Reflecting upon my first year as a peer tutor, I must say that it has been an excellent experience because of what it has provided me. Strictly speaking, my ability to teach has improved, I have obtained many skills, and have found ways to use what I have acquired, to help me in the not-so-far future. Walking into a learning center class brought a very unique learning experience that varied from other classrooms. This stems from the fact that this class had many students all of different ages working on many different courses instead of one; some students would be in the classroom completing math homework, while others would be studying for science. Consequently, I learned that every student varied in their ability to learn; some of the younger students needed me to walk through questions step-by-step while most of the older students just required assistance on how to approach a problem. Furthermore, there were students that had difficulty grasping concepts because of my teaching method. Subsequently, I learned how to assist other students by applying the different types of learning methods. These learning methods essentially helped students use the strongest of their three senses to their advantage. …show more content…
This was partly because of my lack of patience; I was very eager to move on with a question and noticed a little bit of anger build up inside of me when a student failed multiple times. Along with this lack of patience, I also noticed that I was completing small steps to a question in my head, rather than on paper with the student. Consequently, the student was left in a state of confusion, and my presence was rather useless. Thankfully, as time passed and I set out to fix these issues, my ability to teach and be helpful to my peers drastically increased. In the end, I acquired many useful teaching methods and other skills that could aid me in the
Being a part of my school’s peer tutoring program has been the most gratifying experience of my high school career. As a student, I can relate to those that struggle in a subject and are unable to connect with the material being taught in class. I have worked with students who have lost confidence in themselves because of the difficulty they were having in school. To be given the opportunity to assist students to reach their academic goals is fulfilling. As a peer tutor, I edit essays, share scholarship searches, assist with homework, and provide studying tips and test taking strategies. I enjoy working with my group to develop habits to be more successful. With each higher grade earned, test anxiety relieved, and confident smile of those that I help, I know that the work I am doing is
This article by Wink is significant because it exposes how linear teaching does not always work for every classroom. Teachers are taught to teach one specific way and often times they neglect the needs of their classrooms because they do not adjust to the student’s needs. I liked that Wink talked about learning, unlearning, and relearning because it shows the process of effective teaching in a new classroom. It is significant because we need to realize that the process of learning should be mutual between the
Although most of the material being covered was at elementary school levels my service at this school was very fulfilling. I was able to hone my one-on-one tutoring skills more than I ever had before. It gave me the confidence to want to achieve more and connect with more students. My biggest fear was whether I would be able to cultivate relationships with my students, I don’t want to end up as a cold or distant teacher.
Last school year, three of my peers and I decided that our high school needed a peer-tutoring club, so the last few months of my junior year and the first few weeks of my senior year were dedicated to starting this organization. We organized the structure and goals of the club, and presented our ideas to the administrators. Once we got our approval, we immediately began planning lessons. Two days a week we meet with groups of students that come to us for help on improving their ACT scores or general grades. Our service is open to any and every student. We have tutored students in dual-enrollment courses and in standard academic classes.
What was my reaction to the peer assessments? More than anything I was pleasantly surprised. I got a better rating and assessment than I thought I would.
This semester we were given the task of finding an ELL or English Language Learner student to tutor and get to know. My goal was to get to know a student and find ways to help or enhance this student’s educational experience this year. I found my student in a kindergarten classroom at Hunter Elementary in West Valley Utah. This is a lower socioeconomic area. The school has a variety of diverse learners in the classroom and school. This area tends to have a lot of movement in and out of the school. Not just people moving but people going out of town like Mexico for long periods of time to visit family and sometimes they don’t even come back. This makes teaching in this area little more difficult due to the school make up and not knowing if
The role that I play as an action scientist in my organization is ensuring that the guidelines are set by the Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners and the Community College are adhered to by the faculty and students. The rules for licensure is the same for every institution; therefore, it is my role as an action scientist to ensure that single-loop learning is taking place in the department.
The key to instruction being effective is not through textbooks or programs marketed (Blackburn, 2016), but teachers that care about their students, and seek to guide all students’ learning regardless of gender, ethnicity, poverty level, or background. As Blackburn (2016, p. Xiv) quotes, “The old saying is true: Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. But caring alone isn’t enough. You must also connect with your students in ways that will help them learn”.
Tutoring this semester has been a unique but motivating experience thus far. I have learned quite a bit about tutoring but even more than that I have learned about myself. Through this experience I have become aware of my own strengths and weaknesses. I have learned a lot of patience that I will need not only to continue tutoring but also in life as well. Although I have always considered myself a decent communicator but tutoring has definitely caused me to to improve my communication skills.
I encourage you to become a peer tutor student. Tutoring is helping a student help him/herself to the point that they have become independent You'll learn so much about other students and it will help you mature. Not only will becoming a peer tutor help you grow as a student yourself but it is an easy way to boost your GPA and will look pretty impressive on a resume. Many students have learning disabilities that prevent them from learning at higher paces as other students but with the right practice they can become as independent as others. In your peer tutoring class room that is assigned to you will do more than just tutor the students. Some days the assigned teacher will send you out to print documents, make copies, and sometimes
This increase in understanding in the class room and overall school system can be achieved through the implementation of several programs created that target students as well as programs for instructors as well as adding informational posters throughout the school (Weisman et al., 2016, p. 710).
Student-centered classrooms that create ways for students to demonstrate their understanding of learning activities show that students are willing to be more engaged and take on risks in classroom activities when they feel safe (Black, 1999). The teaching for understanding proponent of the Iowa Core’s “Characteristics of Effective Instruction” from the Iowa Department of Education (n.d.) encourages students to think in a provoking way. Teachers need to utilize
During my time observing at INK Interactive Museum for Kids, I not only encountered children of all ages and cultural backgrounds, I also encountered many of the topics discussed in this class during the course of the semester. I was able to get a firsthand look at how these methods work, and how they assist in a student’s learning environment and educational achievement. I got to assist with the children at the museum and watch them come in shy and timid at the vast learning environment, and then leave with a thirst for learning and amazement at what they encountered at INK that day. Many of the experiences and learning methods I encountered at INK helped me gain a better understanding of how these topics are implemented in the classroom, and will guide me in the future as I shape my future classroom around many of these methods.. Throughout this paper I will discuss my time at INK, reflect on what I learned as future educator, and how these experiences will influence the teaching methods in my future classroom.
The first week of this unit I had a mix of emotions, excitement and stress . The topics covered each week have giving me the opportunity to increase my knowledge in many areas. Having an interest in teaching when I started this course has now grown to having an interest in learning as well. Reflecting on my education as a child has shown me the growth in teaching and our current education system.
“Carson...Carson…did you hear me?” Getting the attention of a young teen while tutoring math can be a real challenging experience. During the summer months, I would go over to my cousin’s house once or twice a week, every week, to tutor him in math. Fighting through the sweat from the blazing heat outside and attempting to be cooled down by the small fan that sat beside us, we would go through an online math course, pencils in hand, and I would teach him a different lesson each session. He went from just sitting there staring at the screen with a blank piece of paper in front of him and not knowing what to do to improving greatly on his math skills and understanding the concepts fast. By the end of the session, his paper was filled with the many math calculations he had to attempt.
