An empowered individual whom you may meet only for a 12-hour period, but who will put you and yours above theirs”-Anonymous. For the past year and a half, I have volunteered at Blaire E. Batson Children’s Hospital. It has been an amazing experience! My passion for the medical field and career of nursing has been magnified. I know without a doubt that nursing is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I long for the opportunity to care for my future patients and their families. I want to touch other people’s lives just as I have witnessed nurses do throughout my time volunteering. God has given me a passion for nursing. With my passion and compassion for others, I know I will be successful if admitted into the BSN program.

My career commitment as a nurse has grown tremendously over the past three years; through my daily experiences as a Medical Assistant. I have devoted my time as a full time student and employee of the health care profession. Both of these occupations have helped shape me into the person I want to be for as long as time allows. Daily I witness these community role models that posses abilities such as problem solving skills, promotion and protection of an individual’s advocacy all tied in with compassion to meet the health care needs of an individual.

I have worked in every area of the hospital and nursing homes in my nineteen years of clinical practice as a nurse. I have excelled and enjoyed the care that I have provided over the years. I have been a charge nurse wherever I have worked and enjoyed brainstorming and critically thinking through what needed to be done for a patient when they were not doing well. I have prevented many code blues and have been a preceptor to many excellent nurses.

I have wanted to be a nurse since I got sick in 5th grade. I had lost kidney function, I was dehydrated, and had lost 25-30lbs in one weekend. I had to be hospitalized for a week and a half. And the nurses helped me through more than I could have ever expected. They helped me with emotional issues, feminine issues, personal issues, and so much more than they should have ever expected. And between the ages of 9 to 15 I was in and out of the hospital and the only people I can remember who helped me the most was the nurses. All nurses have at least one thing in common—they want to help people. Not only do they play the role of caretaker for their patients, but in some circumstances, they can also be a friend, a confidante and a trusted adviser. Being a nurse not only means compassion, dedication, and intelligence, but the profession also requires endurance, personal sacrifice, and the need for continuous education. I have learned that nurses are some of the most caring and selfless people that anyone will ever meet. Nurses are more than willing to complete challenging tasks and care for others in a way that the majority of people are unwilling to. I am driven to bring all of these qualities into my role as a future nurse practitioner, which is why I am committed to pursuing my Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP).

It is said that the environment of our upbringing plays a salient role in determining the ambitions we pursue, the moral values we cherish and ultimately, the lasting contributions we make to society. I firmly believe that my formative experiences laid down the foundation for passion for nursing and constitute one of the salient reasons why I am determined to pursue this profession. For me nursing, is more than a mere vocation, it is a moral commitment, the manifestation of my natural talents and the actualization of the deep-seated aspirations that I have nourished since childhood. My mother was an accomplished nurse and always set a remarkable example for me to follow by displaying virtues of compassion, moral courage and dedication to the public good. My life experiences compelled me to emulate her example by cultivating the virtues of compassion and genuine sensitivity to patients. My formative experiences and core values led me to enter this career in the capacity of a Certified Nursing Assistant where I was distinguished for not only my competence as a nurse assistant, but also for my remarkable sensitivity to the needs of the patients. I intend to continue to actualize my natural talents by pursuing a career in Nursing.

My encounter with nurses and certified nursing assistance at a long-term care facility was one that I learned a lot from. The experience and training were great. I got to be in a setting of well-trained healthcare workers, all trying to help the sick or be there for those who couldn’t help themselves, in a sense. Having been a certified nursing assistant for just about six years I have had many experiences and come into contact with countless people who have touched my life and inspired me to become greater; to become a nurse. Co-workers, patients, patient family members and my own friends and family have always told me to pursue a career as a registered nurse. A very special co-worker of mine, Kathy a registered nurse, inspired me every day I came into work. She always had a smile on her face, she was always the first nurse to rush to help, she would listen to the patients and take the time to talk to them, and she treated every patient that came on our unit with care. Growing up I did not dream about becoming a nurse. I graduated from high school with honors and was planning to go to law school. However, several months later, my life drastically changed. Unexpectedly, my beloved mother was diagnosed with stage II ovarian cancer. Spending countless days and nights by her side at the hospital made me recognize how significant and life-saving her care was. Nurses were highly skilled professionals who worked together to provide essential care for my mother, give immense support and encouragement, ensure that her treatment would be delivered timely, promptly assess and address her physical and emotional needs and manage her distressing symptoms.

Working with the nurse who cared for my ailing grand-aunt, was a life changing experience. I would assist with bathing, grooming and toileting as well as reading to my aunt a couple of her favorite mystery novels. Evening though my grand-aunt 's condition was irreversible, I felt at peace because her nurse made sure she was comfortable and her needs were met. The compassion, empathy, work ethics and support the nurse provided for my family and grand-aunt during this difficult time resonated with me, the nurse inspired me in so many ways and even encouraged me to pursue a profession in nursing.

Many of whom were lacking in both the knowledge and at times grace to work with a women in my mother’s state. As a result of this and my willingness to learn and love I have lately found myself stepping up to care for her. I have experienced the early mornings and late nights associated with caring for and maintaining an IV line as well as the handfuls of medications to be delivered at certain times throughout the day. This experience I have come to realize is part of what made me truly fall head over hills with nursing. In addition to the endeavors with my mother I was able to obtain and keep a job at my local elderly care center. It was my three years there that helped me to both learn and love to care for people in a professional setting. The work I accomplished with my coworkers and supervisors during my time there also turned out to be not only helpful when providing care but in my everyday life as well. They helped me to understand that everyone has different personalities and beliefs and that when they are combined something magical just might happen. Ever since I was a little girl I had imagined myself working in the medical field. However, back then I did not have any personal drive towards this type of career path. In 2014, that all changed. On March 27, 2014, I was diagnosed with Lymphoma. After five months of rigorous chemotherapy, falling behind in classes, and struggling to keep myself mentally stable, I was finally cancer-free. Those five months proved to be the most brutal, but also the most memorable. Having to be in the hospital for long periods of time had a great influence on the way I thought about nurses, and the work they do to ensure their patients’ needs were being met. This is how I found myself drawn towards a career in nursing. My personal fundamental values as an individual are kindheartedness, sincerity, family, and continuous learning. I plan on integrating these personal core values with what I believe to be the core values of nursing which are compassion, knowledge, and honesty. Patients who are shown compassion by nurses are seen to be much more relaxed in times of sickness and pain. Knowledge is important because improving knowledge is an essential to avoid mistakes and errors, delivering higher quality care for patients. Lastly, it is extremely important to comprehend the necessity of maintaining honesty and integrity in one’s practice so that the patient’s sense of self is not compromised. Caring for others has always been a passion of mine, and becoming a nurse has always been my dream. While my dream has turned reality, I can say that nursing has blessed me with the opportunity to not only be a servant to those in my community, but it has also allowed me to be of some comfort to patients and their loved ones during their darkest and most vulnerable moments. Nursing offers a variety of opportunities, where the only restrictions are the ones we set for ourselves. As for myself, all things are possible, for if I want it, I strongly believe it’s already mine. The depths that I will go to reach the latitude of success that I so desire is boundless.

The field of nursing has provided so many opportunities for me. It has given me a challenging career with limitless possibilities and sense of purpose professionally.
