, general regard for other, and kindness, but also it is imperative to retain these values in school, work, and personal life. It has been proven that what is done in each aspect can easily affect the other. In my opinion, a good character is one of the most important things one can possess
I am honored to be a candidate for the National Junior Honor Society. This organization means a lot to me. In elementary school, I hadn’t really put much effort into my work because I didn’t know that it would make such a difference in my life. However, in the fourth grade, I realized that what I did would make an impact on the rest of my education. If I didn’t do well then, I wouldn’t make it into honor classes or AP classes, meaning I couldn’t get the higher education I desired. I then began to work harder and my determination increased. My hard work paid off because during my sixth grade graduation, I was one of two students that received the gold for the President’s Education Awards Program (PEAP). Knowing that all the effort was
Although I have been faced with a number of obstacles that have changed me as a person
It is such a privilege to have the opportunity to apply be a part of the National Honors Society. It is one of my high school goals to be in the NHS. I have worked very hard throughout my high school career to get to this point and I will continue to work hard. I believe that I possess all the principles of NHS, scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Education has always been one of my top priorities.
I believe I actively display the four pillars of the National Honor Society, and am honored to be able to prove myself and be considered to become a part of the invaluable experience the National Honor Society provides. The selection process began with my GPA, however I have much more to offer the program. Working alongside my peers and with my coaches and teachers, I have actively displayed not only scholarship, but service, leadership, and character as well. One truly special event that I know I will always remember from my high school years, was being a part of the project called “Second Thoughts”. Along with my completion of a leadership workshop this previous summer, five peers and I were instructed to create a project that addressed
If i was to make the world a better place for all I feel like i would need to be perfect, and as you probably know, i am not. However, if i was able to leave an impact to start the change for the world i believe my skills and talents would be beneficial. The skills and talents that i would say would be most beneficial is the fact that i am very open minded to other people's opinions yet, i can stand my ground on my own. I can also say without a doubt that i am a very humble person and take pride for what my parents did to get me where i am today. The last thing is that i stick to my word, and will keep a promise as long as if i can trust you. Now, let's get more into detail.
My pre-adolescent years were spent in a community thick with diversity. My friendships were as diverse as the environment in which I lived. It never struck me that racial and ethnic ideals separated people in society. However, upon moving to a predominately white upper-class community I began to question such racial and ethnic ideas. From my adolescent years through today I began noticing that certain people are viewed differently for reasons relating to race and ethnicity. As a result, the most recent community I grew up in has kept me sheltered from aspects of society. As a product of a community where majorities existed, I found myself unexposed to the full understanding of race and ethnicity. Prior to the class I had never fully dealt with issues of race or ethnicity, as a result I wondered why they would be of any importance in my life.
At North Haven High School, I have established a leadership position by founding the afterschool Science Peer Tutoring. I enjoy science and more importantly teaching my peers when they need help. I was inspired to start the science peer tutoring after I realized some of my peers struggled with their first year in Chemistry. To help them as well as refresh my skills, I founded the club. In doing so, I was able to meet new students and build new friendships. With growing interest, I was able to recruit two students to help me tutor. Throughout junior year, we were able to assist students —ranging from ninth to eleventh grade— by helping them with their classwork and homework. As the founder of Science Tutoring, I had the opportunity to coordinate
After experiencing being a peer tutor my senior year, I think you should become one too. My peer tutoring class was Algebra 2. A class I did fairly well in. I've learned lot of new things during this experience. I've learned that everybody learns differently, multiple people struggle with the same thing whether it be procrastination, time management, or even listening. I've also learned how to apply these things to my studies as well. I learned from their mistakes. I struggled with procrastination as well as listening in my own studies. So while I was helping them, I was also helping myself. I also learned how to help students who learned in two completely different ways. One was a visual learner while the other was one
Peer Tutoring has been shown an effective learning strategy and innovate solution in multidisciplinary classroom structures. As teachers seek productive methods to incorporate meaningful learning and maintain efficient time management in the classroom, peer tutoring has been implemented as an effective option. Through the process of peer tutoring, the tutor and the tutee both gain individualized skills, immediate performance feedback, continuous progress monitoring, increased peer relationships and self-esteem improvement. With such a strong record of effectiveness, this study proposes an examination of the effectiveness of peer
