The first half of the Peach Bowl was a defensive duel, and Houston Football shut down Florida State. The 3rd Ward defense made Dalvin Cook a total nonfactor, and other than two long passes to start off a couple of drives the QB play of the Seminoles was another nonfactor. The starting QB for Florida State, Sean Maguire was injured his left ankle early in the first quarter trying find an open receiver as he rolled out and took a big hit. Backup QB J.J. Cosentino had to come in, and was not ready. The front seven for the Cougars were consistently in the backfield, and caused havoc for Florida State’s offense. Cook fumbled after Houston took a 14-3 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the half, and have the Cougars the ball in the red zone and scored on a 6 yard run by Ward for his second rushing touchdown of the half. On Florida State’s following drive Maguire underthrew that would have been a touch if he hit his receive in stride, but it was picked off by William Jackson III. However, the Seminoles defense stepped up and caused a 3 and out. The Cougars went into half with a 21-3 lead. Ward scored on a 7 yard run for the first touchdown of the day as Houston went 64 yards in 11 plays in 2 minutes and 33 seconds as they picked up the pace on the drive. Florida State followed with a field goal. Both defenses stepped up after the scoring and FSU intercepted a tipped pass, then the teams punted back and forth before Houston scored another touchdown. The second touchdown was a pass from WR Demarcus Ayers on a reverse to WR Chance Allen. The pass was Ayers second passing TD on the season that capped off a 7 play 75 yard drive that only took off 2 minutes and 7 seconds off the
