I am interested in pediatrics. I have been working professionally with a pediatrician/clinical geneticist, and we work closely with children suffering from mitochondrial diseases. We identify mutations from whole exome sequencing of DNA of affected patients, and carry out functional studies on the genes affected. Diagnosis is often too late for these patients, since each patient's shows a different clinical variation, making it difficult to detect. As someone who suffered from pneumonia as a kid due to the lack of basic healthcare facilities, I would like to help young kids with the knowledge I will gain by specializing in Pediatric. The long term effects of my pneumonia has made me realize how an early diagnosis can help a child have a better
As I begin my fifth year of working as a nurse practitioner in a leading children’s hospital, I am certain the pediatric acute care setting is where I will continue my career of service to children and their families. Although I hold a masters degree in nursing and have been a primary care certified pediatric nurse practitioner for many years, I wish to expand my knowledge of pediatric nursing to encompass the unique and challenging aspects of pediatric acute care.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” As a child, we have all been asked this question; and as unrealistic children, we all had dreams of being a superhero, princess, cowboy, or astronaut. Later on in life, as time went by, and as we became more knowledgeable, our answers became more serious. Some of us wanted to be teachers, business owners, or a veterinarian. However, I have always wanted to be a doctor, but not just any doctor. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a pediatrician. Now, half way through my junior year in high school, I have started to question the details of this career, and all the hard work it takes to become a part of the medical field.

I believe the Pediatric Oncology Education program will provide me with different standpoints on cancer research outside of what I have previously experienced. In my previous labs I have worked with brain cancer and skin cancer. However, I have not experienced working with other types of cancer and their potential treatment ideas. This expansion of my understanding of cancer effecting the body overall may allow for future conclusions, ideas, and projects. Additionally, working for St. Jude provides excellent research environment and interactions with mentors that may have a huge impact on my career
I want to become a Child Life specialist in the future. Child life specialists are trained professionals with knowledge in helping children and their families overcome some of life’s challenging and stressful events. Child life specialist have knowledge in child development and family systems, child life specialists promote effective coping through play, preparation, education, and self-expression activities(Child Life Council). They provide emotional and psychosocial support for children and families in a health care setting based on the individuals needs. Because they understand that a child’s wellbeing depends on the support of the family, child life specialists provide information, support and guidance to parents, siblings, and other family
The goal for pediatric care is clear. Children need readily accessible medical care that can be comprehensive with the ability to address primary care as well as acute and chronic conditions. Every child has access to an emergency room however

I am looking for many things in a university, the first thing is a university that has a prestigious science and pre-med department. I want to pursue a career in these fields to become a pediatric oncologist because studying cancer and serving others is something that I am very passionate about. My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer my sophomore year of highschool, and this wrecked my world. I was raised in a very family oriented environment and I have a large close knit family, so hearing the news about my grandmother broke my heart. My grandmother has fought excruciatingly hard to beat cancer for the past two years and has come very close. Unfortunately, all of the cancer is not completely gone from her body. From that moment forward,
During my three years in college thus far, I have immersed myself in research labs. I hope to become a child therapist in the future because I love psychology and working with children. I started working in the Childhood Maltreatment Lab and Cortisol Lab during my freshman year. In this lab, we observe participants with a history of being maltreated as a child and took data based on how they reacted to certain tasks. I am preparing for a senior thesis about the language development of deaf children. Seeing that I am minoring in deaf studies, this topic is a perfect blend of my interests. If I was awarded this scholarship, I would use it towards studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. When I asked college graduates what they regretted most about
I have been working towards obtaining my knowledge in order to know what to expect in this line of work and getting to know the environment a pediatrician
My interest is giving to the less fortunate and helping kid with health issues because I feel like homeless people and kid with health issues get treated differently. For example people who are less fortunate get treated like animals because they don’t have a house and they don't have anywhere to shower. Also people who don’t talk to them and I feel like they are ignored. Also I feel like kids with health issues also don't get to have fun since they are always in the hospital. Kids with health issues also don’t have any friend to come and play with them since they don’t go to school often since they are at the hospital.
At the age of ten, you set a goal for yourself. You decide you want to be a pediatrician you tell yourself I will be all I set out to be no matter the obstacles I will face. Keep in mind you are only 10 years old so you don't fully understand all the struggles you may truly face. Imagine this you started a journey towards your life long dream career. You start your first year of college and realize it may just not be for you after all. The dream you once had may seem to be falling apart. Your grades are slipping and you are falling into a funk. You start to wonder is this even for me? Should I even be doing this? Is this worth my time or my money? Every bad question you could ask yourself starts running through your mind. Perhaps you can do
During my training, I observed the breadth of knowledge of my pediatric teachers and their enthusiasm for differential diagnosis and passion over most suitable treatment options showed me how interesting the field of pediatrics could be. .Around the same time, I experienced the intricate processes involved in treating children with multiple co-morbidities, as well as the strength and compassion needed to take care of the patient and the family as a whole. Additionally, I liked the challenge of being asked a set of symptoms and brainstorming a list of probable diagnosis. I love to follow the trail like a police detective from symptoms to
