This semester we were given the task of finding an ELL or English Language Learner student to tutor and get to know. My goal was to get to know a student and find ways to help or enhance this student’s educational experience this year. I found my student in a kindergarten classroom at Hunter Elementary in West Valley Utah. This is a lower socioeconomic area. The school has a variety of diverse learners in the classroom and school. This area tends to have a lot of movement in and out of the school. Not just people moving but people going out of town like Mexico for long periods of time to visit family and sometimes they don’t even come back. This makes teaching in this area little more difficult due to the school make up and not knowing if …show more content…
That started conversations on what she likes to do, eat and wants to be when she grows up. This was a great icebreaker to get to know each other; because I did one as well so she could get to know me as well this was an idea I got from the book Creating Welcoming Schools by JoBeth Allen. Getting to know our students helps us as educators get to know their funds of knowledge and what they bring to the classroom. Some of the strengths of Abigail is she is a leader. She helps other students who are ELs by translating to students who speak little to no English. Her personality is hard not to love. She is always so funny and open with everyone and a friend with everyone. She loves to try new things, one day we were tracing letters and numbers in shaving cream. She loved every second of it! She was so excited to do something messy and hands on. She had a great time and had practiced her letters and numbers at the same time. She loved anything I planned she was very fun and easy to work …show more content…
This included letter sounds and letter recognition, counting, writing her name and writing numbers. From the beginning of the semester I can see that she has improved and will continue to improve over the remainder of the year. Some connection I made through this experience to the TESL class was that parents and their involvement in the classroom and school is so important to the teacher and the especially the students. As a teacher I will be sure to incorporate and use my students funds of knowledge to help concept the curriculum to my students. I loved talking and getting to know Abigail’s parents through the interview with her

The CAPSA tutoring program is an organization that aims to provide assistance for new immigrants and others in adapting to the American society of Montgomery County. Tutoring is a sheer part of this goal. As a Chinese immigrant myself, I have attended CAPSA as a tutee before. During the four years as a tutee, I have benefitted academically and socially. Growing up through CAPSA with my tutors and peers, it truly inspired me to give back to the community that had shaped me to who I am today. Two years ago, I applied to be a tutor with the passion in helping others just as my tutors had done for me. During these two years, I have tutored both newly immigrated eighth grade students, both of which were completely different in personality. The
Journal one of the Westminster College class EDU 562 Field Experience was related to observation and participation with a first grade classroom, on Monday, January 4, 2016. Upon arrival the class teacher provided instructions to assist in the set up of the classroom January calendar, make a graph of the lunch choices, and to pass out morning work for the students to complete as they arrived in the classroom. At 8:30 a.m. the teacher welcomed most of the students with excitement as they entered the room. She informed the students in detail and repeated the routine and morning arrival instructions. Once everyone arrived, the teacher rang a bell which symbolized it
I found it interesting that of the three ELL teachers interviewed, only one had a personal ELL experience. This teacher teaches at my middle school. She moved here from Poland when she was nine years old. She didn’t know any English besides basic words like colors
Something I have learned during my short seventeen years of life is the importance of embracing the differences in talent and ability of those among us. The fact that not everyone will be adept at everything is incontestable, and therein lies a great opportunity to help one another. If only Michael Phelps could help me with swimming, or Mariah Carey could help me with singing. I believe that for me, the Writing Center could give me a chance to help out, even if it doesn’t help anyone earn Olympic Gold or Grammies. As a community, I have found that North Shore High School has been exemplary at providing services for those who need a helping hand. Peer Leaders, National Honor Society Tutoring, and of course the Writing Center, are just a few
Jayden is an ESOL student who has strong speaking, listening, and writing skills but is considered intermediate with his reading skills. He has problems decoding reading and even greater problems with getting a deeper understanding from reading, for instance, making inferences. He approaches language for its socially informative aspect. He prefers social interaction to solve problems and to make clarifications on something he does not understand. If he doesn’t understand a text or a word he will usually ask a friend first or the teacher, depending on who is more accessible at the time. He is also motivated by the social aspect of learning and therefore benefits from learning in cooperative learning environments rather than individual ones. He also leans toward looking for answers via oral communication first, rather than looking back at the text and reading for the information. Jayden lacks personal strategies for learning, especially in regards to reading and writing. His strategies have
Utah’s population of ELLs is diverse and while many of these students are in the process of acquiring English, they are entering Utah classrooms at different ages and grades along with varying degrees of educational
During the months of September and October this semester I spent time at two different schools in four different classrooms. Being able to observe different classes and teachers at Westside Junior High and South Live Oak Elementary was a very new and exciting experience for me since I can’t say I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. My experiences at these schools gave me a better insight into the differences between schools, classrooms, and teachers. The purpose of this field experience was to get 10 observation or tutoring hours in an elementary or junior high setting. I chose to observe a
Currently, I am student teaching at Alfred E. Zampella PS #27 School in the district of Jersey City. The school is located in a busy city, next to John F. Kennedy St. which is especially busy in the morning and during rush hour. This results in several late students on a day to day basis. On the other hand, this school is also highly accessible and as a little over a thousand students. The school has grade levels from kindergarten to 8th grade, and has a mix of general, special, and inclusion education classrooms. Typically, families that enroll their students into this school are of lower-middle socio-economic class, and tend to be majority Hispanic, Indian, and African American, with few Caucasians and Asians. This school provides a variety of special programs for their ESL students and special need students. Students may be offered speech language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, ESL programs, reading recovery, and counseling.
