Within the book, “The Students Calling”, Leland Ryken states that, “All education is ultimately self-education” (15). There are multiple ways we can decipher what he is saying. In the literal sense of what he is saying, I disagree completely because it is absolutely impossible to be self-educated your entire life. On the contrary, if we are to understand the figurative meaning behind what Leland is saying, then I would agree with him because everyone learns differently than each other. Before I can begin explaining why I agree or disagree with his statement, we first have to define what he means. Actually, no. According to the article Studying Learning in the Womb, “A relatively new body of data indicates that the learning begins before birth” (302). They were able to test this by having a group of babies breast feed and based upon two different sucking patterns the babies would hear either a recording of their mother’s voice or a recording of a random woman’s voice. Because these babies were comforted by their mother’s voice the newborn babies would prefer to suck the nipple in the way to hear their mother’s voice much more often than the other. This shows that before we are even born we are subconsciously taking in information and learning from our environment and the people around us. And while in the womb, babies mainly learn from their mother’s voice and what she consumes but even things such as stress, environmental factors such as extreme cold or heat, and other circumstances affect children in the womb.
If we interpret what Leland said literally then it is proved to be untrue. If humans, while they are still in the womb before they even have free will to choose to learn, are learning, then truly not all education is self-education. It is impossible for someone to go their entire life without interacting with another human because before we are born we are interacting with our mother and her environment.
For example, in the most extreme case a human could choose to make their own choices their entire life and have a completely self-educated life
The film Higher Learning is a call to action. It is a film that shows people as products of their environment. The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between the races and sexes. Richard Rodriguez writes in his essay, “The Lonely, Good Company of Books,” how he once struggled with the concept of being “educated” while studying in school (191). It is true that society has developed the idea that to be educated means to be successful in life, but is this really true? Education is certainly a contributing factor to one’s future, however, what exactly does it mean to be “educated” in today’s world? Although the times have changed and the world has become more modernized, learning has remained as important, if not more so, as it had when it was first discovered that it was essential to function in an advanced society. Being educated means that they know the basic knowledge, are able to apply those skills to different situations, and use them to comprehend and give back to the community.
The misconception that occurs between education and knowledge isn’t rare. Many say that knowledge is knowing many things, but education is understanding many things. Nevertheless, it should be seen as the complete development of one's personality, intellectual development, and moral evolution. The system tells everyone to learn the same material, even if the students are bored and even if they’re sleeping during class. In the article “Against School”, John Taylor Gatto states, “teachers didn’t seem to know much about their subject and clearly weren’t interested in learning” (Gatto). This shows the teachers and the students disconnect from the context because either it’s irrelevant or not being taught in inspiring ways. A lot of people think education is just something you get in school, but in reality education comes from different places and people not just school and teachers. For example, way before I started school I was already being educated by my parents, they taught me how to eat, behave, use the bathroom, talk, and a lot of other things that help out in life.

My intellectual self is interesting because I am mainly right-brained which means that I tend to use my creativity more than my mathematical skills, also making me a visual learner. My passion is to not only teach students in a creative and positive way that they are actually learning but also to inspire them to learn and make something great of themselves in their future. The reason being when I was younger I did not take my education that serious. If I would have known then how serious an education was, I feel that I could have accomplished more in middle and high school. After school I wouldn't care about actually learning about my homework. For this reason I want to inspire kids to want to learn at a young age and for them to see that their education and work ethic is very important even at their age.
