I love the idea of providing students with a variety of opportunities that would satisfy each student's needs. Whether its research, volunteering and community service, it all is provided here. The curriculum also allows for a great amount of flexibility enabling students to pursue these other interest that would make them very competitive for residencies. I have a great interest in practicing in underserved communities upon graduation, therefore every opportunity I get to volunteer in clinics and shadow physician in underserved regions is something I look forward to here at Western University of Health Sciences. Likewise, the diverse student body is great as each student come from various backgrounds and have unique experiences all of which
During my time volunteering at Wilmington Health and Rehab and The Woods at Holly Tree, I learned a lot from the experience by talking with the residents and observing. To be honest I was quite nervous when I started to volunteer. Although I’ve been to elder center before because of my grandmother, great grandmother, and volunteering with my church but, I was never around a big group of elder people I didn’t know. After my first day of volunteering I felt a lot more comfortable and it felt rewarding knowing I was able to help make their day. In this essay I will be discussing my experience, any myths or stereotypes that were presented, several theories, and any diversity I observed.
I have done a few things to help out my environment, but as the old saying goes “even the smallest things can make a major difference. I am a constant volunteer for a group named “posABILITIES”. My youngest sister is a member of this group. They help people who have special needs, for example down syndrome, cerebral paralysis, autism, etc.
One way of helping the homeless is by volunteering at your local homeless shelter. Volunteering is a very beneficial way of helping the homeless. “The most productive way to get started helping the homeless is to join forces with a well-established operation.” (“4 Ways You Can Help the Homeless in Your Community”) As said in the quote, join forces with a well-established operation. When you volunteer at your local homeless shelter you are not only helping your community out, but you are also helping the homeless in and around that area. “Volunteer your hobbies - Every one of us has something we can give the homeless. Wherever our interests may lie -- cooking, repairing, gardening, and photography -- we can use
volunteering is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task. In this report i will talk about the different types of volunteering in the:
I am interning at Heartfelt, a mental health agency that works with adults, children and their families that deal with any type of behavior and mental health problem since 2006 with a mission to provide culturally competent, and professionally sound mental health, foster care, youth development and family support services to empower our community one child and one family at a time. The services that Heartfelt offers to clients are intensive in-home therapy, outpatient therapy, community support team (CST), peer support, medication management, and residential level III group home. Many of the clients at Heartfelt are offered Outpatient therapy service compared to other services. My role at Heartfelt is as an intern who is supervised by a MSW field supervisor completing tasks. Few of tasks that I perform at Heartfelt is shadowing professionals performing assessments and intakes with clients, working on various administrative projects such as finding resources for clients and reviewing and updating clients’ charts.
For most, lending a hand to someone only really counts for family members and friends. A person never really thinks about all the outside people in the world that need a little help. When the holiday season comes around people may not have the money to feed their families or buy Christmas gifts for their kids. Many agencies broadcast on television how to help these families, not just in your state but around the world. Like most, I for one have never volunteered, but I have donated. For a person that is looking to start volunteering, a little research should be done on different places. I for one like The Salvation Army as an organization. I always see them around the holiday season outside with the bells and red pails. Before volunteering
I chose to volunteer with Alliance San Diego because it seemed like a group that cared about justice for everyone. And they did not appear to be a sit by and wait around group, they were a group of angry activist fighting for justice even before the election. Safe to say when the election was between Hillary and Donald, shit hit the fan. Our country was in complete disarray, stuck between a candidate they did not like, and a candidate hell bent on killing us all. The obvious option was the spawn of Satan, clearly. In our current situation activism is necessary. A lot of Alliance’s work has to do with people of color. Before the election it was encouraging people to vote, educating them on their option,
To understand the importance of volunteering, I volunteered at one cultural event in San Antonio downtown. It was the festival of Diwali, a festival of light celebrate in India every year, organized by the San Antonio municipal and Indian Association. In San Antonio’s downtown we have a Riverwalk and the booth was on one side of river with the bleacher and on the other side was the stadium. Folk dances of India were performed on the stage. I volunteered at a booth of drink. My job was to sell soft drinks like coke for a dollar. I made a working there on the booth and we both had almost same interests due to that I was very surprised. There was also another booth next to us. I helped them to load, carry and organize their booth with food. This
