I have chosen to participate in Partners in Wellness because of the abundance of opportunities that are provided within the program. I am particularly interested in participating in clinical volunteering at the Oncology and Neurology department. Partners in Wellness also offers possibilities which most organizations on campus do not have, one being the physician shadowing program.
Before beginning the Master of Social Work program at Laurier I figured I had a strong understanding of what social work was. However, I quickly learned that I had only scratched the surface. I knew oppression existed, but I never understood the depth of it. I now know that I was afraid of it. It was easy for me to stay silent, because it was such a comfortable position to be in. Doing nothing meant I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. This was influenced by the privilege I had.
through volunteer service, a physician can help improve the health of the community as a whole. Throughout my life, I
Academically, I love explaining and elaborating concepts to my peers, either through casual meetings or through a formal tutoring program, like what Geisel offers. By teaching, I can not only help others, but also learn much better than studying alone. I’m also looking forward to participate in the “Partners in Health Education” program or the “Health Education and Rescue Training (HEART)” program, where I can spread health related knowledge to the
Within all aspects of life there are risks to be taken, my role is to deliver personcentred planning around the residents individual needs, wishes, beliefs and choices. In regard to infection prevention and control residents individual activities of choice may need to be risk assessed in order to protect them and employees from any biological risks posed. There are current regulations and legislation relating to PPE which are PPE a Work Regulations 2002, the management of Health and Safety and Work Regulations 1999 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
I have a good level of education that is evident through completing a BSc Social Work Degree. Through completing the degree, I have developed experience working with older adults and adults with mental health problems. Also, my knowledge of services, legislation and mental health needs has developed through my continuous professional development. I have a good knowledge of mental health legislations including the Mental Health Act 1983 and its amendments (2007), Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Care programme approach. Throughout my experiences, I developed a sound understand of sections under the Mental Health Act 1983 including service user discharge and aftercare arrangements (Section 117 aftercare) and various sections that service users can become detained under.
I had been working with a child where I needed to conduct an assessment. Before the meeting to share the information with the parents, I sent them a copy of the completed assessment to enable them to gather their thoughts so that at the meeting I was able to answer any specific concerns. The mother had rang me the day she received the assessment as she was not happy about the comments written. I explained to the mother that we could discuss the matter at the meeting but, although she did not respond, I could sense that the mother was still irate.
I have never really focused on the issues that our economy is facing; therefore, I find reading articles like these rather interesting. They provide me with material and questions I would not have looked up before. My favorite quote from the article was, “Monetary policy has been keeping the patient alive, creating the possibility of a lasting cure through fiscal and structural operations,” as stated by BoE Chief. I thought this line to be very funny and blunt. The comparison of the nation to a patient really put into perspective the how tragic our economic system is doing. Also, I have come to belief that people are okay with the monetary policy because it has been providing some relief to our problems, but people must find an actually solution,
The service user I am currently working with is P (26) single parent and B (15-month-old) infant. She was referred to our service via the orthopaedic nurse, to get access to relevant service within her community. B has complicated health needs and requires specialist children centre groups, due to her low immune system. The family are isolated and find it challenging to socialise, and require support finding playgroups for her child. Additionally, P has a new partner and she has made me aware that he emotionally abusing her and feels more isolated due to his controlling behaviour. He prevents her from seeing old friends and changed requested her to change her number. P has made me aware that R does not trust her, and accuses her of being intimate
In recent years, reflection and reflective practice have become well-known term with in the health care arena. They are words that have been debated and discussed with in the health care setting (Tony and Sue 2006). Reflective practice is essential for nurses, as nurses are responsible for providing care to the best of their ability to patients and their families (NMC, 2008). Reid (1993) states reflection is a process of reviewing an experience of practice in order to describe, analyse, evaluate and so inform learning about practice. Johns (1995) notes that reflection enables practitioners to assess, understand and learn through their experience. Reflective practice, therefore, offers nurses an opportunity to review their decisions and
I love the idea of providing students with a variety of opportunities that would satisfy each student's needs. Whether its research, volunteering and community service, it all is provided here. The curriculum also allows for a great amount of flexibility enabling students to pursue these other interest that would make them very competitive for residencies. I have a great interest in practicing in underserved communities upon graduation, therefore every opportunity I get to volunteer in clinics and shadow physician in underserved regions is something I look forward to here at Western University of Health Sciences. Likewise, the diverse student body is great as each student come from various backgrounds and have unique experiences all of which
I feel that I have benefitted immensely from the partnership program. Volunteering at the hospital has given me an inside look into the different departments of the hospital. I job shadowed at ACMH my tenth grade year and this program has given me a much better look at the job of a nurse. I am going to nursing school in the fall and this opportunity has allowed me to see the different departments and I was not aware of how many there were. At any department that I went to, I found them interesting and engaging. The nurses, nurse aids, and staff were all nice and very informative. The nurses and nurse aids were more than willing to tell you what they were doing and why. In the Ambulatory Surgery department for example, the surgeons told me what
For the purpose of confidentiality and anonymity, I have changed the patients name and throughout of the reflection I will refer to them as Mrs Smith.
The purpose of this essay is to reflect on my personal role in the inter-professional team and the delivery of healthcare that I have encountered during my duty as a health care assistant in one of the hospitals here in England. In accordance with the NMC (2002) Code of professional conduct, confidentiality shall be maintained and all names have been changed to protect identity. The purpose of reflection as stated by John's (1995) is to promote desirable practice through the practitioner's understanding and learning about his/her lived experiences. I have decided to reflect upon an incident with the nurse in charge in one of my shifts and in order to structure my reflection I
Overall, I have been very impressed with how this course is going so far. I appreciate having a short presentation on the topic each week then having the opportunity to discuss the topic with other group members. I have learned a lot from the readings as well as from other group members. By having everyone share their ideas and thoughts, I feel that I have gotten more out of this course than I had expected. With everyone coming from different educational backgrounds and experiences, it has been interesting to be exposed to different ideas and perceptions on some of these topics. In addition, having group members question and challenge my ideas have promoted me to think more in-depth and explore more closely about the topics. As of right now, there seems to be no issues with my group. Everyone participates in weekly discussions as well as writing the summary. Ideas and opinions are shared in a respectful manner
What health and wellness mean to me may be different than what the textbook would state health and wellness is. Health means to me the condition in which your body is, which could be poor or good health. The mind, spirit, physicality would pertain all to the state of one's body. Wellness is the consistent goal towards being in wellness meaning that one strives to be in good personal health. The book describes wellness as; “ wellness is the physical-well being , emotional-well being ,and spiritual- well being.” (Robert T. Harper) According to Merriam Webster the definition of health is “the condition of being sound in mind, body, and spirit.”(...) There is not much difference between what I perceive as health and
