Within their self-concept (the large collection of ideas people have about themselves,) everyone has very specific notions about what they think they should be; these notions are referred to as the ought self-concept (Verderber & MacGeorge, 2016). My ought self-concept has been primarily established by my parents as being a hard worker, standing up for what’s right, and always doing my best. Unfortunately, as you can imagine, there are days when I don’t work hard or feel like doing my best, so on these days there is a discrepancy between my actual self-concept and my ought self-concept.
According to a study published by the American Psychological Association in 2016, this discrepancy can take quite the toll on my mental state in the form of anxiety and depression (Watson, Bryan, & Thrash, 2016). A group of professors at the College of William and Mary found that scores on self-discrepancy assessments analyzing the difference between perceived actual and ought self-concepts correlate very strongly with scores on traditional anxiety

An hour later, I had been diagnosed with severe anxiety. According to Dr. Dunk, my brain was trying to control my anxious thoughts about school with cortisol (a hormone that suppresses your emotions,) which was causing a buildup of stomach acid. In short, I was so worried about maintaining my grades and reaching my ought self-concept that it had made me physically ill. Looking back, this diagnosis demonstrates just how important ought self-concept is to me, even if I don’t realize it. Having ideas about who you think you should be can be very motivating and working to achieve those ideals can be incredibly rewarding; however, placing incredible pressure on yourself to realize your goals can be physically
Throughout the group article exercise really did showcase who's personalities were strong and who's personalities were not. Having a strong personality means that you are willing to listen to other people's opinions but will debate on it by logical thinking of how you came across your answer rather than people with not so strong personalities meaning they agree with the group decisions. Through my personality, it will really show how I came across my conclusions, how the group came across their conclusions and how the group is influenced by the decisions made through the online assessments.
Going off of confidence, Jessica wants to be blatantly honest and holds that in the ideal self, but usually a respect for other people and thinking before acting comes into play before anything gets said. The other type of self is the ought self, which describes a characteristic that humans aspire to be based off their current position. Being a drummer, Jessica feels that it is crucial to be on time. Weather she is actually playing the drums or just showing up to events at the specified time, this characteristic is vital to keeping life in order and keeps the music from falling apart. According to the self-discrepancy theory, differences between the actual self and the ideal self will shift into awareness and this will impact how the world is viewed by experiencing different emotions. Different people are comfortable with different levels of discrepancy, making tipping points for emotions diverse. When a discrepancy reaches unbearable levels, discomfort is felt which could lead to cognitive dissonance if the ideal and actual self are contradictory to each
Carl Rogers view the self-concept as a collection of beliefs about one’s nature, unique qualities, and typical behaviour. Rogers believed that people are aware of their self-concepts. Our self-concept is our mental image of our self. It is a collection of our self-perceptions. For example, a self-concept might include such beliefs as the case example suggests, Dan expresses “I’m such a failure!” or “I just can’t cope with this!” Rogers used the term incongruence to introduce the disparity between one’s self-concept and one’s actual experience. On the contrary, congruence is an adequate match between the self-concept and reality. Our self-concept is not completely constant with our actual experiences. Forthrightly, our self-concept may be imprecise. Most people are likely to misinterpret their experience to a certain degree in order to develop a positive self-concept. For example, you believe that you are brave enough to do a skydive but when the actual time arrives you intend to surrender. Rodgers advocated that a great deal of incongruence can weaken an individual’s psychological well-being. On the other hand, if a person’s self-concept is fairly

REBT suggests that human beings defeat or ‘disturb’ themselves in two main ways: (1) by holding irrational beliefs about their ‘self’ (ego disturbance) or (2) by holding irrational beliefs about their emotional or physical comfort (discomfort disturbance). Frequently, the two go together – people may think irrationally about both their ‘selves’ and their circumstances – though one or the other will usually be predominant. Ego disturbance represents an upset to the self-image. It results from holding demands about one’s ‘self’, e.g. ‘I must … do well / not fail / get approval from others’; followed by negative selfevaluations such as: ‘When I fail / get disapproval / etc. this proves I am no good’ and so on. These beliefs create ‘ego anxiety’ – emotional tension resulting from the perception that one’s ‘self’ or personal worth is threatened – and lead to other problems such as avoidance of situations where failure, disapproval, etc. might occur; looking to other people for acceptance; and
Within the book, “The Students Calling”, Leland Ryken states that, “All education is ultimately self-education” (15). There are multiple ways we can decipher what he is saying. In the literal sense of what he is saying, I disagree completely because it is absolutely impossible to be self-educated your entire life. On the contrary, if we are to understand the figurative meaning behind what Leland is saying, then I would agree with him because everyone learns differently than each other. Before I can begin explaining why I agree or disagree with his statement, we first have to define what he means. Then after we define what Leland Ryken said, we can then begin to understand the figurative meaning of his statement and why all education is
According to Higgins people actually have three selves: actual, ideal and ought. The ideal self involves goals and aspirations and who or what they hope to become or achieve. The ought self involves more of the things the individual feels they must possess, it is more the minimum standard of who they feel they should be. The actual self is the self as it currently is. Self discrepancy theory describes the issues that arises when there is a gap between the actual and either the ideal or the ought self.