For this assignment, I had the pleasure of working with the same student I worked with for the first assignment. My student is in second grade and I well be referring to her as J.R. While working with J.R., I assessed her using four different assessments and I really got to understand her as a learner. This assignment was different from the first assignment because I was able to dig deeper into her literacy knowledge and I was able to identify many of her strengths and areas of need. I feel like I understand J.R. a lot better because I now know about her personally and educationally.
In that class, the student learns about different teaching methods and how to care for children. As part of the curriculum, we volunteered at Long Elementary as teacher aides. Working with 4th grade students and observing an everyday class room was such an awe-inspiring experience. I had a completely new perspective about teachers. I have so much more respect as before. Teachers put so much time and effort into helping children for their benefits. I knew from the first day I helped with Ms. Williams’ 4th grade class, how much a teacher is a positive influence on children. There is an overwhelming feeling when you help a student with a problem and in return they give you the most heart-warming smile. The experience at Long Elementary helped me make my final decision on whether I wanted to teach elementary or secondary school. As much as I enjoyed helping elementary students, in my heart I knew secondary school was the path God had in store for me.
Build the Wall! Build the Wall! We want the wall! Currently, these are the things that we are hearing in the United States. Building a wall to not allow immigrants to cross into our border. Except, we are not the only country, that deals with immigration. What exactly is immigration? Immigration is the international movement of people into a destination of where they are not native’s country of which they are not natives or where they do not possess citizenship in order to settle there. Immigration has its pros and its cons. Immigration policies can be related to four other aspects of policy: political, economic, social, and demographic. Economic issues are medium term decisions, while, social issues are long-term concerns. Let’s talk about
The Star of David, has changed over time, not physically, but in the way it is viewed, and it’s symbolism. The Star of David is a symbol mostly relates to Jews and God. The top point is pointing up toward God and the bottom point is pointing toward the Jews on Earth. Kabbalists think that the six points represent God's rule over the whole universe in six directions which are north, south, east, west, up, and down. Pelaia, Ariela. "Does the Star of David Have Religious Significance in Judaism?" About.com Religion & Spirituality. N.p., 1 Mar. 2016. Web. 11 Mar. 2016. While researching about the Star of David, I have found several sources which describe the significance of the Star of David, and why it is yellow. The Star of David, has changed a little, symbolically since after the Holocaust. This is because Hitler forced the Jews to wear it during the Holocaust, and it was a symbol of shame for them to wear it, also, it marked any Jew and it brought up more persecution for them; it wasn’t like that before the Holocaust. My person that I interviewed is very unique besides being a very good teacher. She had received the honor of being selected ‘Teacher of the Year” a few years back here at Perkins County Schools (Grant, NE), so I knew her methods and strategies were tried and true. She has several different hats in our school system with English Language Learner (ELL) being just one part. She was asked to work with/for me in this program with our high school ELL students while I concentrated on Elementary and Middle School. She is in charge of the district’s Speech department which has also had great success. Finally, she is the school’s Spanish teacher, and a very good one. I have
Nuclear energy technology seems to be increasing at an alarming rate in order to meet the astonishing increase in demand for electricity. A lot of countries have doubled their efforts to produce nuclear energy in order to meet the worlds new clean energy demands, some even more than other. The aim of this paper is to address the mounting success and development of nuclear energy and power particularly in Russia, and its domination in the future.
