My interest in medicine was triggered by my own early experiences with nut allergy, which I was diagnosed with as a child. It fuelled my pursuit of knowledge in medical science as I was fascinated how there is not a known cause of peanut allergy. This captivating medical dilemma led me to recognise that there is a lot yet to be discovered in medicine. My curiosity in this field inspired me to initiate contact with allergy specialists and write a personal study on the topic where I explored the genetic and environmental effects of developing a peanut allergy.
To gain an insight into the holistic nature of medicine I volunteered at Quebec Hall Care Home. Spending time with dementia sufferers, feeding them and listening to their stories made me appreciate how important personal care is in order to improve their quality of life and how the carers' role is vital in providing support. The most sobering experience however was with a mesothelioma patient. As with most mesothelioma's, the diagnosis occurred in an advanced stage. Following this experience I have taken a keen interest in the developments of a new treatment in clinical trials, 'pazopanib' an angiogenesis drug, which works by blocking nutrients and oxygen, preventing new blood vessels in cancerous tissue to grow. Reading Robert Weinberg's 'The Biology of Cancer' expanded my knowledge; it was informative to see the treatment of cancer in both theory and practice. In clinic, I observed junior and senior doctors communicating efficiently with patients and how important it was for them to develop a rapport. The combination of good teamwork and strong communication skills from everyone involved, including doctors, nurses and patients appealed to me