Since the beginning of mankind, the emotion of fear has repeatedly changed the course of human history. Fear, as described by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “is an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger” (M.W., 2014). While on the surface, fear appears to be something physiological, it also has the potential to create a host of problems within the body and its systems. Prolonged fear, otherwise known as stress, has been show to have dramatic negative effects on the body and under extreme conditions, promotes death. But how can one emotion do so much harm?
This part will discuss self-awareness and continuous self-development through analyzing a number of prior researches, then come up with the link of them to support my role as a manager in the future.
Self-Schemas Introduction Individuals are constantly trying to understand themselves, their environment and their place within it. Self-schemas serve an important role in this process by organizing past events and interactions. We then are able to makes sense of a given situation and develop an appropriate response based on our individually defined self-schemas. I will identify several self-schemas and discuss how they were formed and influenced by outside factors and I will assess whether my self-schema is functional or self-defeating in my adult life and how I would like it to be different.
The story of one high schooler displays the severity of anxiety, and how the intense pressures of school caused this. The student, Jake, suffered serious panic attacks, and bouts of depression where he couldn’t go to school for days, which only worsened his case, creating a vicious cycle that proved detrimental to his academics and mental health. His condition became so severe he even attempted suicide. All of this resulting from the demands of school (Denizet-Lewis). Jake is just one of many teenagers suffering from anxiety, in a study done by researchers at NYU, nearly half of high school students questioned report suffering depression or stress as a result of school. In another study about undergraduate college students 62% are reported to have anxiety, this percent has jumped from 50% in 2011 (James). This is a growing epidemic and it must be stopped, the effects of anxiety are destructive to a teenager’s health, and in many cases such as Jake’s, kids require several medications to function normally day-to-day.
objectives. An obstacle is that I do not have time and do not really know how to work on it and improve it. What supports the process of change is that I am motivated to work on my patience because I know that it is important to not look unprofessional. Nevertheless I could develop good problem-solving skills from several difficult situations. In eight year of customer service I have faced nearly every day a new problem and I became really good in fixing them. I lead a team with approx. 45 employees from different nations in Miami which was not easy for me because of the different cultures and behaviors and I was by far not perfect in that. It was a German company, in Miami with a French boss and most of the employees were Hispanic. Sometimes it was
lf-concept refers to the mental image or idea that an individual holds regarding themselves. An individuals’ self-concept continually develops in each of the life stages and is seen to be closely related to the social as well as the emotional development. As such, a person views themselves differently depending on the environment in which they are.
Motivation is a very strong tool we can use to get further in life and to achieve our dreams and goals. Setting goals for ourselves is something that I consider to be very important, I believe in always pushing myself further and further in life, not only physically but mentally as well. We all have different things or tools we can use to motivate us towards our end goals. In order for us to stay motivated we have to have a goal and be driven towards achieving that goal.
Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread. My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.