Thus, the most influential reason I am striving to attend University of Michigan is the Health Sciences Scholars Program. This program includes classes that are specific to the health sciences, in comparison to classes at other universities that won’t satisfy my specific interests. The program provides a plethora of community service opportunities that allow students to actually make a difference in the community while also practicing skills needed in the field of health care. As a HSSP student I would be participating in professional observations, where I would be able to work with health care professionals while also being exposed to different careers. Many students aspiring to work in the health care field don’t have the opportunity to work with patients or doctors until they go to medical school, but I could accomplish this through HSSP during my freshman year. I can’t be a superhero without some prior experience after all. In comparison to other residential programs, such as Lyman Briggs at Michigan State, the Health Sciences Scholars Program at University of Michigan would provide me with the most opportunities to grow and pursue my passion for medicine and healing
Many schools need to push students to participate in volunteering services to receive their high school diploma. By students being part of an active role in the community, they are capable of becoming responsible leaders, learning new things, and helping those in need in their community. Volunteering is beneficial to students because it helps them become more mature and it helps them get ready for the real world. Students need to help the community whether it is forced or not.
The United States, as some can say, is a country known to be a hand in help. Although, they are a help by choice not mandatorly. In the United States there is a great amount of volunteers for many volunteering programs. The amount of volunteers increase through the years for different causes. There are volunteers for schools, churches, sport clubs, and even more. Not only do Americans volunteer but also make donations. Americans do this sincerely from heart, not because it's a law.
My past experiences in Asian Pacific Health Corps serving those in the San Gabriel Valley and Kids Come First Community Health Center serving those in the Inland Empire have inspired me to become a physician who is dedicated in making a difference amongst medically underserved populations. These experiences have exposed me to the unique health issues those in Southern California are facing and introduced me to the diverse population I want to ultimately serve. I am excited at the potential to further develop this passion at a medical school committed to service, as I have seen medical students from WesternU-COMP volunteering their time to perform osteopathic manipulative treatments at APHC’s health fairs. I look forward to volunteering as a student leader in organizations at WesternU-COMP, such as Pomona Homeless Outreach Program, and encouraging my classmates to get involved with community service projects to extend their learning beyond the classroom. WesternU-COMP’s innovative curriculum, early clinical experiences, supportive environment, and state-of-the-art facilities will prepare me to be a well-rounded leader in the ever-evolving field of medicine. With a reputation of graduating students matching into their residencies of choice, I can be assured that WesternU-COMP will help me to reach my career
I undertook 2 years of volunteering at the local nursing home, which allowed me to experience a new side of healthcare. Feeding and talking to elderly patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s highlighted the importance of empathy in the profession allowing the patients to trust you , along with learning the art of caring whilst working alongside and speaking to the carers. I am grateful to have the opportunity to experience the hidden and less glamorous parts where I witnessed the residents I worked with deteriorate over the time of a year, yet seeing her smile when she looked at me outweighed any pain that would have been caused. Knowing just talking and feeding the patients can make such a big difference in a patient’s life allows me to be
1. Looking back over the times you have volunteered at BIC , what did you find most surprising? Describe it in some detail. Why were you surprised?
Over Spring Break, I spent my week in Dallas, Texas with my youth group. I volunteered at an organization called The Cliffhouse, which resulted in a home being built in the "food desert" or Dallas. A young man, Kenny, was called by God to help the youth of Dallas. He is building a house (by himself!) in the most dangerous neighborhood of Dallas. If a child in being abused, possibly entering a gang, needs emotional assistance, etc, Kenny houses them in his home. I had the pleasure of helping him build this house. I also volunteered at Crossroads Community Services- this is a food packing warehouse that send meals to families in need. Many of my volunteer opprotunities are funded through my church, including my time at Newman Park Christian Center,
