Odyssey Comparison

There is a big difference between reading Dr.Seuss books and reading the Odyssey. Although some may argue there more similar than you may think. Authors slide in suddle writing techniques and themes to portray the moral or message they are trying to convey. In any books you can find a similar theme or writing technique even if the level of writing or the story are completely different. This semester we have looked at many pieces of writing including Okay, Letter from Birmingham Jail, Antigone Now, Civil, Disobedience, and The Ones Who Walk Away. We analysed all of this pieces looking for themes addressing responsibility. We found that even though each is quite different the authors use very similar writing techniques. The parents are responsible for the kids and the kids are told to look at for their siblings. Every family functions different and looks different but in the end they all share a sense of responsibility for each family member. Family and responsibility is something everyone can relate to. Family is a basic need that is programmed inside of us and we all understand the significance of it. Using characters in a family immediately connects with the reader and helps them understand the relationship between the characters. Even when a family member does a bad thing the relationship is still there and there is a sense of responsibility for them no matter what they have done. In Antigone Now this is shown when her brother kills her other brother. Although one brother did something wrong he is still family. This quote from the text demonstrates how the author used family to adress responsibility. “Creon:... And you, what do you do? You break the law. And for what? To bury a murderer-Antigone: Polyneices was my brother. I loved him, and I buried him”(Cooper 25). Antigone was still responsible for her brother even though he did something awful. The author used family to show that people are responsible for their loved ones. This technique is also used in Okay, the Dad shows responsibility by not disappointing his family. He lets the man in to the car because his kids would be upset if he didn’t. We do anything for family which is why the literary technique of using a family as characters shows
