Softball Clinches First SCAC Tournament Appearance
SHERMAN, Texas – All the Ladies needed to do to secure its first appearance in the 2016 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament was beat Austin College in one of four games this weekend. The Maroon and White wasted no time, as Centenary (18-20, 7-15 SCAC) took game one 8-4 before falling to Austin College (12-24, 4-18) 5-1 in the nightcap of softball double header Friday, April 15.
The Ladies led 5-0 before Austin College even recorded a hit. Senior Emily Sexton began the game with a single and scored on sophomore Michelle Tasin’s double. Miller (5-4) picked up the win in the circle for the Ladies, allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned) in 5.1 innings pitched. Gillet led the Centenary offense by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Raquel Vara went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the home team.
Victoria Herrera (5-13) went the distance, allowing eight hits and eight runs (five earned) in the loss. She got the complete game win in the finale of the day, allowing three hits and just one run with four strikeouts.
Game two started off promising for the Ladies when Sexton led off the game with a double and scored on a pair of sacrifices, but that was it for the Centenary offense – which managed only three hits in the game.
Nichole Aldridge (8-13) took the loss in the circle, allowing nine hits and five runs (three earned) in six innings of work.

In a heartbreaking loss in game one, Centenary rallied from an 8-2 deficit to take a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the eighth. However, Trinity scored two in the ninth for the thrilling 10-9 win. With Centenary down 8-2 in the fifth, the Maroon and White erupted for five runs to cut the deficit to one. Quintanilla walked and Schimpf singled to put runners on the corners. With one out, Crowder singled up the middle for an RBI. Russell singled to load the bases, and a bases-loaded walk with two outs plated the second run. During the fourth inning, Colby blasted four hits scoring three runs. Tanner Trusell, Wade Rush, and Bryce Meyers each scored on hits to the outfield.
The Ladies got back on the scoreboard in the seventh with a one-out sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run. Then, they followed that up with a RBI single for an insurance run and to make it a two-run contest.
In the first game of the doubleheader Madi Perez, ‘17, (4-0) led the way. She tossed seven strong innings, allowing two runs and on five hits while walking just one Regal batter. Perez struck out more hitters than she allowed on base, totaling up seven strikeouts in the game.
The Bruins got the run back in its half of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Again, Meyer was involved in the scoring for Pacific in the fourth inning. With two out, Von Ferguson (Everett, Wash.) was hit by a pitch, who would later come around to score when Meyer doubled to centerfield. The play of the game came in the bottom half of the 12th inning and extended the game one more inning. After two of the first three Diamond Dawgs reached, Altamonte Springs coach Kevin Davidson decided to have McCarthy issue an intentional base-on-balls to Marshawn Taylor (Grambling State) that loaded the bases with one out. He then fanned pitcher Mathew Oset (Seminole State College) on three pitches. Devlin Granberg (Cisco Junior College) popped up down the right field line and Tyler Langley (Central Arkansas) made a diving catch to retire the side and allow the winning run to be scored in the next inning.

The softball doubleheader between the top-two teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference on Friday, between your Ladies and Texas Lutheran, has been moved up an hour to 4 p.m. The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at noon.
Freshman Wendy Gillet appeared on the Second Team as a First Baseman, while classmate Nichole Aldridge (pitcher), sophomore Michelle Tasin (second base) and senior Emily Sexton (outfielder) were named Honorable Mention.
Zapata added an RBI double in the fourth, finishing the game a triple short of the cycle and 3-for-4 with five RBI’s and two runs scored in the final game of the tournament.
In game two, Centenary fell behind 3-0 before scoring two in the fourth because of a key error and one more in the fifth. With two down in the fourth, senior Lizzie Moran hit a groundball to first that was misplayed to allow her to beat the throw. Moran stole second and scored on sophomore Wendy Gillet’s RBI hit. While trying to gun down Moran at the plate, Gillet moved to second and scored on freshman Ashley Albright’s hit.

The contest against the Crusaders are also important for both teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament picture. The Ladies (3-8-1, 2-5-1 SCAC) currently sit tied with Dallas (3-8-2, 2-5-1 SCAC) for the fourth seed as both teams have seven points. Sitting right behind, tied for sixth, is Austin College and Southwestern at 2-6 (six points). All four teams are fighting for the final three spots.
NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Centenary triathlon team completed its first meet of the season Monday, September 4, at the Central Regional Qualifier hosted by North Central College. The Ladies finished seventh overall and second among teams from NCAA Division III institutions.
